This invention relates to improvements in. looks, andhas particular reference to a lock for doors, whereby the door is secured top and bottom as well as at the side.
A further object is to produce a device which prevents the customary bolt from being operated when the top and bottom pins are projected.
A further object is to produce a device which may be installed in the ordinary door without materially altering its construction and one which may be economically manufactured.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

The ordinary door lock merely projects a sliding bolt into a socket of the casing of a door, which type of lock is very easy to break out. I have, therefore, devised a lock which not only slides a bolt into the side casing of a door but also projects a pair of pins upwardly and downwardly into the lintel and sill of the door.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the ordinary door having a jamb 6, lintel l and sill 8. At 9 I have shown the casing of a lock which may be set upon the door or mortised thereinto. Extending in opposite directions from the casing 9 are guide tubes II and I2 through which rods l3 and M, respectively, slide. These rods terminate in pins l6 and H which enter sockets l8 and I9, respectively, and are projected and retracted in a manner later to be described.
L-shaped members 2| and 22 are connected to the rods I3 and M, respectively. Each of the L-shaped members are provided with teeth which engage a gear 23 mounted upon a key shaft 24, which shaft may be provided with a handle 26 upon the inside of the door and with a transverse kerf at its outer end for the reception of a key 21 for turning said shaft from the outside of the door as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. It will thus be noted that the gear 23, members 2| and 22, the rods l3 and I4, and the latch bolt may be unlocked from the outside of the door as is apparent from the foregoing description. The L-shaped member 22 carries a projection 28, which when in the position of Fig. 3 prevents the slider 29 from moving along its track 3|. This slider has attached thereto the bolt 32 and is actuated against the tension of springs 33 by a rollback 34 mounted upon the squared shaft 36. This squared shaft may be rotated through the medium of the customary door knob 37 when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the projection 28 lies out of the plane of movement of the slider and consequently the bolt 32 may be actuated.
The manner of looking a door with my arrangement is that the door is closed in the customary manner and then the key 2'! is employed to rotate the gear 23, thus causing the rods l3 and M to move their pins l6 and I1 into the sockets at the top and bottom of the door opening. This act will also prevent the bolt 32 from being retracted until these pins have been withdrawn from their sockets.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a device which will accomplish all the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a casing. tubular guides secured to said casing and extending in opposite directions relative to each other, locking rods movable in each of said guides, L-shaped rack members secured to the inner ends of the rods, a gear positioned between said L-shaped members and having toothed engagement therewith, one of said L- shaped members having a projection secured thereto, a slider mounted in said casing provided with a latching bolt, a roll-back member cooperating with said slider, whereby when said projection is projected it engages with said slider and latches said bolt and when moved inwardly a spring controlled slider carried by said bolt and a rolleback mounted on said spindle and cooperating with said slider, whereby when said projection is projected it engages said slider and. locks said bolt against movement, and when moved inwardly it rel-eases said bolt, and a key operated means associated with said gear, whereby said L-shaped members and rods may be operated to lock said bolt by means of said projection.
