Application December 2, 19am, Serial No. 1134312 3 Claims. My invention relates to fountain pens for des LISB.
The object of my invention is to provide a fountain pen that is of the self filler type, at a low cost.
A further object is to provide a fountain pen in which a piston is used to fill-the reservoir of the pen and to form the interior of the reservoir to provide a true cylindrical chamber in which the piston is movable, and to reduce the diameter of the cylinder at its rear end to form an abutment to prevent the removal of the piston from the rear end of the chamber.
A further object is to provide a construction in which the rear end of. the piston will be slightly compressed when it reaches the said abutment, to insure a perfectly tight joint between the piston and inner surface of the chamber, regardless of the loose fitting of the piston in said chamber forming the reservoir of the pen.
A further object is to provide a fountain pen in which 'no separate pen section is required and which is free from threaded joints; also a barrel which is transparent to expose'the ink in the reservoir to view.
Referring to the drawing which forms a part of this specification;
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view thru the fountain pen disclosing my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal exterior view of the piston and piston-rod.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsectional view of the piston, shown on an enlarged scale. v
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view thru the cork ring portion of the piston.
i0 indicates the barrel of the pen which is preferably made of transparent or translucent material, and ill is the reservoir formed therein, and is formed with a smooth cylindrical inner wall II which extends from the front end to the .point i2 at which place the diameter of the cylinder is slightly reduced to form a tapering abutment into which the cork enters a short distance and is compressed to form a tight joint. i
The piston-rod i3 is attached to the rear end of the piston construction which comprises a' The pen-holder portion l3, referred to as the piston-rod, may be made hollow by the blowing method of manufacture well known to this art, to make the holder as a whole 'very light in weight, and this portion may be made interchangeable with others of like or different form and color, etc. to match when used in a desk-set.
The rear end of the barrel I0 is also tapered at its rear end as illustrated at I 9, and at its front end as illustrated at 20.
The feed-plug 2| and pen 23 is held in the end of the barrel as shown.
The pen is assembled by first inserting the piston-rod. and piston carried thereby, into the front end of the barrel, and thereafter inserting the pen-plug and pen in the open end thereof, as shown.
The pen is filled by a ton in its movement from the front end of the cylinder or ink chamber, to its rear end, after first immersing the front'end into the ink, as will be readily understood. 7
Having thus described my invention 1 claim a new:
- 1. In a fountain pen, a barrel having a bore cylindrical for a portion of its length and merging at one end into a tapered bore portion, a.
feed plug and pen at the other end of the barrel, 9. piston rod slidable in the bore and proiecting outwardly. of the tapered end of the barrel, and a compressible cylindrical piston'on the inner end of the piston rod adapted to be,
pressible piston comprising'a cork bodyhaving a coating of soft rubber impregnated with graphite.
3. In a fountain pen, a barrel having a bore ing at one end into a tapered bore portion, a feed plug and pen at the other end of the barrel, a piston rod slidable in .the bore and projecting outwardiyof the tapered endof thebarrel, and a cylindricahpiston on the innerend of the piston rod adapted to be moved into frictional engagement with the tapered portion of the barrel bore.
