This invention appertains to a novel display device, and more particularly to an animated shop window display for various articles of merchandise.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a device which will readily fit into a shop window for displaying merchandise in an attractive and novel manner, whereby the attention of prospective purchasers will be directed thereto.
Another salient object Of my invention is to provide a window display embodying a series. of members for receiving the merchandise, with means for synchronously rotating said members, whereby not only will the attention of passers-by be attracted thereto, but whereby all sides of the merchandise will be shown.
A further object-of my invention is to provide novel means for mounting the displayed members on a central support, whereby said members can be adjusted to various positions to vary the display and to further the particular characteristics of the merchandise being shown.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a novel window display of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and formation Of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation of my improved window display, with parts of the cover for the base member shown removed.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the window display, with the supporting standards in section.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail elevation of the current-conducting means for the central standard, the wiring for said central standard being shown diagramatically.
Referring to the drawings similar reference characters ponding parts throughout the several views, the letter D generally indicates my improved window display, which, as shown, includes a centrally disposed base ill, which can be of a pyramidal shape.
This base l0 includes a framework H, to
in detail, wherein designate correswhich can be removably secured side plates l2. Rotatably supported by the base it is an upright standard I 3, which is adapted to support any preferred means for holding or displaying merchandise. As suggested in dotted lines in Figure l, the standard can be provided with a series of graduated shelves I l.
Rigidly mounted upon the upper end of the standard is a supporting platform E5, on which can be mounted any desired number of sockets it for lamp bulbs l l. The platform 85 can carry a shade for housing the bulbs. The particular means employed for conducting current to the sockets 66 will be later set forth.
Extending laterally from the oppositesides of the base iii are side wall plates l8 and is, and these plates carry the side displays, as will now be set forth. 7
Each side display comprises a supporting arm 26, which is adjustably mounted on the rear face of its side wall plate. As illustrated, the arm 29 ispivotally mounted intermediate its ends on a bolt H, which carries a winged nut 22 for binding engagement with the arm to hold the same in an adjusted position.
To limit the swinging movement of the arm on the bolt 21!, the arm can be provided with an arcuate guide slot 23, through which extends a guide pin 26 carried by the side wall plate. Arranged upon the arm 2t is a supporting bracket 25,'and this bracket is also mounted, for adjustment. Thus, the some is rockably mounted intermediate its ends on a bolt 26 carried by the arm 29, and the bolt in turn has threaded thereon a Winged nut 27 for binding engagement with the bracket. The bracket is limited in its swinging movement by a pin 28 on the arm, which extends through a slot 29 in the bracket.
The outwardly extending portion of the bracket carries a platform 35, and this platform is provided with a suitable bearing for a rotatable standard or shaft 3|. This side standard or shaft 3! is provided with any desired type of shelves or the like for supporting the merchandise which is to be displayed.
The platform 3!! can be moved in or out on the bracket, and the inner end thereof is preferably bifurcated, as at 32, for straddling a tightening bolt 33 on the bracket. By this arrangement, it can be seen that the arm 20, the bracket 25, and the platform 30 can be adjusted to various positions. This will permit the changing of the display form and permit the device to be adjusted to particular types of windows.
Both the central shaft or standard l3 and the side standards or shafts 31 are driven from a single electric motor 34, which is preferably disposed within the hollow base In. The motor can be mounted upon a strap 35, which can be secured to the framework H of the base. The armature shaft of the motor has keyed or otherwise secured thereto a pinion 36, which meshes with a gear wheel 31 rigidly secured to the central shaft. This central shaft I3 has secured thereto a pair of pulley wheels 38 and 39, around which are trained oppositely extending pulley belts 40 and M, which lead toward the side displays.
Adjustably mounted on the side wall plates 18 and is are adjustable arms 42, which carry stub shafts 43 having keyed or otherwise secured thereto pulley wheels 44 and 45. The belts 40 and M are trained about the pulley wheels 44, and the pulley wheels 35 have trained about the same drive belts 46, which are placed about pulley wheels 4'? carried by stub shafts 48. These stub shafts 48- are carried by the upper ends of the arms 26-, and the stub shafts also carry pulley wheels 49, around which are placed pulley belts 56 leading to pulley wheels 51, which are keyed or otherwise secured to the side standards or shafts 3|.
