Description

July 12-, 1938. R TOLO 2,123,316
HEADREST ATTACHMENT FOR BATHTUBS Filed Oct. 7. i957 Patented July 12, 1938 UNITED s'rnrs s FA'E'ENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to' certain new and use ful improvements in headrest attachment for bath tubs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a headrest attachment for bath tubs especially designed for use by women for the protection of the head and hair to keep the hair in a dry condition while taking a bath.
A further object of the invention is to provide a headrest attachment for bath tubs of the foregoing character wherein the headrest is placed at one end of a bath tub and retained in position therein by means of suction cups engaged with a wall of the tub or a hook to be engaged with a tub flange with an adjustable frame embodying a spring element and a rubberized sheet or the like for the support of the head at the proper elevation with respect to the water level in the bath tub.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a'vertical cross-sectional view of a headrest attachment for bath tubs constructed in accordance with the present invention, one end of a bath tub being fragmentarily illustrated in section with the attachment anchored in position by means of suction cups;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the headrest attachment for bath tubs removed from the tub and with the rubber or flexible headrest per se removed from the support; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a hook device for anchoring the attachment in position in lieu of suction cups.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing and particularly to Figure 2, the headrest attachment for bath tubs comprises a skeleton frame having end plates 5 of substantially triangular formation with substantially lower straight edges 6 that are connected at their forward ends by a forward cross rail 1. The upper ends of the plates 5 are connected by a head rail 8. When the headrest is placed in a bath tub 9 as shown in Figure 1, the same may be placed at the desired elevation with respect to the bottom of the bath tub and the level of water in the tub, the head rest being anchored in position at one end of the tub by means of suction cups l supported on the head rail 8 as at H and engaged with the end wall of the bath tub.
An adjustable head support per se is carried by the skeleton frame and includes a pair of arms i2 respectively pivoted as at I3 at their upper ends to the upper ends of the end plates of the skeleton frame While a relatively stiff coil spring it is anchored at its ends to the forward free ends of the arms E2. The forward edges of the end plates of the skeleton frame form a continuous arc and are toothed as at I5 to be engaged by opposite ends of a rod it carried by the lower end of a pair of links H respectively pivoted as at 88 to the arms l2 intermediate the ends thereof. It will be understood that the arms 12 are adjustable in vertical directions by changing the supporting points of the rod it on the teeth l5. A rubberized or other flexible sheet 19 is anchored at one edge to the head rail 8, the ends thereof being anchored to the upper sides of the arms 52 while the lower end of the sheet is secured to the spring 14.
With the device positioned as illustrated in Figure 1, a person reclining in the bath tub 9 supports his head on the flexible sheet is and the resiliency of the spring I l at the lower ends of the arms l2 provides an exceptionally comfortable support. The elevation of the arms l2 may be varied so that the hair of the bather while reclining in the tub may be supported at a sufficient distance above the water level in the tub to maintain the hair in a dry condition.
In lieu of the suction cups l0 for securing the headrest in position, there is shown in Figure 3 a wire construction of hook Mia carried by a head rail 8a of a headrest that is especially adapted for use in connection with bath tubs having an exposed top flange.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and use thereof will at once be apparent and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:--
1. In a headrest attachment for bath tubs, a skeleton frame comprising end plates, head and base rails connecting the end plates, the forward edges of the end plates being of arcuate formation and toothed, a pair of arms pivotally connected to the upper ends of the end plates, means carried by said arms adjustably engaged with the toothed edges of the end plates for supporting the arms at different elevations and a flexible headrest supporting sheet attached to said arms.
2. In a headrest attachment for bath tubs, a skeleton frame comprising end plates, head and base rails connecting the end plates, the forward edges of the end plates being toothed, a pair of arms pivotally connected to the upper ends of the end plates, means carried by said arms adjustably engaged with the toothed edges of the end plates for supporting the arms at different elevations and a flexible headrest supporting sheet attached to said arms.
3. In a headrest attachment for bath tubs, a stationary and a movable frame member hingedly connected together at adjacent sides thereof, means associated with the frame members for holding the movable frame member in adjusted position relative to the stationary frame member and a flexible head supporting sheet carried by the movable frame member.
4. In a headrest attachment for bath tubs, a stationary and a movable frame member hingedly connected together at adjacent sides thereof, means associated with the frame members for holding the movable frame member in adjusted position relative to the stationary frame member and a flexible head supporting sheet 10 carried by the movable frame member, said frame member being of skeleton construction and substantially rectangular, and said means including racks on the stationary frame member and means carried by the movable frame en- 15 gageable with the racks.
