This invention relates to a creeper or nonslip attachment for shoes particularly adapted to be worn when walking on ice although obviously capable of use where secure traction is desirable. v
It is particularly aimed to provide a novel construction which is adjustable as hereinafter pointed out, to conform to shoes of different sizes, and still enable maximum flexure of the shoe as during normal use of the shoe, the device being adjustable both longitudinally and laterally, and being adapted to extend only from the forward edge of the heel portion to the ball of the foot portion.
It is further aimed to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive construction having novel means permitting attachment of the device to the shoe with minimum effort.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:

Figure 4 is a cross sectional view through the attachment taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a cross view of the attachment taken through the forward portion, and
Figure 6 is a detail view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the device primarily consists of a forward section IQ, and a rearward section Il, connected together for longitudinal adjustment, by means of overlapping shanks I2 and I3, the former having depending iianges at I4 for guidance during adjustment as well as security against relative lateral movement, and the shank I3 having an elongated slot I5, accommodating a bolt I6 passed through an opening in the shank I 2. Tightening of the nut Il of the bolt securely fastens the sections in the desired adjusted position. The said forward section I0 is widened in advance of the shank I2 and the corners are struck downwardly at right angles to provide anti-slipping spurs I8, while the sides have curled portions or barrels I9 in which the lowermost link of side chains 20 are journaled. The side chains 20 consist of any desired number of links 2I all pivotally connected together in an obvious manner, and permitting in effect variation in the width of the forward portion of the section I0, to adapt the device to different widths of shoes.
The rearmost section II has a plate 22 which nts under the sole of the shoe journally designated 23, and against the breast of the heel Z4 of that shoe, the end of the plate 22 extending downwardly and constituting anti-slipping spurs 25 which may be rectangular as shown, pointed or of any other desired shape.
A reinforcing bar 26 is disposed beneath the shank I3 and in abutment with the forward edges of the spurs 25 and riveted or bolted as at El to the shank I3. Such rivet 2l also passes through a securing strap 28 disposed between the shank I3 and bar 26, which strap may be used to secure the attachment in place on the shoe, it being of leather, textile fabric or the like, and being discontinuous in that it has a buckle 29 to secure the ends thereof together. This fastening strip or strap 28 it will be noted passes over the instep, around the ankle, back over the instep, through one of the links 2I at one side of the device, past the sole, then directly over the foot to the uppermost link at the other side of the device after which the ends are buckled together at 29. The buckle is arranged on the outside so that in case of a surplusage of the strap, there will be no undue wear on the latter.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the device extends only from the ball of the foot to the breast of the heel and that it is adjustable to different sizes of shoes and affords maximum flexing of the latter.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
l claim as my invention:
l. A device of the class described having a plate provided with depending spurs, a shank extending forwardly from the plate, a bar beneath the plate and engaging said spurs, a fastening passing through the shank and bar, and a securing strap held in place between said shank and bar.
2. A device of the class described having a plate provided with depending spurs, a shank extending forwardly from the plate, a bar beneath the plate and engaging said spurs, a fastening passing through the shank and bar, a securing strap held in place between said shank and bar, a shank adjustably connected to the first mentioned shank, one of said shanks having flanges overlapping the sides of the other shank, a plate carried by the second mentioned shank, anti-slipping means carried by the second mentioned plate, chains at the sides of the second mentioned plate, and said securing means passing through links of said chains.