By this arrangement of parts, it can be seen that all of the standards or shafts are rotated from a single motor.
The arms 42 are made adjustable so that the position of the pulley belts H and 36 can be changed to agree with the positions of the arms and the brackets 25. Each arm 42 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 52, through which extends a guide pin 53' and a tightening bolt 56. The pin and bolt are carried by the side wall plates, and, obviously, by tightening the bolt the arm 42 can be held in its preferred raised or lowered position.
Other displays can be utilized with the device when necessary or desirable, and these additional displays can take the form of boards 55, which rotatably support at their terminals shafts 53. The shafts 53 carry shelves or the like for the goods to be shown, and these shafts have rigidly secured thereto pulley wheels 51. Pulley belts 58 are adapted to be trained about the pulley wheels Bl and over pulley wheels 53, which can be secured to the central shaft l-3. There can be as many of the pulley wheels 59 as may be desired.
Any number of the boards 55 can be utilized, and the same are adapted to extend through notches 66 formed in the base l0, and the base can also be provided with openings 61, through which the pulley belts 58 can extend. The inner ends of the boards 55 can be notched, so that the same can fit tightly against a base plate 62 rigidly secured in the base Hi. The boards 55 can be made in sections telescopically connected, whereby the boards can be lengthened or shortened.
In order to convey current to the sockets I6 during the rotation of the shaft or standard f3, I provide contact brushes 63 and 64, which are connected by means of wires 65 and 65 to the opposite sides of a battery 61 or other source of power.
It is proposed to utilize house current where the same is available, and the base Hi can carry suitable sockets wired respectively to the motor and the brushes, whereby plugs can be utilized for connecting the sockets with the said house current.
The lower brush 64 is in constant engagement with a contact disc 68 secured to but insulated from the pulley wheel 39. The pulley wheel 38 carries any preferred number of sector-shaped contact plates 69, which are insulated from one another and from the pulleys. adapted to successively engage the sector-shaped contact plates 69.
The plates 69' each have connected'therewith a terminal post 10, and the base of each lamp socket I6 is connected to one terminal post. All of the other contacts of the lamp sockets can be electrically connected to a common wire H, which can lead to a terminal post 12, which is electrically connected. with the contact disc 68.
Obviously, during the rotation of the central shaft or standard l3, the lamps I! will be caused to flash on and. off, due to the successive engagement of the brush. 63 with the sector plates 69.
The various operating parts of the display can be hid from the view of observers by any desired type of ornamental housings, which have not been shown in the present instance, due to the various forms which these housings can take.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that I have provided a novel display device for shop windows, which will effectively attract the attention of persons passing by the window.
Changes in details may be made without dcparting from the spirit or the scope of my invention, but what I claim as new is:
1. A display device for shop windows comprising, a base member, a centrally disposed shaft carried by the base member and extending a material distance above the base member, display means for merchandise carried by the shaft, laterally extending side wall plates secured to the base member, adjustable arms on the side wall lates, adjustable brackets on said arms, rotatable shafts carried by the brackets, merchandise display means carried by the last-mentioned shafts, a motor having a direct drive engagement with the central shaft, and means for driving the side shafts from the central shaft including pulley wheels and belts.
2. In a display device for shop windows, a base, a rotatable shaft carried by the base, a motor for rotating, the shaft, a laterally extending side wall plate on the base, a swinging arm on the side wall plate, means for holding the arm in an adjusted position against movement, a swinging bracket on the arm, means for holding the bracket in an adjusted position, a platform slidably mounted on the bracket, a side shaft rotatably carried by the bracket, a pulley wheel on the arm, a pulley wheel on the side shaft, a pulley belt connecting said pulley wheels together, a pulley wheel adjustably mounted on the side wall plate, means connecting the last-mentioned pulley wheel with the first-mentioned. pulley wheel, and means for driving the last-mentioned pulley wheel from the central shaft.
