This invention relates to stoves of various kinds and has for its object to provide a new and improved sheet metal construction for a stove plate or grid for a stove.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the stove plate or grid that it cannot buckle due to expansion when heat is applied thereto.
Another object of this invention is to incorporate the stove plate or grid in the top of the stove as an integral part thereof and divide the stove plate or grid into sections by means of slots and openings in order to permit a free expansion of these sections and prevent a buckling thereof.
All these and other objects and attendant advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent from the detailed description thereof which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of an electric stove incorporating my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, taken on the line 2:c2ac of Figure 1.

The stove plate or grid construction for burners or stoves, forming the subject matter of my present invention, is an improvement of the supporting plate or grid illustrated and described in my prior application Serial No. 7,238 filed February 13, 1935. In the present invention the stove plate or grid is divided into sections which may expand separately and thus take care of equal and unequal expansions of these sections Without causing a buckling of any part or portion of the stove plate or grid. The novel arrangement of the openings in the sheet metal stove plate or grid serves to equally distribute the heat generated by the heating unit and efficiently apply the heat against the bottom of any cooking utensil supported thereon.
In the form illustrated in the figures the stove which has the stove plate or grid incorporated therein comprises a sheet metal housing I with a top 2 in which the stove plate or grid is formed as an integral part thereof. The outline of the grid is defined by the small circular ridge 3 in the middle of the grid and the large circular ridge 4 at the outer edge of the grid. The two circular ridges are connected by the radial ridges 5, 5 which divide the grid into sectors. The radial ridges are slotted and their slots 6, 6 terminate in a central opening I provided in the center of the top 2 within the circular ridge 3 of the grid. In this way the sides of the sectors of the grid are free to expand toward each other while the inner ends thereof are free to expand toward the common open center of the top 2. When heat is applied to the grid each sector thereof is thus free to expand in three directions which prevents a buckling of the grid or any part thereof and 5: provides at all times a uniformly even support for the cooking utensil supported thereon.
The sectors of the grid are perforated with segmental slits 8, 8' which are provided with the louvers 9, 9 so as to partially cover the heating 10 unit l0 located within the sheet metal housing I while permitting an efficient radiation thru the grid of the heat generated by the heating unit.
The heating unit l0 may be any one of well known types of heating units, the one illustrated in the drawing being made up of refractory material with open grooves II, II provided in the top thereof and the heating coil I2 mounted in these grooves. This heating unit is clamped tothe bottom of the supporting plate or grid by means of the clamping screws l3 which pass thru the grid and the refractory body of the heating unit at diametrically opposite points near their outer edges thereof. A central anchoring screw 14 passes thru the open center 1 of the grid and the center of the heating unit and carries the washers I5 and I6 which hold the free inner ends of the grid sectors between them level with each other and uniformly spaced from the center of the heating unit. The refractory body of the heating unit is thus clamped against the under side of the stove plate or grid with the sectors thereof free to expand above the heating unit parallel thereto.
Each of the clamping screws l3 extends below the refractory body of the heating unit I0 and clamps a shield l'l against the under side of the top of the housing around the heating unit and holds a cover I8 in place in the open bottom of the housing I to close the housing.
Additional louvered openings I9, 19 are arranged on the outside of the circular supporting and stiffening ribs 4 so as to direct heat from the heating unit against the portion of the bottom cooking utensil which overhangs the stove 5 plate or directs heat against the outer walls of a cooking utensil supported on the stove plate.
I claim:
1. A supporting plate for burners or stoves comprising an integrally formed sheet metal 50 plate, said sheet metal plate having an opening substantially in the middle thereof with openings extending from said first mentioned opening partially across the plate so as to divide said metal plate into sections having their inner 55 free ends grouped around said first mentioned opening and provide for the expansion of said sections toward each other and the middle of the sheet metal plate.
2. A supporting plate for burners or stoves comprising a sheet metal plate as set forth in claim 1 including means mounted in said opening and engaging the free ends of said sections to hold said ends level and expansible toward one another.
3. A supporting plate for burners or stoves comprising an integrally formed sheet metal plate having an opening in the middle thereof and openings extending from said first mentioned opening partially across the plate so as to divide said plate into permanently connected sections and provide for the ex ansion of part of said sections toward each other and said first mentioned opening, and combined stiffening and supporting ribs struck up from said plate so as to substantially surround the separated and fixed portions of each of said sections of said plate.
4. A supporting plate for burners or stoves as set forth in claim 3 in which additional openings are provided in each of said sections between the supporting and stiffening ribs thereof.
5. A supporting plate for burners or stoves comprising an integrally formed sheet metal plate, a small circular supporting and stiffening rib struck up centrally of said plate and a large circular supporting and stiffening rib struck up concentrically thereto at the outer edge of said supporting plate, said supporting plate having a central opening therein within said small circular stiifening rib and openings radiating from said central opening so as to partially divide said supporting plate within said large outer circular rib into sections.
6. A supporting plate for burners or stoves comprising an integrally formed sheet metal plate, a pair of circular stiffening and supporting ribs concentrically struck up on said plate, radial ribs struck up so as to connect said circular ribs and divide said plate into sections,
said plate having an opening centrally thereof and slots extending from said opening intermediate said radial ribs to provide for the expansion of the separated portions of said sections toward each other and the center of said plate.
'7. A stove comprising a sheet metal casing having an integrally formed top and sides with an opening in the top and slots extending from said opening so as to divide said top into sections adapted to expand toward each other and toward said opening, stiffening and supporting ribs struck up from said sections, a heating unit mounted below said top and anchoring means for anchoring the free ends of said sections to keep said sections level and expansible toward one another.
8. A stove comprising a sheet metal casing having an integrally formed top and sides with an opening in the top and slots radiating from said open center so as to divide said top into sections adapted to expand toward each other and the open center of the top, a heating unit clamped to the under side of said top and anchoring means projecting from said heating unit into the opening of said top and engaging the free ends of said sections to hold said sections level with each other and keep them from raising when heat is applied to said sections.
9. A stove comprising a sheet metal casing having an integrally formed top and sides with an opening in the top and slots extending from said opening to divide said top into sections, stiffening and supporting ribs struck up on said top substantially around said sections, a heating unit clamped to the under side of said top, anchoring means engaging the free ends of said sections to keep them level with each other and prevent their raising and lowering when heat is applied to said top, a cover clamped to the under side of said top surrounding said heating unit and a shield suspended in said casing below said cover and between the sides of said casing.
