EDWARD T. HOUSTON, OF
HIS RIGHT TO MARYVILLE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF ISAAC THURSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH-MEASURING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,697, dated February 25, 1879; application filed January 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. HOUSTON, of Maryville, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cloth Rolling and Measuring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to thelet-ters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a rear elevation of my cloth rolling and measuring machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional detail views of the same, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail View.
My invention relates to a machine for rolling and measuring cloth,- and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
My invention is designed as an improvement upon that class of machines for a similar purpose, such as was patented to l). Max, No. 81,921, September 8, 1868.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a proper frame, having on its front end journals for a revolving shaft, having clamped jaws, operated by a sleeve and set-screw. In a proper frame adjustably secured to the topof this frame are journaled two rollers, upon the shaft of the lower of which is secured or formed a quick-screw, which meshes with a cog-wheel having a dial-face. An index upon the semicircular easing of this dial serves to indicate the revolutions of the lower roll. A spiral spring holds the cog-wheel and dial into mesh with the quick-screw, but allows the same to be thrown out of gear by pressing upon said dial-face.
A round-bottomed tube having a loose end, adjustable upon a central bar by means of an arm and set-screw, is situated at the rear lower end of the machine, and forms a part thereof.
The upper portion of the journals upon the front of the machine, in which the clamp-shaft operates, is hinged in two places, and is secured by a pin, as shown.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame, having a central crossbar, a, upon which operates an adjustable arm, I), governed by a set-screw, b, said arm being secured to a movable end in a box, B, having a semicylindrical bottom, Z1 which box serves to hold the boltof cloth.
Above the box B is adjustably secured a frame, 0, having slotted standards 0, in which operate the shafts of adjustable rollers D D, which are held in close contact bya spring, 00. The shaft of the lower roller, D, extends outward, and upon the end is secured a quicksorew, cl, which meshes with a cog-wheel, E, having a dial or indicator face, E, which is held in mesh by the constant force of a spiral spring, E
To a casing, F, around the dialface is an index or finger, f, which indicates on the dial the number of revolutions made by the roll D, and consequently the amount of cloth run through between the rolls D D.
To the front of the horizontal portion of the frame A is secured hinged journal-boxes G, in which operates a clam p-shaft, H, having crank it. The clamps are governed by a sleeve, I, which has a set-screw, a, as shown.
The operation of this invention is obvious.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.. The combination of the cog-wheel E, carrying dial E, with the spring 13', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The rolls D D and spring m, in combination with the quick-screw cl, cog-wheel E, dial E spring E and indeXf, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The frame A, having hinged journals G, as shown, combined with the clamp-shaft H, sleeve I, and set-screw v as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
VVILLIAM A. l nownns, JAMES l-Iousn.
