In this type of window construction the windows are hinged to the outside'of the window frame and are adaptedto open outwardly, the interior of the frame being equipped with a screen. The windows are "adapted to be opened and closed through-themedium of an operating member secured to thelower edge of the window and working through an opening in the bottom rail of the Window screen. Since Windows of this character are secured only at their bottom edges, this type of construction has been subjected to some criticism due to the fa'ct that the windows in some instances become slightly warped at their upper edges so that they do not come into the proper closed position and .have a tendency to rattle during weather'disturbances.
It is, therefore, one object of this invention; to produce a fastening device of 12118 01355 described which is especially adapted for use in locking-the top portions of windows of this character inclosed position. This fastening deviceconsists in a. general .way of a plate hook member pivotally mounted in a notch or other suitable apentune provided in the top of the windowscreen. Interposed in the aperture A formed between the bottom of the block 2| and the bottom of the notch 22 in this form of my invention; is an elongated plate member 26 which is pivot-. ally supported at its intermediate portion within the aperture in anyv suitable manner such as by means of a bearing pin 28 formed on or secured tothe plate member and extending into a bearingpassage 29 -in the block. One end-of the plate 26 is shown as being provided with an extending finger 30' which is curved soas to form a hook adapted to'extend over-a suitable restraining'member 3|,such restraining member being shown as comprising an angle screw which has one end mounted in the top rail l3 of one of the windows: l3. It will be observed from Figs. 4 and that the finger 30 has a cam shaped forward nose 34 andthat the pivot pin 28'on the plate 26 is eccentrically positioned with respect to the. intermediate portion of the plate member so that the finger has the effect of reaching out to extend over the restraining member 3! anddraw the'top of the window into a tightly closed position in the event it has become slightly warped or sprung.
The inner end of the plate member 26 is provided with what I may term an operating handle 36 which extends inwardly beyond the vertical plane of the inner closure member or screen so that the fastening plate c'an be readily swung to fastening and unfastening positions. 1
B For thepurpose of facilitating the actuation of this fastening plate, 'I'show the operating handle 36 as-being equipped with a flexible "operating member such as a cord 31 which is secured through an opening .38 in the handle and extends in opposite directions therefrom through eyes orsuppo'rting members 40 and 4| secured to the sides of -the window frame-near the upper edgethereof. The cords 3! may be extended through these supporting members and hang downwardly along the sides of the window frame where they may be concealed from view bydrapes or curtains and may be easily reached to actuate the fastening device. p As was pointed out hereinabove, it was the principal object of this inventionto provide a fastening device of the class described which is constructed so as to leave no opening through which insects and the like may enter the room when the windows are in open position. With this in mind, my invention contemplates a device which will leave no such opening regardless of the position which the fastening device occupies at any time. This object is accomplished by forming or shaping the intermediate portion of the plate member 26 so that its opposite edges are always in contact with the two sides of the aperture or notch at some point or points for any angular position "which the plate member other side. i v S of the intermediate portion of the plate mem- Lbeiiis substantially equal tothe distance D and may assume from either of the extreme positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In this form of my invention this is accomplished by forming the two opposite edges of the intermediate portion in the plate member along circular arcs which have a common center in the pivotal axis of the plate member, the radii of such arcs being substantially equal to the distance from such common center to the nearest point of the corresponding side of the aperture or notch.
In other words, as pointed out above, the pivot pin 28 is eccentrically mounted on the interme- ---diate portion of the plate member so that the distance D to one side of the aperture is substantially greater than the distance D to the The radius of curvature on the side the radiusof curvature on the side S is substantially equal to the distance D so that in' this form of my invention the plate member is always in contact with the sides of the aperture at two points. As was pointed out above the finger30 is in effect an extension of the side S. Such finger,.however, does not necessarily conform with the circular are along which the side S of the intermediate portion is formed.
It is to be" understood of course that the complete closure of thenotch by the plate member is not necessarily restricted to the use of circular' arcsfin the edges of the plate member but may be obtained through the use of cam surfaces on the plate member, also that the sides of the notch may'be curved or angularly disposed to cooperate with the plate member in obtaining this effect.
