2 Claims.
My invention relates to road building and more particularly to improvements in road beds for highway roads.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a road structure and road bed therefor rendering the road structure waterproof at the bottom and sides thereof and adapted to deflect water rising underneath the road bed, or settling thereunder, to the sides of the structure for drainage through the usual ditches at the sides of the road.
Another object is to provide a road structure which may be easily and economically built, is impervious to water at the top, bottom and sides thereof and which will not crack or buckle under the action of frost.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the following description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In the said drawing:
Figure 1 is a View in transverse section of a road structure embodying my improvements, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail view in transverse section.
Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawing by numerals, in the illustrated embodiment thereof the road structure of my invention comprises a casing-like base, or bed, guard I of galvanized tin or other suitable metal impervious to rust having opposed vertical side flanges 2 and a bottom 3 of inverted. cone shape in cross section. The guard I is sunk into the ground represented at 4 with the upper edges of the flanges 2 flush therewith. Ditches 5 are dug along side the flanges 2. At the angles of the guard Ithe metal is joined together by electric welding as indicated in Figure 2, at 6. Within the guard I is a bottom layer 1 of earth upon. which are built up bottom, intermediate and top layers or laminations, 8, 9 and Ill, respectively, of cement, or asphalt, and stone, the stone being graduated in size throughout successive layers. In the bottom layer 8 the stones are relatively large, in the intermediate layer 9 smaller, and in the top layer Ifl chipped stones, or stone dust,
is utilized. The bottom layer 8 is sunk into the layer 7 of earth and formed with beveled side edges II spaced from the bottom 3 of the guard I parallel therewith for freedom for expansion under different temperatures. The intermediate layer 9 and the top layer It extend. to the side flanges 2. The top surface of the upper layer I0 is crowned in the usual manner and tapers to the side flanges 2 flush with the upper edges of the latter. 10
As will now be seen, the described road structure is rendered impervious to the action of water at the bottom and sides thereof by the guard I and similarly protected at its top by the material of the top layer I0. Any water accumulating under the structure, as from springs is deflected, in rising to the surface, by the guard I, to the ditches 5. The invention will, it is believed, be understood from the foregoing description therefore without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention is susceptible of modification, as regards details described, without departing from. the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to all such modifications falling within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
1. A road structure comprising a casing-like guard of galvanized metal including side flanges and a bottom of obtuse angled shape in cross section, respectively, and adapted to be embedded in the ground, a layer of earth in said guard, and a laminated structure of cement and stone built up on said layer, the lowermost lamination being spaced at its side edges from said flanges, and the remaining laminations fitting against the said flanges.
2. A road structure comprising a casing-like guard of galvanized metal including side flanges and a bottom of obtuse angled shape in cross section, respectively, and adapted to be embedded in the ground, a layer of earth in said guard, and a laminated structure of cement and stone built up on said layer, the lowermost lamination being spaced at its side edges from said flanges, and the remaining laminations fitting against the said flanges, and ditches extending along said side flanges.
