IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHAWL-STRAP AND HEAD-REST.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,812, dated March 4, 1879 application filed August 8, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM H. McLANE, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of v Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests and Shawl- Straps combined; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Figure 1 is an elevation of my device, showlug it as applied to a car-seat, and showing the straps and hooks which secure it thereto, the rest 1n position, the straps for elevating said rest, and one for preventing the spreading of the straps which secure it to the seat. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the parts above enumerated in a different position, with the method of attaching the rest proper tothe supports thereof, the pockets into which said supports pass, the supports, and the handle; and Fig. 3 shows the device as applied to a shawl.

This invention relates to a device to be used as a support for the head of a person when riding in cars or when sitting upon a seat of any description to which it is applicable, such as church-pews, benches in lecture-rooms, and

other places and it consists in the construction and combination of its parts, whereby the device is rendered readily applicable to such seats and to a shawl or other bundle as astrap for holding the same in a convenient form to be carried in the hand, it having combined therewith a handle for that purpose.

In constructing devices of this character, 1 provide padded hooks or strips of metal A, which are of proper form to pass around the edge of a car or other seat, the ends being A for the reception of straps, or metallic hooks A for attaching sald straps thereto. To the loops A at one end of the padded strips A, there is fixed a strlp, A of leather, webbing, or other material which will not injure the covering of the seat. From these loops these strips extend on the rear or outer side of the seat to and over its upper edge, and thence downward to the opposite end of the padded hooks A A, to which they are united by the hooks A A the last portion of these strips being designated by A and both parts being supplied with buckles or slides, by which the strips may be lengthened or shortened as occasion may require. For the purpose of preventing the holding-strips A from spreading too far apart when in use, straps B, of leather or any other suitable material, are attached to them in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, they being provided with buckles or slides for lengthening or shortening them.

To that portion of the strips A A which passes up on the rear or outer side of the back of the seat, and near the upper edge of said seat, there are aflixed pockets 0 G, of leather or of strong cloth, they being for the reception of bars or rods C 0, which support the head-rest 0 These rods or bars are made adj ustable in their pockets 0 O by means of straps G 0 which enter the pockets with the supports 0 and are attached to the lower ends thereof, so that by pulling upon those portions thereof which have the slides or buckles G 0 attached to them the supporting rods or bars can be withdrawn from the pockets and held in their adjusted positions, and thus be made to accommodate persons of different heights. The upper ends of the supporting rods or bars O 0 have tenons upon them, which enter sockets C 0 secured to the outer surface of the rest 0 and thus hold said rest in position when used as such, and at the same time permit it to be detached therefrom and used as the handle of a shawl-strap, as shown in Fig. i). For the purpose of providing an additional support to the head-rest, and to prevent the rods 01' bars O frombeing bent backward by the pressure applied to them when in use, there are loops 0 0 secured to said rods, through which leather or other straps (l (l are passed, which are provided with buckles O O for adjusting their lengths and thus causing them to receiye a portion of the strain put upon the supports (3 O by the occupant of the seat, the lower ends of these straps being held in position and prevented from rising up by being passed through loops or buckles 1) D, attachcdto the strips A A As above stated this device is designed to be used as a shawl or bundle strap as well as a head-rest, and the only change required to make it applicable to such a purpose is to unbuckle the straps O C" and withdraw them from the loops through which they pass and insert them in the loops 0 0 attached to the head-rest, the rods or bars having been withdrawn therefrom, when all that portion except the rest (3 and straps G G" mayberolled up and put into a shawl or other bundle, or put into any other position where they can be conveniently carried, and the straps buckled around the shawl, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.

It will be observed that all that portion of this device which comes in contact with the seat is either so padded or made of such material as not to injure the covering thereof or to scratch the surface when varnished.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combined head-rest and shawLstrap herein described, it being provided with strips A A, having suitable fastening devices at heir ends for attaching it to a seat, and straps 0 G and a handle for adapting it to be used as a shawl-strap.

2. The combination of the hooks A A, the strips A A rods or bars 0 O and the headrest 0 the parts being made adjustable, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the supporting rods or bars C (3, head-rest O, supporting-straps C 0 and straps A A having suitable fastening devices on their ends, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the removable headrest 0, the supporting rods or bars 0 0,

pockets 0 G, and adjusting-straps 0 G the parts being arranged to operate substantially as set forth. 0
