9 Claims.
My present invention has for its object to produce a sturdy but relatively inexpensive fitting for connecting an electrical conductor and/r its protective covering, or two separate conductors to a ground pipe of relatively large size. The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out withparticularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description'taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a cross section on line I--I of Fig. 3 and represents a fitting installed on a pipe and with a conductor and its protective covering in position in the fitting. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to the water pipe and looking at'the end where the conductor and its protective covering enter the tting. Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, I is a body member or yoke which is of somewhat greater length than the diameter of the largest pipe on which it is to be installed. 2-2 represent U bolts having' threaded ends which pass through apertures'in the body member or yoke.l 3-3 are clamping tive covering to the yoke. 'I'hese clamping plates have apertures aligned with the apertures in yoke I and through which the U bolts extend. 5-5 are threaded nuts on the U bolts and which, when tightened, clamp the conductor and/or its protective covering to the fitting and also clamp the fitting on the pipe.l The portion of body member or yoke I lying between the clamping plates 3-3 is of channel formation as shown Vin Fig. 4. 'Inis formation permits the body member or .yoke to be formed with a seat for the pipe as shown at 'l and in fact the bottom of the channel may be cut entirely away as shown by the dotted line 8, the yoke still having sufiicient strength, because of the channel formation, to resist bending. The channel also serves to protect the conductor against mechanical injury or disturbance.
'I'he yoke, directly beneath the clamping platesl is formed into seats for the reception of the conductor and its protective covering the seat for the conductor being shown at 9 and that for the protective covering at I0 it being of, the same 'formation as seat I2. The plate 3 is invertible and one side is formed with a seat II for the conductor and the other side with a seat I2 for the conductor covering. In Flg. 2 the plate is shown clamping the conductor covering while in Fig. 4 itis shown clamping the conductor.
Since U bolts suitable for any size of pipe are readily obtainable and inexpensive and since the only change necessary in the fitting to adapt it to pipes of practically any size is to increase the length of the yoke I thisdesign is particularly advantageous for a fitting intended for the larger sizes of pipe. The construction of the clamps for the conductor and its coveringwhich provides a clamping bolt at each side of the clamped member, adds greatly to the effectiveness of the clamp. v
While the drawing shows a conductor with a protective covering, it will be clearly seen that a conductor without any protective coveri g may be attached with equal facility the co ductor y itself being preferably clamped under both clamping plates or each plate may clamp a separate conductor. Y
While I have illustrated and described with particular-ity only a single preferredform of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described but, intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
