BUMPERI I Filed April 5, 1957 Patented May 31, 1938 UNITED STATES rArET OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to beds and includes among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved bumper.
While the bumper may be applied to beds in general, it is particularly adapted to hospital beds. In hospitals the beds are frequently grouped in large numbers in a single room, and the beds are moved from place to place, which frequently bumps one bed against another, thereby marring the finish on the bed. Such beds are usually of metallic construction provided with an enamel finish, and after a period of use the finish becomes marred. An object of my invention is to provide a bumper designed to be easily attached to beds of conventional design and in which the bumper is so located as to protect the finish on the bed incident to moving the bed against other beds.
Another object is to provide a bumper designed to embrace two bed members arranged in rightangular relation in such a manner as to eifectively restrain the bumper from relative displacement with respect to the members. a
A further-object is to provide a bumper shaped to facilitate its attachment to the bed members and in which novel means is employed for keying the bumper in connected relation with the bed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bed illustrating my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view taken from the position indicated by line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment selected to illustrate my invention I make use of a bed l0 including the usual legs I 2 and horizontal member [4 interconnecting the legs. VVlule only one end of the bed It] is illustrated, both legs l2 at the head and foot of the bed are provided with bumpers I6. These bumpers are located at the connection between the horizontal member l4 and the legs I2.
Specifically, the bumper It comprises a sleeve l8 of resilient material such as rubber, which sleeve has an opening 20 of such diameter as to fit snugly about the leg l2. The sleeve includes an opening 22 in its wall, which opening has its axis arranged at right angles to the axis of the opening 20 and is of such diameter as to fit snugly about the horizontal member l4. sleeve is severed vertically at 24, which line of .the bed be used without the bumper.
severance is located centrally of the opening 22. Because of the slotted wall of the sleeve, the bumper may be connected with the bed by merely opening up the sleeve and pressing it over the leg I?! and aligning the sleeve to position the 5' horizontal member M within the opening 22.
In Fig. 4, I illustrate the sleeve I8 as being provided with two openings 26 located on opposite sides of the line of severance 24 and in parallel relation therewith. A groove 28 is formed in the upper end of the sleeve for housing the bight 30 of a U-shaped fastening clip 32 having its legs 34 positioned within the openings 26. Transverse openings 36 are provided in the lower'ends of the legs 34 for the reception of cotter pins 38. I recess the sleeve H8 at 40 to facilitate insertion of the pins 38 with the ends of the legs 34 terminating short of the bottom end of the sleeve. Because of the recesses 40, the pins 38 .are housed within the contour of the sleeve and are not visible with the bumper attached to the bed. The clip 32 has its legs 34 so spaced as to hold the slotted ends of the sleeve H3 in slight pressure relation.
According 'to my invention, the bumper is effectively restrained from relative shifting longitudinally of the leg l2 because of its embracing relation with the horizontal member l4. The wall'of the sleeve is sufiiciently thick to constitute an efiective bumper, and the location of the bumper opposite the ends of the horizontal member l4 transmits forces to the member, thus protecting the legs against bending. The bumpers protect the finish on the bed. The sleeve I8 is sufiiciently thick to perform a bumping action with respect to the horizontal member M of an adjacent bed in addition to protecting the finish on the legs l2. In a large institution'employing many beds, the beds are standardized so that the bumpers will be accurately positioned when attached to the bed'according to Fig. 1. Mere. connection of the bumper with the bed determines its proper location. In Fig. 4, it Will be noted that the openings 26 are so positioned as to leave a small amount of material between the open ings and the opening 22. In this way, I prevent contact between theclip 32 and the horizontal member l4 so as not to impair its finish should Without further elaboration, the foregoing will i so fully explain my invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of serv- I claim: V 1.
