IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS AND PIPE-HOLE PLATES FOR TENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,054. dated October 28, 1873; application filed September 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT BRIEN and WILLIAM BRIEN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Ventilator and StovePipe-Hole Plate for Tents, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of a metal plate having a hole for ventilation, or for the projection of a stove-pipe fastened in a large hole in the tentcloth or in a piece of cloth to be fastened in the hole in the tentcloth, and provided with a valve for closing the ventilator or pipe-hole, the valve being provided with springs for closing it, and a cord and pulley for opening it, the plate being to support the valve and the stove-pipe, and to protect the cloth from the heat of the pipe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a lent with the ventilator and pipe-hole plate attached to it, and Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line at as.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the tent-cloth, or a small piece to be sewed into the tent-cloth. A large hole is cut out of this piece of cloth, and closed by a metal plate, B, fitted and fastened to the margin of the cloth, and riveted to it, also to a washer, G, which is placed on the opposite side of the cloth to that on which the plate is placed. This plate has a hole, D, which may be for ventilation or for a stove-pipe, E, and over it is a valve, F, with springs G for 010s ing it, and a cord, H, for opening it. The cord cord, being arranged in complete order, may
be made and sold independently of the tent for those having tents already constructed, who can readily put in the attachment.
If it is desired to have a larger hole for ventilation than is needed for the stove-pipe hole another sliding plate with a pipe-hole may be arranged on the principal plate, having a. large ventilating-hole, so as to slide over the latter, when ventilation is not wanted, to hold the pipe, and slide back out of the way when the larger passage for ventilation is wanted. This plate will be on one side of the principal plate and the valve on the other side, so that it will not interfere with the other.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The ventilator or pipe-hole plate B, valve F, springs G, and cord H, combined and attached to a tent-cloth, or to a piece of cloth to be sewed to the tent-cloth, substantially as specified.
