3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved door stop and seeks, among other objects, to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to a door and which will efectually retain the door in a desired open position.
Another object of the invention` is to provide a door stop embodying a bolt which is engageable` in a socket for retaining thedoor in a closed position. l
A further object of the invention is to provide a door stop which may be operated easily and which will be positive in action.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be manufactured to market at a reasonable price.
Other and` incidental objects. of the invention not specifically mentioned will render'themselves apparent as the description of the invention proceeds.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, in the preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral I indicates a door which is mounted in a frame 2. The door maybe either of the single type or it may comprise one of two doors, as shown in Figure 1. The door is mounted overY a preferably concrete floor 3 in which is embedded a latch plate 4 having a socket 5 therein.
Mounted on the door I near the swinging rail thereof and on the lower portion of said rail, is a frame or body 6 which is 'preferably formed of channel iron andis U-shape in cross section. The frame is secured to the door by means in cluding brackets 'I so that it will be rigidly mounted thereon at all times. Swingingly mounted on the frame at its upper end portionis an actuating lever 8 which is U-shape in cross section and straddles the upper end of the frame 6. The lever 8 is formed with side walls 9 which taper in width to a point substantially midway of the length thereof, as better seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. The walls 9 are of uniform width throughout the remainder of their length. Formed in the frame or body 6,- near the upper end thereof, are oppositely disposed longitudinally arranged rectangular slots ID. The lever B is secured in position on the frame by means of a pin II which extends through the frame and through said lever. Formed in the body 6, near its lower end, are oppositely presented longitudinally` arranged rectangular slots I2, the purpose of which will be described hereinafter.
Snugly but slidably mounted within the body 6 and extending throughout the major portion of its length is a preferably channel iron actuating member I3. As better seen in Figure 3 of the drawings, the actuating member I3 is provided near its lower end with a bolt I 4. The bolt I4 is formed with a plurality of openings I5 and said bolt is secured to the member I3 by means of pins I5 extending through certain of said open ings I5. It should be understood that the height of the bolt I4 may be varied by setting said bolt at a desired height within said member I3 and projecting the pins I6 through the proper regis tering openings I5. The height of this bolt will, of course, be determined by the actual operating conditions.
Shiftably connecting the lever 8 with the actuating member I3 is a link Il which comprises side rods I8 and a connecting rod I9, which connecting rod projects through the slotl Il and through the upper .end portion of the actuating member I3. As shown in Figure 3, the connecting rod is in the form of a bolt with a locking nut 26 thereon. The corresponding opposite ends of the side rods are connected to substantially the mid-portions of the walls 9 and in off center relation to the pin II by means of studs 2|. Riveted or otherwise secured to the actuating member i3 within the slot I6, is a hook 22 having a depending bill 23 thereon. Said bill is adapted to engage in an opening 24 formed in a keeper plate 25 which is carried on the actuating member of an adjacent door stop, as seen in Figure l, for retaining a pair of the devices in locked position when used on a double door, and thus provide supplemental locking means.
swingingly connected to the frame 6, near its lower end and adjacent its forward wall, is a stop bar 26 which is substantially U-shape in cross section and is formed preferably from heavy sheet metal. As better seen in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, the bar is provided with side walls 21 and a bottom wall 28 which is cut away near its inner end to accommodate the frame 6 and permit ready swinging movement of the bar. 'I'he stop bar is connected to the frame by means of a pin 29 and carried in the free earth-engaging end of the bar is a foot 30 which is reduced near its inner end to t snugly in the lower end of the bar 26, rivets 3! retaining the foot in position on the bar. Y
swingingly connecting the stop bar 26 with the actuating member I3 is a link 32 which is of similar construction to the link Il and comprises side arms 33 and a connecting rod 34 which eX- tends through the slot I2 in the frame and is flrmly secured to the actuating member.
The operation of the device is as follows:
'I'he device, as shown in Figure 1, is in locked position with the bolt engaging in the socket 5. When it is desired to free the bolt from the socket and open the door, the lever 8 is raised upwardly and outwardly for raising the actuating member I3 within the frame 6 and, at the same time, freeing the bolt I4 from the socket 5. The door may then be opened to the desired position. As the bolt is being lifted from the socket 5, the stop bar 26 will be swung downwardly and after the door has been opened the lever 8 is shifted upwardly to its limit for shifting the bar 26 downwardly so that the foot 30 will be engaged with the surface beneath the bottom edge of the door. The stop bar will then retain the door in the desired opened position.
When it is` desired to close the door, it is only necessary to shift the lever 8 partially downwardly so as to free the foot 36 from the surface therebeneath. The door may then be closed. After the door has been closed to a position wherein the bolt I4 overhangs the socket 5, the lever 8 is shifted downwardly to its limit. 'I'he bolt I4 will, by this shifting movement, be engaged in the socket 5 and the stop bar 26 will be shifted to its inoperative position, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The device, as will be readily understood, may be operated with the utmost facility and may be installed with ease.
