IMPROVEMENT IN RIBBON-RETAINERS FOR UMBRELLA-HANDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,022, dated March 4, 187 9 application filed January 9, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH WRIGHT, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ribbon-Retainers for Parasol-Handles, &c., of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to retain a bow of ribbon on the handle of a parasol or umbrella; and this object I obtain by thedevice which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of partof the stick of a parasol or umbrella with the bow-retainer; Fig. 2, an enlargedperspective view of the retaining device detached from the stick, and Figs. 3 and A views of modifications of the invention.

The retainer consists of two rings or ferrules, a a, (preferably of metal,) connected together and maintained at the desired distance apart by the wire I), the latter being bent at'the ends where it is united to the rings, so that there may be a space between the wire and stick for admitting the ribbon of which the bow B is composed.

One or both of the rings may be connected to the stick by a small pin or screw, (1.

The ribbon, before it is converted into a bow, may be passed between the wires and the stick, wrapped round the latter, and finally knotted at f, after which the ribbon may be converted into a bow by tying the ends together, as

shown in Fig. 1.

The bow will always be retained in its proper position on the stick by the ferrules, and the loosening of the knot will be prevented by the wire b, which, with the ferrules, will form, when polished or plated, a neat finish.

Two wires, 11 b, may be used instead of a single wire, as shown in Fig. 3, and the rings a a may be formed by bending a narrow strip of sheet metal into the proper shape and securing together the overlapping ends, as also showri in said figure.

When the stick is tapered the rings a a may also be tapered for adaptation thereto, as shown 'in Fig. 4.

I claim as my invention- The within-described retaining device, consisting of the two rings a a, adapted to the stick of an umbrella or parasol, and a wire or wires, 1), by which the rings are connected together, all as set forth.
