DEVICE FOR SUSPENDING STRIPS FROM CEILINGS AND THE LIKE Original Filed Dec. 15, 1936 TR I - .27. W. Mealey I By W m A iiorneys l t Inventor Patented July 12, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR SUSPEND'ING STRIPS FROM CEILINGS AND THE LIKE David W. Mealey, Foster, Oreg.
2 Claims.
This invention is a device to facilitate the suspending of strips, such as for example, fly-catching strips from ceilings or the like.
Briefly the invention consists in the provision of a device which may be readily mounted on the end of a broom handle, stick or the like and which is equipped for holding a strip of fly paper or the like in roll form and is also equipped for holding a nail passed through one end of the strip to facilitate the driving of the nail into a ceiling or the like for securing one end of the strip to the ceiling.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study 5 of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the application of the invention to one end of a broom handle.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view further illustrating the application of the invention and Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the invention comprises a cylindrical member 5 of metal or other suitable material and adapted to be sleeved on to one end of the handle 6 of a broom I, or one end of any suitable stick, rod, or the like.
At one end the member 5 is preferably provided internally with sharp threads 8 adapted to be embedded into the wood of the handle 6 as the member 5 is sleeved on tothe end of the handle whereby to provide for the positive securing of the member 5 on the handle or member 6.
At its relatively opposite end the member 5 is closed as at 9 and at said closed end is provided with a centrally located boss l0 forming a seat for the head of a tack ll.
Jaw members I2 have shanks I20, secured to opposite sides of the boss ID. The jaws l2 as clearly shown are disposed in overlying spaced relation to the boss [0 and terminate in slightly spaced relation relative to one another; the jaws serving to retain the head of the tack II and the end of the strip I3 equipped with said tack in proper association with the boss 10,
Also, at one side thereof intermediate its ends the member 5 is provided with a spring clip I4 with which may be readily engaged a roll of fly paper or other strip material [3 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3.
In using the device the roll [3 is engaged with the clip l4, and through a free end of the strip is 5 passed the shank of the tack I I. Said end of the strip and the head of the tack is then engaged with the boss ID on one end of the member 5 being retained in position through the medium of the jaw members i 2 as shown. 10
The member 5 is then sleeved on to the end 6 of the handle of the broom I and the parts are now in the position shown in Figure 1.
It will thus be seen that with the device thus positioned on the end of the broom handle, the 15 broom handle may then be made use of for driving the nail home to its fastening position on a ceiling or the like. When the nail has been driven home the broom handle 6 is moved laterally so as to slip the jaw members I5 off the 20 head of the nail. As the handle 0 with the device thereon is lowered, the strip [3 will unwind, and through the medium of the nail l I will be held in suspended position from the ceiling.
It will thus be seen that in a device of this 25 character a broom handle or the like may be made use of to facilitate the suspending of strips of fly paper, garland-strips or the like from a ceiling or other relatively high supports.
Having thus described the invention, what is 30 claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, a member adapted to be sleeved on to one end of a broom handle or the like, a clip projecting laterally from said member for engaging a roll of 0 strip material, and means on one end of said member for engaging a nail head for releasably retaining said head on the member with the shank of the nail projecting upwardly from said end of said member. 0
2. A device of the character described, comprising a cylindrical member adapted to be sleeved on to the end of a rod, a clip projecting laterally from said member for engaging a roll of strip material, said member being provided at one 45 end with a boss, and a pair of jaw members secured to the boss at opposite sides thereof and having parts overlying the boss to cooperate therewith for retaining a nail head on said boss.
DAVID W. MEALEY.