Referring now more particularly to the modification of the invention illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings, the numeral 35 indicates the frame of a door on which is mounted a body 36, formed preferably of wood. The body is supported on the door frame by means of brackets 3l and swingingly connected to the body 36 between said body and the door frame, and between said brackets 3l, is an actuating member 38 provided at its lower end with a bolt 39 which is secured to the actuating member by means of rivets 40. It should be understood that the bolt may be adjusted to various heights on the actuating member, as determined by use. Swingingly connected to the actuating member 38, at its upper end, is a handle or lever 4I which is connected to said actuating member by a hinge 42. Said handle is also connected to the body 33 by means of a preferably heavy wire link 43, the bight portions of which are journaled in preferably metal sleeves 44 which are embedded in the handle and body. swingingly connected to the lower end portion of the actuating member 36 is a stop bar 65 which is preferably formed of wood and is provided with a metal toe plate 46. The stop bar is connected with the actuating member by means of a hinge 4'I and is also pivotally connected to the body by means of a link 48. As best seen in Figure 6 of the drawings, the lower end portion of the body 36 is tapered in thickness, as shown at 49, and the body portion of the stop bar is also tapered in thickness so that said bar may lie, when in inoperative position, near the face of the body 36 throughout the major portion of its length. 'I'he stop bar will thus be kept out of the way when not in use.
The device, as shown in full lines in Figure 6 of the drawings, is in locked position with the bolt 39 disposed in a socket 56 which is sunk into the surface beneath the door. The door is thus locked in position. When it is desired to open the door, the handle 4I is swung outwardly and downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 6, for rocking the actuating member inwardly and upwardly and, at the same time, shifting the stop bar outwardly and downwardly, as shown in dotted lines. The handle may be shifted only partially while the door is being swung so that the bolt 39 will be freed from the socket and the stop bar will be out of engagement with the surface beneath the door. When the door has been swung to the desired open position, the handle may be swung to its downward limit for engaging the toe plate 46 in the surface beneath the door and thus retain the door in open position.
Mounted on the actuating member 38 on one side wall thereof, substantially medially of its length, is a hook 5I having a bill 52 adapted to engage in an opening formed in a keeper plate 53 which is secured to the actuating member of an adjacent door stop of'identical construction with the one just described. It will be understood that the general idea of the modicationy is identical with that of the preferred form.
Referring now to the modication of the invention as shown in Figure 8 of the drawings, the numeral 54 indicates the frame of a door on which is mounted a body 55 which is formed of wood or other suitable material. An actuating member 56 is associated with the body 55 and is adapted to be positioned in superposed relation to said body 55. A link 51, which is preferably formed from heavy wire, has one end portion swingingly connected to the body 55. As better shown in Figure 9 of the drawings, the bight portions of the link are secured in sleeves 58, in the body 55, which are preferably formed of metal, so that swinging of the link will not cause the relatively soft wood to wear away. A handle 59 is connected to the actuating member 56 by means of a hinge 66. The opposite end portion of the link 51 is swingingly connected to the handle 59 so that, as will be seen, the link 5l swingingly connects the body 55, through the handle 59; te the actanng member `se 'which is, as stated-,1 swingingl'y connectedto said handle 59'." The handle is shiftable `outwardly and up- Wardlyfor lowering theactuating member along the surfacey ofthe body 55. Referring now more particularly to the modication of the invention as shown in Figures l0, 11 and 12, the numeral B5 indicates a preferably wood body or frame which is secured to a wall 65 by means of screws 61. Slidably mounted on the body 65 is a preferably wood actuating member 68 which is held in overlying relation to the frame or body by means of guide loops 69. A latch 'l0 is carried on the actuating member 63 and is adapted tb engage a keeper plate located adjacent the door for that purpose. Mounted on the body 65 near its upper en-d are guide plates 'll which are formed preferably from sheet metal and extend outwardly in parallel spaced relation at each side of the body. The guide plates may be of any desired shape but, in the present instance said plates are formed with an arcuate bottom edge and straight top and rear edges 13 and '14. Formed in the guide plates 'Il are oppositely disposed guide slots 15, the corresponding bottom edges of each of said guide slots being formed with a recess 16. As best seen in Figure 12 of the drawings, the lower end portion of the actuating member is cut away medially of its width to receive a bolt Tl which is adjustably held in position in the actuating member by means of pins 18V. Associated with the actuating member 68, at its upper end, is a handle 19 which may be formed of wood and which is connected to said actuating member by means of a hinge 89. 