-'In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6- and 7, the aperture A, within which the plate hook member 26is contained, is formed within the box member 50 which is mounted in an opening 5| which extends through the top rail [215 of the screen frame. The plate 26, which is identical to the plate member 26 shown in Fig. 4, is secured in the box by a pivot pin 52 and thebox is provided with a face flange 53 whereby it is secured to the rail I2t by means of screws 54.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the device contemplated by this invention may be cheaply manufactured and can be easily and quickly installed at any time without the exercise of any great amount of skill. It is'also to be understood that while I have described the' device as being especially adapted for use in conjunction with outwardly opening casement windows that the device may find various other applications as a fastening device. The invention; therefore is not limited to the precise details in construction nor the precise application'fde'scribed above, but includes within its scope whatever changes fairly come within the spirit of the appended claims.

, 1. ,For use in looking window closures embracing inner. and outer closure members, the inner member having a notch in one edge, a fastening device comprising a bearing block secured in the top of said notch in spaced relation with the bottom of said notch so as to leave an aperture through said closure; a plate member having its intermediate portion contained in said aperture; pivot means associated with said block and pivotallysupporting the intermediate portion of said plate member in said aperture; a hook on one end of saidplate member projecting from one side of said aperture.
2. For use in looking window closures embracing inner and outer closure members, the inner member having a notch in one edge, a fastening device comprising a bearing block secured in the top of said notch in spaced relation with the bottom of said notch so as to leave an aperture therebetween; a plate member having its intermediate portion contained in said aperture; pivot means associated with said block and pivotally supporting the intermediate portion of said plate member in said aperture; a hook on one end of said plate member projecting from one side of said aperture; and an operating handle on said plate member projecting from the other side of said aperture, the intermediate portion of said plate member being shaped so that the opposite edges thereof are at all times in substantial engagement with the sides of said aperture.

For use in locking-window closures embracing inner and outer closure members, the inner member having a notch in one edge, a fastening device comprising abearing block secured in the top of said notch in spaced relation with the bottom of said notch so as to leave an aperture therebetween; a platemember having its intermediate portion contained in said aperture; pivot means associated with said block and pivotally sup-porting the intermediate portion of said plate member in said aperture; a hook on one end of said plate member projecting from one side of said aperture; and an operating handle on said plate member projecting from the other side of said aperture, the intermediate portion of said plate being shaped so that its opposite edges are in the form of circular arcs having a common center in the pivotal axis of said plate and having radii equal respectively to the distances from said pivotal axis to the nearest point of the respective edges of said aperture.
4. For use in looking window closures embracing inner and outer closure members, the inner member having a notch in one edge, a fastening device comprising a bearing block secured in the top of said notch in spaced relation with the bottom of said notch thereby forming an apering from one side of said aperture; and an, operating handle on said plate member projecting from the other side of said aperture the intermediate portion of said plate being shaped so that its opposite edges are in the form of circular arcs having a common center in the pivotal axis of said plate and having radii equal respectively to the distances from said pivotal axis to the nearest point of the respective edges of said aperture, the radius of one of said curves being substantially greater than. the radius of the other curve.
5. For use in looking window closures embracing inner and outer closure members, the inner member having a notch in one edge, a fastening device comprising a bearing block secured in the top of said notch; a plate member having its intermediate portion interposed between the bottom of said bearing block and the bottom of said notch; pivot means associated with said block and pivotally supporting the intermediate portion of said plate member in said notch; a hook on one end of said plate member projecting from one side of said notch; and an operating handle on said plate member projecting from the other side of said notch, the intermediate portion of said plate being shaped so that its opposite'edges are in the form of circular arcs having a common center in the pivotal axis of said plate and having radii equal respectively to the distances from said pivotal axis to the nearest point of the respective edges of said notch, the radius of one of said curves being substantially greater than the radius of the other curve and said hook being a continuation of the edge of said plate having the greatest radius of curvature.
6. For use in looking window closures having a fastener member receiving opening therein: a fastener member pivotally mounted within the opening in the window closure, said fastener member comprising an intermediate portion forming a closure for the opening in the window closure, an eccentric hook on said plate member projecting from one side of the opening in the window closure and a handle on said plate member projecting from the other side of the opening in said window closure, said intermediate portion having opposite edges extending to the sides of the opening in said window closure, said edges being formed on two arcs having as a common center the pivotal axis of said member, but having different radii.
