Description

ATTORNEYS.
Patented June 28, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relatesto an unhairing roll for use in connection with unhairing machines such as employed for removing hair from hides used in the tanning industry.
An object of the invention is to provide a durable roll having fiexiblespirally arranged blades joined to the roll ina new and novel manner, the said blades being so pitched as to discard the removed hair past the two ends of the roll.v
A further object is 'to provide an unhairing roll which is'of increased 'efliciency and has no tendency to injure the hide under treatment.
.With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it beingunderstood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a roll embodying the present improvements, portions of the shaft being broken away.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section through the roll.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates the shaft of an unhairing machine on which is mounted a roll or cylinder 2 formed of cast iron or other suitable material in the outer or peripheral portion of which are provided spiral grooves 3 formed in opposed series extending inwardly from the respective ends of the rolls, the grooves of the .two series merging adjacent to the center of the roll and the grooves of each series being pitched oppositely to those of the opposed series.
Seated in each groove is a blade 4 preferably of steel which is extended throughout the length of the groove and follows the contour thereof,
each blade being fastened securely in'the groove by a caulking strip 5 preferably of steel.
That portion of each blade 4 which is located outside of the groove 3 is seated within and vulcanized or otherwise joined to a rib 6 formed of rubber and as these ribs are of the same length,
as the blades and grooves, they will abut adjacent to the center of the roll as shown, for example, at 1 in Figure 1. The advancing faces of the ribs are inclined as indicated at 8 so as thus to converge outwardly toward the opposite or followj aredisposed substantially radially relative to the ing faces of the ribs which, as indicated at 9,
side of the hide to be treated being positioned Where the surface thereof will be touched by the outer edge portions of the ribs as the cylinder rotates. As these ribs are formed of rubber they will frictionally engage the hair and beat it off of the hide. As the opposed series of ribs are oppositely positioned, said ribs can, during the rotation of the cylinder, direct the loosened hair toward the ends of the cylinder or roll so that it will thus be quickly disposedof and not remain where it will clog or otherwise interfere with the proper functioning of the device.
Not only are the rubber ribs vulcanized to the blades 4 but they are also vulcanized to the surface of the cylinder. I
It is to be understood that the ribs of each series are equally spaced apart and it has been found in practice that the angle of the advancing surface of each rib'should be pitched approximately thirty degrees to produce the most desirable results.
While it is preferred to use flexible rubberin the construction of the ribs, it is to be understood that hard rubber may be used under some conditions. I
What is claimed is:
1. An unhairing roll including a cylinder having grooves in the periphery thereof, blades anchored in the grooves and projecting from the cylinder, and rubber ribs vulcanized on the blades and cylinder.
2. An unhairing roll including a cylinder having opposed series of grooves in the periphery thereof, the grooves of each series being pitched oppositely to the grooves of the opposed series and the grooves of the said series merging adjacent to the center of the cylinder, blades seated within the respective grooves and extending throughout the length thereof, means for anchoring the blades in the grooves, and resilient ribs vulcanized on the blades and on the face of the cylinder, said ribs following the contours of the grooves and abutting adjacent to the center of the roll.
3. An unhairing roll including a cylinder having opposed series of grooves in the periphery thereof and extending from the respective ends of the cylinder to points adjacent the center thereof, the grooves of each series being pitched oppositely to the grooves of the opposed series and merging at points adjacent to the center of the cylinder, blades seated within the respective grooves and projecting from the cylinder, means for anchoring the blades in the cylinder, each of said blades being extended throughout the length of the groove in which it is seated, and a rubber rib vulcanized on each blade and upon the cylinder, said ribs following the contours of the grooves and having inclined advancing faces.
