nomical form of clip construction involving an relatively rigid clip body forming one part of the device and a spring part forming means for coupling the first named part to its support and for tensionally holding the iirst named part in operative position upon the support; a further object being to provide a spring part having at one end thereof a T-shaped cross-head forming the coupling means for said clip part, said spring part being recessed adjacent the cross-head facilitating attachment of the clip part therewith to provide a simple and yet strong and durable coupling between said parts; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specied, which is simple in construction, eilicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a side and sectional view of a part of a fountain pen showing one of my improved clip devices arranged thereon.

Fig. 2 is a face view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 with part of the construction broken away and in section.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the clip device detached.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring part of the device which I employ, detached.

Fig. 5 is a partial section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; and,

Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 on an enlarged scale, and showing a modication.

To illustrate one method of carrying my invention into eiect, I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing at I0, the cap of a fountain pen having a removable plug or head I I at one end thereof for supporting one of my improved clips I2 in connection with the cap. In the construction shown, the plug I I has a reduced threaded portion I3 engaging a correspondingly threaded bore of the cap I0; this construction forming a shoulder I4 for engaging .the ring end I5 of a spring part I6 of the clip. This part has a spring arm I1 depending from one peripheral edge of the ring Il, note Fig. 4, and the arm terminates at its free end in a cross-head or coupling portion I8 which forms projecting flanges I9 and 20 at each side of the arm which extend outwardly beyond the side edges \2I of said arm.

One of the edges 2I adjacent the head I8 has a deep recess 22 which as shown is disposed adjacent the ange 20, to provide means for coupling the part I6 with the clip part proper 23. 'Ihe part 23 consists of an elongated member of channel cross-sectional form; that is to say, the member is provided with a top wall 24 and depending side walls 25 which project at the upper end of the clip to form rounded pivot or bearing ends 26 and project at the other free end of the clip to register with an inturned bearing part 21, similar to the conventional ball end usually provided in devices of this kind; .this structure facilitating free insertion and removal of a pocket wall or other support between the part 21 and the cap IU.

The upper end of the clip is also provided with a downwardly turned top wal128 which closes and conceals the top of the clip so as to render the spring part I6 substantially invisible as will be apparent.

29, 29a, at a point slightly nearer the end of the clip provided with the projection 21, in which apertures, the projecting anges I9, 20, respectively, are adapted to be placed in coupling the parts I6 and 23. It will be noted that the outer ends of the iianges I9 andl 20 rest in a plane flush with the outer surfaces of the side walls 25 as will appear upon a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing.

In the operation of coupling the parts I6 and 23, the spring arm I1 is flexed in the manner indicated partially in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawing; and the member 20 is first passed through the aperture 29a, the recess 22 clearing the adjacent side wall 25 of the clip in this operation. Then the flange I9 is placed in the aperture 29 by moving the cross-head I8 transversely as will be apparent: When the flange I9 is in position, the entire arm I1 is free to pass into the channel of the clip 23 and is made to t snugly therein; that is to say; the side edges 2| will lit snugly within the walls 25 so as to support the clip 23 against any possible movement with respect to the arm. If desired this assemblage may be accomplished under pressure to insure ilrm engagement of the parts.

In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown a modication which simply consists in beading the side walls 25a.of the clip as seen at 30, 30a,

to form recesses 3|, lla, in which the projecting flanges .I9 and 20 may be passed. H. iwever, with this construction, the cross-head I8 will be exed transversely by suitable tools in making the assemblage, the recess 22 in this connection permitting the flexure of the cross-head, and especially in the long ange 20 thereof. This method of assemblage may yalso be used in connection with the structure shown in the other figures as will be apparent.

It will appear that the part 23 constitutes the clip body proper and by virtue of its channel construction, this clip forms a hood which conceals the exposed portion of the part I 6, and especially the arm l1 thereof, with the exception of where the ends IB, 20, are exposed through the body as in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. Fig. 6, the arm is completely concealed.

It will also appear that by virtue of the snug mounting of the arm Il within the channel of the body 23, the two parts become as one with no relative movement with respect to each other. The spring arm normally supports the rounded projection 21 in tensional engagement with the surface of the cap I0.

Having fully described my invention, what I` claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In clips of the class described, a spring part for coupling a clip body in connection with a suitable support, said part comprising an elongated spring arm, means at one end ofthe arm l for attaching the same to a support, the other end of .the arm having laterally projecting coupling anges, and said arm adjacent one of said iianges being recessed to facilitate attachment of a clip body with the flanges of said arm.

2. A clip` for mounting writing implements in connection with suitable supports, said clip comprising an elongated clip body of channel crosssectional form to provide an outer wall and depending side walls on said body substantially throughout the length thereof, means forming a rounded knob or head at one end of said body, the side walls of said body having recesses substantially centrally of said body, a spring arm arranged in the channel of said body, said arm having projecting members located in the recesses in the side walls of said body to retain said body against longitudinal movement on said arm, and means on said arm for securing the clip to a writing implement in such manner as to support the knob end of said body in tensional engagement with the outer surface of said implement.

