  • This invention relates generally to door knobs and an important object thereof is to provide an elastic shock absorber or cushioning device for knobs now in general use, as well as a knob 5 formed from elastic material such as rubber, to prevent defacing or damage to the plaster or paneling of the wall, disposed in the path of the knob. Therefore it will be obvious that by the use of my cushioning device, door stops now generally employed can be obviated and the disadvantageous features thereof eliminated.
  • Afurther object is to provide shock absorbers or cushioning devices, for the purpose set forth thatcan be readily applied, are simple in conl5 struction, inexpensive to manufacture in any color, to harmonize with the color of the door, its fixtures or the general color scheme of the room and are extremely efllcient in use and service.

I (Cl. 292-347) This invention relates generally to door knobs and an important object thereof is to provide an elastic shock absorber or cushioning device for knobs now in general use, as well as a knob 5 formed from elastic material such as rubber, to prevent defacing or damage to the plaster or paneling of the wall, disposed in the path of the knob. Therefore it will be obvious that by the use of my cushioning device, door stops now generally employed can be obviated and the disadvantageous features thereof eliminated.
Afurther object is to provide shock absorbers or cushioning devices, for the purpose set forth thatcan be readily applied, are simple in conl5 struction, inexpensive to manufacture in any color, to harmonize with the color of the door, its fixtures or the general color scheme of the room and are extremely efllcient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing where- .in like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the cover form of my cushioning device for door knobs now in general use, and illustrates the same applied to a' knob, as well as an escutcheon plate which may be made of the same material and color as the 5 cushioning device to harmonize therewith.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1,1ooking in the direction of the arrows, and illustrates a bumper plate applied to'the wall and which is likewise 40 made from cushioning material of a color to harmonize with the cushioning device and the escutcheon plate.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through a modified form, in which the entire knob structure with theexception of the attaching-sleeve is made from cushioning material.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, and particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral I indicates adoor knob of a well known type, and
2 the socketed shank thereof which is secured to the spindle 3 in the usual manner. The cushioning device for the knob as best shown in Figure 2 a portion 6 that is in the form of a cover therefor and is made from elastic material such as rubber to provide a hollow body portion 4 with a sleeve portion 5 extending therefrom for disposal about the shank 2, while the body portion is disposed about the 6 body of the knob, it being obvious that the cover is of a size to be stretched about the knob body and shank to snugly'fit the same in the manner as shown.
The hollow body portion is shaped to provide 10 extends outwardly beyond the outer face of the knob to provide an air chamber 1, and the outer face of the hollow body portion is preferably of fiat disk shaped formation as at 8, with a plurality of openings 9 therein, so that Ill -the outwardly extending portion 6 provides 'an the door, and the plate I I may likewise be formed or made from elastic material, and of the same color as the plate Ill and the door knob cover so that they will harmonize with each other. The 30 plate l0 can also be'used as a cover plate for switch boxes and the like of electric fixtures and 1 in that event it is provided with openings for the passage of the operating means for the switches.
In Figures 3 and 4 I have illustrated the cush- 35 ioning device in the form of a door knob, in that the body I2 is substantially solid, and the solid portion is shown as being shaped somewhat similar to the body of the door knob of Figure 2.
Formed with and extending from the solid por- 40 tion is a hollow sleeve I3 and mounted therein is a metallic sleeve I 4 which cooperates with the hollow sleeve to provide the shank of the knob, the metallic sleeve having a right angle cornered bore therein to receive the spindle i5 and held accordingly thereon in the usual manner by a set screw I6 that passes through the sleeves II and M. The sleeve I4 has formed therewith a flange l1 engageable with the outer edge of the sleeve ii.
The form as shown in Figures 3 and 4 includes a hollow portion. l8 providing an air chamber IS, the hollow portion extending outwardly beyond the solid portionand terminating ina flat disk 5 shaped Iace 20 having openings 2| therein to provide air passages, as will be apparent.
The cushioning devices including the cover type for the knob, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the solid type as shown plate III, as well as the escutcheon plate can be formed from any kind of cushioning material, such as rubber, or compositions suitable for the purpose, and they are made in any color, so as to harmonize with the color oi. the door, its fixtures and the general color scheme oi! the room or the like, within while the plates Ill and ii are shown as having beveled outer edges and are rectangular in form, it will of course be understood that they can be made in any shape and have any suitable decorations thereon.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

A cushioning device for doors comprising an elastic body shaped to provide a knob for a door and including a. solid portion and a hollow portion, the latter providing an air chamber, said hollow portion having openings in the face thereof communicating with the chamber, a sleeve formed on the solid portion, means within the sleeve for fitting the spindle oi the latch of the door, and means for securing the first means to the spindle and extending through the sleeve.
2. A door knob comprising an elastic body including a solid portion, a hollow portion extending outwardly from the solid portion and providing an air chamber, said hollow portion having a flat face provided with openings therein communicating with the chambenan elastic sleeve formed on the solid portion and extending therefrom, a metallic sleeve within the elastic sleeve and having a bore shaped to fit the spindle of a door latch, and said sleeves having an opening therein to receive means for securing the knob to the spindle.
