i izem au, I H I TATE s UNITED PATENT HORATIO B. MORRISON, OF MASON CITY, IOWA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,968, dated March 4, 1879; application filed October 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO B. MORRI- SON, of Mason City, in the county of Oerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Stove- Pipe Safe and Register; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan View. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the upper head-plate detached. Fig. 4 is a top view, in perspective, of the lower head-plate; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved register in position upon a stove-pipe, showing the devices for operating the same.
This invention relates to an improved stovepipe safe and register; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A represents the head-plate of my improved register. It is provided with an annular groove, a, forming a bearing for a horizontally-sliding plate, B, provided with openings (1, which may be made to correspond with similar openings, 1), in plate A; or the openings D may be closed by the solid portions 1) of plate B by shifting the position of the latter.
The plate Ama-y be provided with hooks F, for retaining the plate B in position. These, however, are only necessary when it is desired to adjust the register in the partitionwall between two rooms.
The plate B is provided with a handle, B, by which it may be operated, and upon its under side it has a stud, G, to which are attached two cords,'H H, passing over pulleys I I, working in bearings J J, cast upon the under side of plate A. By these cords, which depend through the bottom plate of the register, and are provided with acorns K K for handles, the sliding plate may be operated from below in case the register is adjusted in the ceiling of a room and opening into the room above.
The plate A is secured, in any suitable manner, to the top of the shell or ring L,
which may be made of sheet metal or other vided for this purpose in both the top and the bottom plates.
The solid parts '0 of the bottom-plate, M, are beveled downwardly toward their edges, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the object of this being to prevent the accumulation of dust, which otherwise is apt to interfere seriously with the operation of the device.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with lhc drawings hereto annexed.
The device may be adjusted upon a stovepipe in the ceiling or partition-wall of a room opening into the room above or next by, and controls perfectly the admission of heat from one room into the other, and answers at the same time the purpose of a ventilator. The air-spaceR prevents overheating, and consequent damage to the wood-work in which the device may be placed, and sufficient dust can never accumulate to interfere with the operation of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a stove-pipe safe and register, the combination, with the head-plate A and sliding plate B, of the dust-preventing plate M, arranged below, the solid parts o of said plate lVI being beveled or sloped downwardly toward their edges, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO'B. MORRISON.