'I'he upper end portion of the handle is normallydisposed between the guide plates l'l and guide screws or bolts 8| are passed through the slots and into the handle so that said handle will, in its swinging movement, be shifted outwardly to follow said guide slots 15. Mounted on the lower end portion of the body 65 is a pair of guide plates 82 which are of similar construction to the guide plates H but diier in the respect that guide slots 83 are provided and said guide slots are relatively short and are disposed in parallel spaced relation to the substantially straight bottom edges 84 of said plates. The plates are provided with arcuate edges 85. member 68 at its lower end, is a stop bar 8B, preferably formed of wood, which is provided with a metal end 8l and is swingingly connected to the actuating member @8 by means of a hinge 8B. The inner end portion of the stopy bar is adapted to swing between the guide plates 85 and said stop bar is provided at each side with guide bolts 89 adapted to slide in the guide slots 83. As better seen in Figure 12 of the drawings, the stop bar is provided at its inner edge, adjacent the hinge, with a medial cut away portion Associated with the actuating 90. 'This cut awai7 portion is adapted toreceive the lowerend portionof the bolt 11 when said stop bar isvin operative position so that the stop bar will be permitted 4to swing downwardly to its fullest extent. p
In operation, it will be seen, by referring to Figure 11 of the drawings, thatwhen the device is in operative position, the lever 19 will be permitted Vto assume" a position in auvertical plane with the actuating memberr68 and by virtue of thefact that` the guide plates 82, with theguide `slots 83, are employed, `the stopibar will be permitted to lie in a substantially vertical plane against vthe actuating member 68, the lower end portion of said stop bar beingshiftedoutwardly with the guide bolts 89 riding in the slots 83. By this arrangement, the device,rwhen ininoperative position, will take up buta small `amount of space and the stop bar will not get in the way when the door is being swung. As best seen inv Figure 1l, the bolt l1 will be seated in an appropriate socket, as in the other forms of the invention, when the device is in inoperative position.
When it is desired to shift the stop bar to operative position, the lever 'I9 isV swung outwardly and downwardly, the guide bolts 8l riding in the guide slots 15 of the guide plates 1|. As the lever is swung outwardly tothe extremities of the slots 15, the actuating member 68 will be permitted to rock slightly upwardly between the guide plates and, at the same time, the stop bar will be swung outwardly and downwardly, its swinging movement being taken care of by the riding of the guide bolts 89 in the guide slots 83. When the lever has reached its lowermost position, substantially parallel to the actuating member, the stop bar will be disposed at its lowermost position with the guide bolts 89 abutting the inner extremities of the slots 83. As best seen in Figure 11 of the drawings, the recess 16 is formed along the longitudinal edge of the guide slots 15 substantially medially of the lower boundaries thereof and, when the lever 19 is in its lowermost position, the guide bolts will be seated in these recesses formed in the plates. These recesses permit the lever to lie in substantially parallel relation with the actuating member when the device is in operative position. Aside from the renements embodied in the employment of the guide plates and guide bolts, this modification of the invention is essentially the same as that of the preferred form and the other modifications.
Attention is directed to the fact that I have provided in the preferred form of the invention and in the modifications, a device simple in construction and positive in operation, which may be manufactured in quantity to retail at an attractive figure.
`Having thus described the invention in the specification, what I claim as new is:
1. A door stop including a body adapted to be secured to a surface, an actuating member associated with the body, a handle connected with the actuating member, a link connecting the handle to the body, said link having bight portions, sleeves carried by the body and handle and' journaling the bight portions, a stop bar swingingly connected with the body at the end remote from the handle connection, a link connecting the stop bar with the actuating member, and a toe plate carried by the stop bar, said handle being shiftable upwardly for permitting outward swinging movement of the stop bar with consequent engagement of the toe plate thereof with a surface beneath the rst mentioned surface whereby said first mentioned surface will be prevented from shifting, said handle and stop bar being shiftable toward and away from each other in stop bar retracting and engaging directions respectively.
2. A door stop including a body, an actuating member associated with the body and adapted to swing outwardly therefrom, a handle associated with the actuating member, a hinge swingingly connecting the handle with the actuating member, a link swingingly connecting the handle and one end of said body, a stop bar, a hinge swingingly connecting the stop bar with the body, and a link swingingly connecting the actuating member with the stop bar, said handle being shiftable for moving one end of the actuating member away from the body and shifting the stop bar into engagement with a surface for holding a door, said handle and stop bar being shiftable toward and away from each other in stop bar retracting and engaging directions respectively.
3. In a door stop, a body, an actuating member associated therewith and adapted to swing away from said body, a handle swingingly connected with the actuating member, means swingingly connecting the handle actuating member with the body, a stop bar swingingly connected with the body, and means swingingly connecting the stop bar with the actuating member, said handle being movable for shifting one end of the actuating member and swinging the stop bar into locking position for holding a door against movement, said handle and stop bar being shiftable toward and away from each other in stop bar retracting and engaging directions respectively whereby space will be conserved.
