Application October 20, 1936,
9 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in paper cutting machines in which a stack or pile of sheets, such as paper or card board, are supported upon a bed plate of the frame of the machine adapted to be simultaneously cut to size or trimmed by a cutter in the form of a knife blade carried by a carrier mounted in the frame to have reciprocatory movement toward and away from the bed plate, and relates particularly to power operated paper cutting machines embodying means to couple the cutter carrier actuating means with and uncouple it from power means and operative by means actuated when the cutter carrier actuating means moves the cutter away from the bed plate to uncouple the cutter carrier actuating means means, and it is the object of the invention to provide improved means operative when the means to couple and uncouple the cutter carrier 20 actuating means from its driving means is actuated to uncouple the cutter carrier actuating means from its driving or power means when the cutter carrier is moved away from the bed plate and hold the cutter carrier actuating means against movement and adapted to be released carrier actuating means by the operation of the means to couple the cutter carrier actuating means with the power means.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this application Figure 1 is a front elevation of a conventional form of paper cutting machine embodying the invention and showing the parts in operative position to hold the actuating means for the cutter carrier against movement, only so much of the paper cutting machine being shown as is essential to an understanding of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of the machine and partly in section to show the the invention in position to release the actuating means for the cutter carrier and permit of operation thereof to actuate the cutter carrier; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of means to stop the cutter carrier actuating means after a cutting operation of the cutter.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing in connection with a conventional form of paper cutting machine, comprising a frame having a hollow base B arranged with a bed plate 4 for supporting the material, such as i a stack or pile of sheets of paper or card board,
I to be cut or trimmed. An arched member 5 is mounted and supported upon the bed plate 4, the uprights of which arched member are provided with guideways in the form of slots for the engagement of a bar or carrier 6 for a cutter in Serial No. 106,49?
the form of a knife blade 1, the cutter being suspended in said guideways or slots to have reciprocatory movement toward and away from the material support by links 8, 9 pivotally connected at one end to the cutter carrier and at the opposite end pivoted to the arched member. There is provided the usual member to clamp the stack or pile of sheets to be cut to the bed plate adapted to be actuated toward and away from the bed plate by a hand wheel it. A gauge or gauges (not shown) are also provided as usual to position the material on the support relative to the cutter.
A rotatable shaft H is journalled in the base of the frame and is adapted to be connected to driving means, shown in the form of a pulley it loose on the shaft and driven by a belt 53 from a suitable source of power, and shown as an electric motor M mounted on the frame of the machine. Means are provided to couple and uncouple the pulley l2 from the shaft ll, and shown as a conventional form of clutch comprising an expanding clutch arranged within the pulley and adapted to be operated by an expanding device It to engage a drum I l carried by the pulley, the expanding device H being actuated by a cone l5 mounted on the shaft l l to have sliding movement on and rotate with the shaft and adapted to be moved or actuated toward and away from the expanding device M by a manually operative lever or shifter l6 pivotally supported by a bracket mounted on the frame, the one arm of the lever having a bifurcation H to straddle the cone i5 and each bifurcation arm having a pin fixed in and extending inwardly from said arms to engage an annular groove or recess in the cone l5, as shown at l8.
The shaft II is operatively connected to the cutter carrier 6 to move the same toward and away from the bed plate 4 by the rotation of the shaft by a worm IS on said shaft meshing with a worm wheel 20 fixed on a rotatable shaft 22) having a crank connection with the cutter carrier in the form of a link 2! pivotally connected at one end to a pin in a bifurcation of a laterally extending portion of the cutter carrier, as at 22. The opposite end of the link 2| is pivotally engaged on a stud 23 fixed eccentrically in and extending laterally from a face of the worm wheel 20, whereby upon a revolution of the worm wheel there will be imparted a movement to the cutter carrier toward and away from the material support. Means are provided to automatically stop the operation of the actuating means for the cutter carrier after each movement of the cutter carrier toward and away from the material support or bed plate to permit of the removal of the cut or trimmed material and the substituting of material to be cut. For this purpose means are provided to disconnect the shaft H and .latch when the cutter carrier is thereby the cutter carrier actuating means from the driving means #2, and shown as comprising an arm 26 pivotally connected at one end to and extending from an arm 33 of the clutch shifter E6 to intersect and lie contiguous to a face of the worm wheel 20, the arm being provided with engage the abutment by the rotation of the Worm wheel, when the clutch shifter is operated to actuate the cone E5 to connect the shaft with the driving means or pulley i2, and operate the clutch shifter IE to actuate the cone I5 to disconnect the shaft H from the driving means or pulley l2. To facilitate reciprocating and counterbalancing the cutter carrier a further link 2'! is pivotally connected to the pin 22 and the opposite end connected to a pivoted counterweight, as is usual in machines of this character, but which is not shown since it does not constitute an essential part of the present invention.
To prevent movement of the cutter carrier toward the material support or bed plate during the period of removal of the cut or trimmed material from the bed plate and substituting other material to be cut or trimmed, means are provided which is automatically operative to hold the cutter carrier actuating means and thereby the cutter carrier against movement vhen the shifter lever l 6 is operated by the arm 2 from the Worm wheel to actuate the cone i5 or by any other means, such as breakage in the clutch which will actuate the cone 55 in a direction from the pulley I2, to disconnect the shaft H from the driving means or pulley l2 and thus prevent injury to the operator of the machine. This means as shown comprises a lever, one arm 3:8 of which is provided with a nose 29 to arrange said arm as a latch. The lever is fixed on a shaft 36 extending parallelly of the axis of the worm wheel 20 and one position of the lever latch 28 the nose will be positioned to be engaged by the extended end of said stud, as shown in Figure 1. To eifect automatic operation of said moved to position away from the bed plate or material support and the shaft i I disconnected from its driving means l2, the other arm 3| of the latch lever is connected with the clutch shifting lever by a link 32 pivotally connected at one end to the lever arm 3i and the other end to the arm 33 of the clutch shifting lever.
In operation the parts are normally in the position shown in Figure l with the clutch shifting lever l8 positioning the clutch actuating member i5 in unclutching position and disconnecting the shaft Ii from the driving means H2. The pin is in engagement with the abutment 25 on the arm 2% and the stud 23 is in engagement with the nose 29 of the lever latch 28 with the cutter carrier in position away from the bed plate or material support and held in such position by the engagement of the stud 23 with the latch nose 29. In this position of the parts the material to be cut or trimmed is positioned on the bed plate or material support 4 relative to the cutter when the clutch shifting lever I6 is operated to actuate the clutch member I5 to couple the shaft 5 l with the driving means I2, this movement of the clutch shifting lever I6 moving the arm 24 longitudinally and causing the abutment 25 to ride off from the pin 26 and flexing laterally the arm 24, the abutment having a beveled edge whereby this movement of the abutment is facilitated, and to actuate the lever 23, 3! in position to move the latch nose 29 out of engagement with the stud 23, and the blade carrier 6 is operatively connected with the driving means l2, as shown in Figure 3. The parts are maintained in such positions for substantially one revolution of the worm wheel 20 and during the movement of the cutter carrier toward and away from the material support.