3. A clip for mounting writing implements in connection with suitable supports, said clip comprising an elongated clip body of channel crosssectional form to provide an outer wall and depending side walls on said body substantially throughout the length thereof, means forming a rounded knob or head at one end of said body, the side walls of said body having recesses substantially centrally of said body, a spring arm arranged in the channel of said body, said arm having projecting members located in the recesses in the side walls of said body to retain said body against longitudinal movement on said arm, means on said arm for securing the clip to a writing implement in such manner as to support the knob end of said bodyin tensional engagement with the outer surface of said implement, and said spring arm fitting snugly in and arranged longitudinally of the channel of However, in l said body to retain the body against lateral movement on said arm.

4. A clip for mounting writing implements in connection with suitable supports, said clip comprising an elongated clip body of channel cross- 5 sectional form to provide an outer wall and depending side walls on said body ,substantially throughout the length' thereof, means forming a rounded knob or head at one end of said body,

the side walls of said body having recesses subl0 stantially centrally of said body, a spring arm arranged in the channel of said body, said arm having projecting members located in the recesses in the side walls of said body to retain said body against longitudinal movement on said 15 arm, means on said arm for securing the clip to a writing implement in such manner as to sup-v port the knob end of said body in tensional engagement with the outer surface of said implement, said spring arm fitting snugly in' and 20 arranged longitudinally of the channel of said body to retain the body against lateral movement on said arm, and said arm being recessed adjacent one of said projecting members to facilitate the coupling of said arm with said clip l body.

A clip of the class described comprising a nspring part and a clip body detachably coupled therewith, said spring part comprising an elon'- gated arm, means on one end of the arm for v mounting the same in connection with a support for securing the clip against displacement from the support, said clip being of channel cross-sectional form throughout the length thereof to provide spaced side walls, said body being ar- 3,5lv

ranged longitudinally of and covering said arm, laterally projecting means on the other end portion of said arm, and the side walls of said channel having recesses receiving said projecting means for coupling said body to the arm to retain the same against displacement therefrom.

6. A clip .of the class described comprising a spring part and a clip body detachably coupled therewith, said spring part comprising an elongated arm, means on one end.of the arm for mounting the same in connection with a support for securing the clip against displacement from the support, said clip being of channel crosssectional form throughout the length thereof to provide spaced side Walls, said body being arranged longitudinally of and covering said arm, laterally projecting means on the other end portion of said arm, the side walls of said channel4 having recesses receiving said projecting means for coupling said body to the arm to retain the same against displacement therefrom, and the side edges of said arm fitting snugly within the side walls of said channel to retain the body against lateral movement on said arm.

7. A clip of the class described comprising a spring part and a clip body detachably coupled therewith, said spring part comprising an elongated arm, means on one end of the arm for mounting the same in connection with a support for securing the clip against displacement from the support, said clip being of channel cross-sectional form throughout the length there- -of to provide spaced side walls, said body being arranged longitudinally of and covering said arm, laterally projesting means on the other end the side edges 'of said arm fitting snugly within 75 port and for securing the clip against displacethe side walls of said channel to retain the body against lateral movement on said arm, the free end of said clip having a rounded knob normally held in` engagement with the surface of the support in connection with which the clip is mounted -by said spring part, and the other end of said body having rounded projections engaging the surface of the support to form a pivot upon which said body is free to swing outwardly with respect to the support.

8. A clip of the class described comprising a spring part and a clip bodyl detachably coupled therewith, said spring part comprising an elongated arm, means on one end oi the arm for mounting the same in connection with a support for securing theI clip against displacement from the support, said clip being of channel crosssectional form throughout the length thereof to provide spaced side walls, said body being arranged longitudinally of and covering said arm, laterally projecting means on the other end portion of said arm, the side walls of said channel having recesses receiving said projecting means for coupling said body to the arm to retain the same against displacement therefrom, and the said side walls at the upper end of the clip body having rounded projections engaging the surface of the support whereby said body is free to swing outwardly with respect to said support.

9. A clip of the class described comprising a spring part and a clip body detachably coupled therewith, said spring part comprising an elongated arm, means at one end of the arm for mounting the same in connection with a supment therefrom, said clip body being of channel cross-sectional form throughout its length to provide spaced side walls and having recesses in said side walls' intermediate the ends thereof, said body being arranged longitudinally of and covering said arm, the other end of said arm having side projections forming a T-shaped head, said projections being of equal transverse length with respect to said arm, the sides of said arm throughout its length closely engaging the side walls of said body preventing lateral movement thereof, and the side projections of said T-shaped head being located in the recesses in the side walls of said body preventing longitudinal movement thereof.

10. In clips of the class described a spring part for coupling a clip body in connection with a suitable support, said body having depending side walls and apertures in said walls intermediate the ends of said body, said part comprising an elongated spring arm, means at one end of the arm for attaching the same to a support, the other end of the arm having side projections forming a T-shaped head, said side projections being of equal transverse length with respect to the arm, one side of the arm adjacent said head having a recess therein slightly deeper than the length of one of said projections and of a length greater than the depth of one side wall of said body adjacent the aperture therein whereby the projections on the T-shaped head may be coupled with the apertures by the iixure and lateral movement of said arm.
