This invention relates to improvements in dishes or the like.
One object of this invention is to provide a dish of novel and attractive appearance by forming the border of the dish with a series of pentagonal panels either by themselves or in combination with rectangular panels.
With the above and otherobjects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features in the said disclosure which are novel over the' prior art.
In the accompanying drawings, in which certain ways of carrying out the invention are shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1 is a plan view illustrating a dish made in accordance with one embodiment of the inven tion; f
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modied form of dish;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a still further modied form of dish;
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional View on line 6--6 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is still another modified form of dish;
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view on line 8-8 of Fig. 7; and
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the
dish or plate 20 has a center portion 2l and an outwardly and upwardly sloping border or border rim 22 formed of ten plane pentagonal panels 23, although any desired number of pentagonal panels may be used to form the border of a dish.
The form of dish 24 shown in Figs. 3 and 4 has a center portion 25 and a border 26 formed of alternate plane pentagonal panels 23 and plane rectangular panels 21, the total number of panels in the particular dish illustrated being ten.
The dish 28 illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 has a center portion 29 surrounded by a border 3U formed of six pentagonal panels 23.
The dish 3l illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 has a center portion 32 surrounded by a border 33 formed of three pentagonal panels 23 alternated with three rectangular panels 21.
The dish 34 illustrated in Fig. 9 has a pentagonal-shaped center portion 35 surrounded by a border 36 having ve pentagonal panels 23.
In the form of dish 4| illustrated in Fig. 11, the center portion 42 is surrounded by a border 43 having two end groups or pairs 44 of pentagonal panels 23 and four single pentagonal panels 23, the said pairs of panels and single panels being separated from one another by rectangular panels 21.
In the form of dish 45 illustrated in Fig. l2, the center portion 46 is surrounded by a border 41 having two end groups 48 of three pentagonal panels 23 and two single pentagonal panels 23, the said groups of panels and single panels being separated from one another by rectangular panels 21.
The form of dish 49 illustrated in Fig. 13 has a center portion 50 surrounded by a border 5| formed of two end groups 52 of three pentagonal panels 23 and four'single pentagonal panels 23, the said groups and single panels being separated from one another by rectangular panels 21.
The dish 53 illustrated in Fig. 14 has a center portion 54 surrounded by a border 55 having two opposite end groups 56 of three pentagonal panels 23 and twoside groups 51 of twoV pentagonal panels 23, with rectangular panels 21 separating all of the groups.
The dish 58 illustrated in Fig. 15`has a center portion 59 surrounded by a border 60 having two 'end groups 6l of four pentagonal panels 23, each group being separated by a rectangular panel 21.
The dish 62 illustrated in Fig. 16 has a center portion 63 surrounded by a border 64 having two end groups 65 of four pentagonal panels 23 and two single pentagonal panels 23, the groups and single panels being separated from one another by rectangular panels 21.
In the dish 66 illustrated in Fig. 17, the center portion 61 is surrounded by a border 68 formed of two end groups 69 of ve pentagonal panels 23, each group being separated by a rectangular panel 21.
The dishes or the like to which the present invention relates may, if desired, be made of moulded material such as china or the like, as in Figs. 1 and 2. Suitable material for making the dishes includes paper, cardboard, metal, bakelite, urea formaldehyde, china, glass, etc. The pentagonal panels are preferably in the form of regular plane pentagons where feasible, as in cases where less than ten plane pentagons are employed in making the border of a dish. Where ten or more plane pentagons are used, the base angles of the plane pentagons are made somewhat smaller than in the case of a true' regular plane pentagon in order that the border-rim of the dish shall have an upward slope. The rectangular panels are preferably square.
By referring to Figs. l to 4 inclusive, it lwill be observed that although the form of invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 has the same number of border panels as that illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the flare or upward-outward slope of the border is less in Fig. 2 than it is in Fig. 4. This is due to the fact that the substitution of the rectangular panels 2l in place of corresponding pentagonal panels has a tendency to raise r give a greater slope to the border.
By referring to Figs. 5 and 6, it will be seen that by making the border of six pentagonal panels instead of the ten illustrated in the dish shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that the upward slope of the panels is greater than in the dish of Figs. 1 and 2. In other words, as the pentagonal panels which form the border are reduced in number, the border has a greater upward slope. And by in*- creasing the number of pentagonal panels, the slope is reduced.
By substituting the rectangular panels in the dish of Figs. 7 and 8 for three of the pentagonal panels of the dish of Figs. 5 and 6, it will be noted that the effect of the substitution of the rectangular panels in place of the pentagonal panels is to increase the upward slope of the border, as will be seen by comparing Figs. 6 and 8.
Figs. 1, 2, 5, 6 and 9 illustrate three different dishes having -borders formed exclusively of pentagonal panels-the first instance, ten panels, the second instance, six, and the third instance, five. But it will be appreciated that any other desired number of panels may be used. Likewise, Figs. 3, 4, '7 and 8 illustrate two different dishes, the border of each being formed of alternate pen-- tagonal and rectangular panels. In one instance, a total of ten panels is used, and in the other, a total of six panels is used, although, of course, any greater or less even number of panels may be used, as desired.
Figs. l0 to 17 inclusive illustrate a few of the many other arrangements of border panels that may be used.
The invention may be carried out in other specificV ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
