3 Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in napkin dispensers, means for displaying advertising from tables in restaurants and hotels, and means in connection with the latter, whereby to call the attention of a waiter to the needs or desires of a guest.

The aforesaid objects and purposes have ingeniously been combined in the present device.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevational View of my device.

Figure 2 is a side'elevational view of the same.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.

Figure 4 is a sectional view'on the line 4-4 in Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 55 in Figure 1.

Figure 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the top portion of my device, showing especially the bell and locking device.

Figure '7 is another enlarged detail View, showing in elevation the mechanism for releasing the lock on the front wall; and

Figure 8 is a plan view of a key for unlocking the knob above the bell.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, H3 indicates a housing, of which the three walls are integrally secured together in any suitable manner, while the fourth, or front wall, consists of a door H formed with an opening l2 therein through which napkins may be removed, and which door H is hingedly secured to the bottom of the casing by means of eyelets I3 upon said door and a bar l4 through the casing and said eyelets, while said door is actuated by a spring 5, as may be seen in Figure 5. Said door is further provided upon its outer surface with a mirror l6 arranged in a slanting position thereon;

and said door is locked to the housing by means of catch I1 integral upon the upper end thereof as said catch I1 engages a fiat spring l9, arranged upon the roof of the housing, while'a smaller catch 2! at the top of a sliding member 22 engages the outer ledge 60 of said spring I9; said smaller catch is actuated by a spring SI, and a small cut-out portion 62 is made in the ledge 64] in order to accommodate said spring 6| when the front door is locked, and in this latter position the catch ll engages the spring I9, while the smaller catch 2| engages the ledge 69. It

will in this connection be seen that in order to open the front door II, it is necessary to put the fingers through the opening l2 therein, and

then grasp hold of the lower bent part 63 of the slide 22 in order to pull the spring 19 downward and thus release the grip of the catch ll upon the rear portion of the spring 19. The slide 22 is movably held by the

The corners of the housing proper, except at the front thereof, are provided with angularly bent strips 25 which project slightlyfrom each corner parallel with the surfaces of the walls of the housing, and at a distance from the latter so as to leave space for insertion of advertising matters in the rectangular spaces 28 formed by said strip; to this end other strips 26 are secured near the bottom of the housing to support said advertising matters, while overlapping edges 21 of the top 23 of the device serve to make said enclosures for advertising space complete upon three sides of the housing; said advertising matter is normally inserted by removing the top 29 of the housing. As an adornment upon the device cromium plated bars 33 are mounted at the cor ners of the housing, i. e., upon the outside of the strips 25.

The housing proper It, is by means of a bolt 3% turnably arranged upon a base 35, which in turn is supported by a rubber cushion 32 secured to the latter, a ridge (it upon the base serves to support the housing and to facilitate theturning thereof.

Upon the roof 2!] of the housing a bell 34 is mounted upon a bracket 35; said bell is operated by means of a pin 36 arranged in a hollow cylindrical member 39, which terminates in a headportion 40 and is secured to the bracket 35; the pin 36 terminates at its upper end in a head El; said pin is in turn adapted to act upon the short lever, or bell-hammer 38 in the rather usual manner.

Along the bracket 35 is mounted a pin 4! movable up and down through the roof 2!) and actuated by a spring 42, which has its lower end resting upon said roof and its upper end resting against a cross bar 43 formed upon said pin 4!. Said pin 4| is upon its lower end provided with a head 65 to permit engagement thereof by a key, as will be hereinafter further referred to.

Before the top 29 is secured to the housing above the roof 20 a small plate 44 is arranged above the bell, upon the cylindrical member 39, said plate 44 has an opening 45 therein adapted to receive therethrough the pin 4| which finally projects into a knob 46 also mounted upon the cylindrical member 39, and thus securely prevents said knob 46 from being turned and assured that nobody without knowing the combination can unscrew the top 29 from the housing Ill. Said top has sound-openings 41 therein.

A plate member 56 is made to hold the napkins disposed within the housing in proper position and to push said napkins toward the opening 12; said plate member 50 is operated upon the conventional lever system, being actuated by a kneebent lever having two arms 5i and 52, the latter arm 52 is again acted upon by a spring 53.

Inside the housing and at the bottom thereof, a loose plate 54 is disposed in order to shield the napkins from contact with the bottom mechanism, said plate being provided with a cut-out therein to accommodate the lower arm 52.

The housing is provided with a double roof 2!) and 29', that is to say that below the roof 23 hereinbefore referred to is arranged a second or lower roof 253 in order to obtain a snug compartment for the napkins and also to protect these from contact with the mechanism above. While the end of the upper roof depends overthe lower roof, as shown at 68 in Figure 5, an opening 69 is formed in said depending flap 68 and through this opening a key 70, shown in Figure 8, may be inserted as said key is adapted with its end portion l! to catch the .head of the pin 4! and thus pull down said pin out of its seat 12 in the knob it, thereby releasing the latter and permitting the unscrewing of said knob and subsequent removal of the top. A pin 13 secures the lever arm 52 and spring 53 to the bottom of the housing. 7

At the front inside the door ll, the bottom is extended slightly upward as shown at M, whereby to secure the napkins in proper position even if the front door is opened; said extended bottom has a cut-out portion 15 for the purpose of accommodating the door actuating spring Hi.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we do not therefore wish to limit ourselves to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. Ina device of the class described, a housing provided with a double roof spaced apart, the upper roof member of said double roof having one edge formed as a flap and depending at the front of said housing, said flap being made with an opening at the center thereof, a spring formed with a lug upon its upper surface and arranged in said opening, a door made with a cut-out portion therein and being secured to the front of the housing, the upper end of the door being formed with an inwardly extending projection terminating in a bent portion adapted to engage the lug upon the aforesaid spring, a slide actuated by a coiled spring and movable upon the inner side of the door, said slide terminating at its upper end in an inwardly bent portion adapted to engage the spring proper, whereby to open the door, when'said slide is pulled down, and the grip of the first said inwardly projecting portion upon the lug is released.

2. In a device of the class described, a housing provided with a double roof spaced apart, the upper roof member of said double roof having one edge formed as a flap and depending slightly at the front of said housing, said flap being made with an opening at the center thereof, a spring formed with a lug upon its upper surface and arranged in said opening, a door made with a cut-out portion therein and being hingedly secured to the front of the housing, the upper end of the door being formed with an inwardly extending projection terminating-in a bent portion adapted to engage the lug upon the aforesaid spring, a slide actuated by a coiled spring and movable upon the upper surface of the inner side of the door, said slide terminating at its upper end in an inwardly bent portion adapted to engage-the spring proper, and a flat spring arranged near the bottom of the housing and actuating said door.

3. In a device suitable as a napkin dispenser, advertising medium, and the like, a housing turnable on a base, and being provided with a roof, one edge of said roof being formed as a flap and depending at the front of said housing, said 'flap being madewith an opening at the center thereof, a spring formed with a lug upon its upper surface and arranged in said opening, a door made with a cut-out portion in the upper part thereof and being secured to the front of the housing, the upper end of the door being formed with an inwardly extending projection terminating in a bent portion adapted to engage the lug upon the aforesaid spring, a slide actuated by a coiled spring and movable upon the inner side of the door, said slide terminating at its upper end in an inwardly bent portion adapted to engage the spring proper, whereby to open the door, when said slide is pulled down, and the grip of the first said inwardly projecting portion upon the lug is released.
