WRITING PAD Filed Aug. 20, 1937 Patented Sept. 6, 1938 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRITING ran Harry Sloper Jones, Chicago, 111.
Application August 20, 1937, Serial No. 160,004
Claims.
This invention relates to a writing pad of that type comprising alternate writing sheets and carbon sheets, that is adapted for use in typewriters and the like.
In the past, various methods have been used for making such writing pads so that the writing sheets may be separated from the carbon sheets. These methods generally involved the stitching or gluing of the writing sheets and the carbon sheets together along one margin, with the result that when the writing sheets were detached, the carbon sheets remained glued together and were invariably thrown away since they could not easily be used again.
Further when the writing sheets and carbon sheets are stitched or glued together to form a pad which is put through a typewriter, there will be a tendency that the typing on the different writing sheets will not be properly aligned,
since the bound sheets in going around the typewriter roller are bent into an arc. To overcome this objection, attempts have been made to tear ofi the stitched or glued margin of the pad. This operation would tear or mutilate the carbon 5 sheets. I a
It is an object of this invention to overcome the objections to such prior pads, in the provision of a pad that renders it possible to again use the carbon sheets after the writing sheets 30 have been detached.
, It is a further object of this invention to provide such a pad in which the carbon sheets are loosely retained but with provision whereby the writing sheets may be readily detached free 35 of the carbon sheets.
A further object resides in the provision of a pad fromwhich the glued portion of the pad may be detached without injuring the carbon sheets.
The invention comprises the novel structure 40 hereinafter described and more particularly '50 Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view illustrating a modified form of thumb notch in the carbon sheets.
In accordance with this invention, a plurality of writing sheets I are provided and each is formed with a perforated orweakened line 2 suitably spaced from one end margin so as to provide suflicient space for the extension of the carbon sheets beyond such line as will later more fully appear. The writing sheets are then glued together in superposed relation along one end a margin as indicated at 31 A binding I may be glued over the glued edges if desired. Carbon sheets t may then be inserted between the Writing sheets I and extended beyondthe perforated line 2 so that the same may be pinched between 10 the sheets by the fingers above the perforated line 2 when it is desired to detach the writing sheets. These carbon sheets are shorter than the writing sheets.
If desired, the writing sheets properly perfo- 16 rated may be alternately arranged with the carbon sheets before the writing sheets are glued at the end margins. By aligning the opposite ends Ia of the writing sheets-and the adjacent ends of the carbon sheets, the different sheets 20 will occupy the relative positions shown in Figure 1. In the positions shown, it will be noted that one edge of each carbon sheet is located at the line 5 a short space from the glued margin of the writing sheets and a suitable distance 25 outwardly beyond the perforated lines 2 for the pinching operation when the edges Ia of the writing sheets are aligned with the adjacent edges of the carbon sheets.
In Figure 3, it will be noted that the thumb notch 6a is formed by merely clipping off the corner of a carbon sheet.
In order that the writing sheets may be gripped adjacent the margins Ia without gripping the carbon sheets, each of the latter is provided with a cut-out of thumb'notch 6 which may be of the form shown in Figure 1 or Figure 3. By gripping the pad with one hand between the lines 2 and 5 and gripping the sheets I at the notches 6 or 6a with the other hand, it is 40 easily possible to detach the writing sheets from the bound margin 3 by a pull that severs said sheets I along the line 2. The carbon sheets, being held by the hand gripping the bound margin 3 are thus simultaneously separated from the sheets I.
After the writing sheets are detached or separated, the carbon sheets may be released and separated from the stub and reused as desired.
It should be noted that there is a sufilciently wide unglued space between the perforated line 2 and the glued margin 3 of the sheets I for the extension of the carbon sheets beyond the perforated lines 2 for gripping purposes. In other words, the carbon sheets extend beyond the perforated lines a suflicient distance so that they maybe gripped or pinched by the fingers between the writing sheets.
In order that the glued edge of a pad may be detached without injuring the carbon sheets, one of the upper corners of each carbon sheet is clipped off as indicated by the dotted line B of Figure 1. This renders it possibleto grip the writing sheets at the clipped oiT corner indicated by the dotted line 8 with one hand while holding the body of the pad with the other hand for tearing ofi the glued margin 3 of the writing sheets along the perforated lines 2. As the carbon sheets are unattached to the writing sheets, the upper edges thereof will not be torn during this operation, but said upper edges will project slightly, enabling them to be grasped easily in extracting the carbon sheets from between the writing sheets I,
Before using a pad, it will be appreciated that it can be readily jogged to properly align the free carbon sheets with the writing sheets should the carbon sheets be slightly out of alignment.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that the pad involving this invention results in the advantage of a bound pad without affecting the carbon sheets for reuse.
I am aware that many changes may be made.
in the pad without departing from the principles of this invention, and I do not propose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
-I claim as my invention:
1. A writing pad for use in typewriters or the like comprising a plurality of writing sheets secured together at one end margin-and having perforated lines' in registry spaced inwardly of said margin, carbon sheets between said writing sheets, said carbon sheets having thumb notches at one end, the thumb notched ends of said carbon sheets being in alignment with the unsecured ends of said writing sheets and the other ends of said carbon sheets extending beyond said perforated lines for gripping purposes and being unsecured to said writing sheets.
2. A writing pad for use in typewriters or the like comprising alternate writing sheets and carbon sheets, said writing sheets being secured together at one end beyond the ends of the carbon sheets, said writing sheets having perforated lines spaced inwardly ofthe adjacent ends of the carbon sheets, said carbon sheets being unsecured to said writing sheets and having thumb notches adjacent the unsecured ends of said writing sheets.
3. An assembly of alternate writing and carbon sheets, means securing said writing sheets together at one end, said writing sheets having perforated lines spaced inwardly of said secured ends, said carbon sheets having thumb notches adjacent the unsecured ends of said writing sheet and extending beyond said perforated lines for gripi ping purposes and being unsecured to said writing sheets.
4. A writing pad for use in typewriters comprising a plurality of writing sheets secured together along one end margin and having Weakened lines spaced inwardly from such margin, and carbon sheets loosely confined between said writing sheets, the end of each carbon sheet ad- J'acent the bound margin of the writing sheets having a cutaway portionforming a thumb notch for gripping the writing sheets free of the carbon sheets for the purpose set forth.
5. A writing pad for use in typewriters comprising a plurality of writing sheets glued together along one margin and having weakened lines in registry spaced inwardly from such margin, carbon sheets loosely confined between the writing sheets and extending beyond said weakened lines, said carbon sheets having thumb notches at their opposite ends.
