ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed March 51, 1957 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inwntob fVLchoias Sandor by m ttov neg/ W Patented July 5, 1938 ADVERTISING DEVICE Nicholas Sandor, Surbiton, England, assignor to I. S. M. Limited, London, England, a British company Application March 31, 1937, Serial No. 134,064 In Great Britain April 2, 1936 4 Claims.
This invention relates to advertising devices and more particularly to advertising devices in which the advertisements in the form of plates or cards are fed mechanically in succession to a position behind a viewing aperture in a cabinet and then pass beyond this aperture to be brought back again to the viewing aperture.
The invention has of the cabinet, and a reciprocatory carriage by which the plates or cards are elevated and by which also the cards to be viewed may be controlled in their downward movement.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the mechanism within a frame and without the cards or plates, Fig. 2 is a side view showing the mechanism and cards in the frame and Fig.3 a detail to enlarged scale, while Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing one of the plates or cards for use therewith.
Referring to the drawings, I denotes generally a framework disposed within or forming part of a suitable cabinet (not shown) which is provided with glass panels constituting a pair of viewing windows behind which plates or cards 2 containing advertising matter may be displayed. Within the framework are provided guide tracks for the cards 2, such tracks comprising at each side horizontal portions 3 located above the upper viewing window in the cabinet (not shown) along which horizontal portions the cards 2 may be pushed from back to front of the cabinet by succeeding cards or plates or by mechanism; vertical track portions 4 adjacent the front of the framework down which the cards 2 may travel into a position in front of a lower viewing window (not shown), inclined lower portions 5 down which the cards 2 may travel to the rear of the cabinet and rear upright vertical portions 6 in which the cards may again be raised to the horizontal portions 3 of the guide track.
For the purpose of elevating the card or plate 2 from the bottom of the guide tracks 5 to the horizontal tracks 3 there is provided a. reciprocating carriage.
a motor 1 which through reduction gearing 8 rotates a spindle 9 on which is mounted a double armed lever In one end of which is provided with a counter-balance weight M the other end being connected by a connecting rod |2 to the reciprocating carriage. The carriage is constituted by vertical members |3 at each side of the framework and spaced cross members M. The cross members 4 are fitted with brackets |5 freely embracing a bracing member H5 at the rear of the framework serving as a guide. The ends of the cross members l4 extend around the sides H of the framework to the front thereof and are formed at the front with rearwardly projecting lugs l8 which serve to control the cards in their downward movement in the guide tracks 4. The vertical members |3 of the carriage are provided with hook shaped recesses I9 serving to engage the supporting spindle 20 of a card 2 and raise it in the tracks 6 in the upward movement of such vertical members. The vertical members |3 are also provided with lugs 2| having an inclined face 22 for a purpose hereinafter explained. For co-operation with the recesses l9 and lugs 2| there are disposed on each side of the cabinet spring-pressed arms 23 which normally close the upper ends of the tracks 6 but are moved by the lugs 2| or the ends of the supporting spindles 2!] to permit a card to pass, the spring pressed arms 23 returning to close the tracks 6 again thus preventing a card raised from falling in the rear track 6 and ensuring the delivery of the card 2 elevated by the carriage to the horizontal portions 3 of the track.
The front ends of the horizontal guide tracks 3 are normally closed by means of pivoted guide bars 24 pivoted at 24a. and connected by a link 25. The guide bars are adapted to be raised by the upper edge of the lugs l8 engaging therewith or as shown with the connecting link 25 during the upward movement of the carriage.
In the position shown in Fig. 2 the carriage is at the lowest point in its travel and the recesses I9 in the vertical members |3 of the carriage have just engaged the ends of the supporting spindle 20 of the rearmost card 2 in the inclined portions of the guide tracks 5. Rotation of the spindle 9 by the electric motor 1 serves to rotate the double armed lever l0 and thus raise the carriage with the card 2 engaged by the recesses |9.
When the carriage is approaching the limit of its upward movement, that is, in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, the projecting lugs 2| or the ends of the rods 20 carrying the cards 2 force back the spring-pressed levers 23 to allow the passage of the spindle of the card 2 and after the carriage has raised the ends of the supporting spindle 2B of the cards 2 to the level of the horizontal portions of the guide track 3 the levers 23 close the vertical portions 6 of the guide track to prevent the card 2 from returning down the guide track. At the same time the pivoted guide lever 28 is raised by the edge of the lug l8 to permit the passage of the foremost card 2 in the horizontal track 3 into the vertical track 4.
When the carriage commences to descend from the position shown in chain dotted lines in Fig. 3 the inclined portions 22 of the lugs 2| serve to push forward the last card elevated and all the row of cards 2 in the horizontal portions 3 of the guide track so that the foremost card is free to pass to the vertical portion 4 of the guide track and fall into this portion. In this position the spindle of the card 2 shown in chain dotted lines in Fig. 3 is supported in its downward movement by the upper lugs I8 and the card is steadied in its downward movement by the lower pair of the lugs l8 leaving the card finally in front of the lower window with the spindle 2i] supporting the card 2 in the inclined portion 5 of the guide track. The rearmost card in this guide track is now engaged by the recesses IS in the vertical members 13 of the carriage on the next upward movement of the carriage.
By providing viewing apertures just below the horizontal portion 3 and below the inclined portion 5 of the track the foremost card lying in each of these tracks may be viewed.
It will be appreciated that with the construction described when the apparatus is in operation successive cards will be exposed for a time behind one viewing window while the preceding card is behind the other window.
In lieu of providing twoviewing windows one only may be provided.
The construction illustrated is eminently suitable for use for instance in the foyers of picture houses for successively displaying stills of scenes from a film.
While one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated obviously the details of construction may be varied. I
Thus instead of the cross members l4 embracing the stay !6 the vertical members l3 of the carriage may be in the form of rods passing through suitable guiding apertures.
In lieu of providing the counterbalance weight II at one end of the double armed lever Ill the weight may be attached to a chain or the like passing over a pulley at the top of the frame I, the other end of the chain being anchored to the movable carriage. The counterweight is allowed to reciprocate out of phase with the carriage in suitable vertical guides. I
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawings the motor is coupled directly to the reciprocating carriage but a clutch may be interposed between the motor and the carriage. Thus the motor may rotate an arm normally coupled to the arm provided to reciprocate the bridge by means of a spring ball catch, but adapted to be uncoupled with the motor still running in the event of the frame or carriage becoming jammed.
For the transfer of the cards from the front to the back of the cabinet atthe lower ends of the vertical guides in lieu of providing inclined guide tracks along which the cards descend by gravity I may provide horizontal tracks and lugs or projections on the reciprocating carriage adapted, at the commencement of the upward movement of the carriage, to move the cards along the lower horizontal portion of the track in much the same manner as described with reference to the horizontal tracks 3 at the upper end of the framework.
The whole framework may be mounted within a suitable cabinet by means of springs attached to each corner of the framework and anchored to the cabinet.
I claim:-
