This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a process and apparatus for delivering paper to printing presses etc. and has for its object to provide a new and improved process and apparatus of this description.
Ihe invention has as a further object to provide a process and apparatus by means of which a plurality of rolls of paper may be supported in position so that the paper may be delivered to the press from one roll and when this roll is about expired, the other roll may be rotated and brought up to speed by the same mechanism used in delivering the paper from the first roll to the press.
The invention has as a further object to provide a process and apparatus by means of which the new roll which is to be connected to the web of the expiring roll, may be given a plurality of revolutions by the same mechanism used in delivering the paper to the press so that it may be brought to a high speed and the web of the new roll then connected to the web of the expiring roll while the press is running at a high speed.
The invention has other objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a. side elevation showing one form of device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the device shown in Fig. 1 with parts broken away.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the position of the rolls when the new roll is being brought up to the desired speed.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic View showing the position of the rolls when the web of the new roll is being connected to the web of the 01d roll.
Fig. 5 is a View showing a modified construction, showing a three roll reel and the position of the new roll while being brought up to speed.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the position of the rolls of Fig. 5 when the new roll is being connected to the web of the expiring roll.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
In the drawings I have illustrated the invention as being used to deliver paper from rolls to printing presses, tubing machines or any other suitable device where such paper can be used.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4, I have shown a means for supporting the plurality of rolls of paper 1 and 2. These rolls are rotatably supported between arms 3 and 4 and the arms 3 and 4 are movably mounted as, for example, by
being connected with a. shaft 5. This shaft may be rotated in any desired manner as by means of the motor 6 connected by gears I and 8 and worm 9 and a worm gear Ill connected with the shaft 5. Mounted in proximity to the roll sup- 5 porting mechanism are a series of belts ll. These belts pass around direction changing devices l2 and are provided with some means for keeping them taut and for keeping them in contact with the roll of paper as it decreases in size. 10 A simple means for this purpose may consist of a weight 14 connected with one of the direction changing pulleys l2, l3. If these belts are to be driven, they pass about the driving pulleys l5 connected with the shaft iii which shaft is 15 connected to any suitable driving mechanism. As herein shown the shaft is provided with a gear I! which engages a gear IE on a shaft l9 which shaft is driven by a belt connected with any suitable driving mechanism. The roll 20 of paper I from which paper is being delivered, is moved into contact with the belts and the web 2| of this paper passes to the press or other machine, the machine pulling the paper and the belts usually acting as retarding devices, to secure the proper tension on the paper. If the belts are driven in order to have them act as retarding devices, they are driven at a speed less than that of the web 2|. The adhesive material is placed on the end of the web of the new roll, the adhesive material being located between the points where the belts engage the new roll as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the new roll is brought into contact with the belts, the belts do not touch the adhesive material. In Fig. 6, I have shown in dotted lines a roll 2a on the reel. When this roll is in position and the roll 2 is about to be exhausted, the roll 2a is moved into contact with the belt ll so as to be brought up to speed.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
When the device is in use and the paper is being delivered from roll I, this roll is in contact with the belts. Adhesive material is placed on the end of the web of the new roll between the belts so that the belts do not engage it. This adhesive material is shown at 22, Fig. 52. When roll I, that is, the roll from which paper is being delivered, is about exhausted, the roll supporting device is moved backward so as to bring roll 2, the new roll, into contact with the belts as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be noted that this new roll contacts With the belts at a point where there is no web of paper from the expiring roll and hence the new roll can be held in contact with the belts as long as desired so as to insure it being set into rotation and brought up to the desired speed. During this time the web from the expiring roll is being pulled by the press or other device to which the paper is being delivered. When the new roll has been brought to the desired speed, and it may be rotated any number of times necessary for this purpose, the roll supporting device is again moved forward until the rotating new roll is brought into contact with the web running from the expired roll and pressed against the belts, as shown in Fig. 4.
The web from the expiring roll then makes contact with the adhesive material 22 and the web of the new roll is thereby connected with the web of the expiring roll and the feed changed to the new roll. It will be seen that by means of this device the new roll is brought up to speed by contact with the belt free from the web of the expiring roll and when the proper speed is attained, this new roll is then moved into contact with the web of the expiring roll and its web connected therewith so as to change the feed from the expiring roll to the new roll while the parts are running at high speed.
I claim:
1. An apparatus for making high speed pasters comprising a movable roll support for supporting two rolls of paper, an expiring roll and a second roll, a belt adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered, means for operating said belt so as to move it at the desired speed, means for moving the roll support in one direction so as to bring said second roll into contact with said belt at a point where the belt is free from the Web of the expiring roll and while the paper is being delivered from said expiring roll, the engagement between the belt and the second roll causing said second roll to be rotated at the desired speed and for moving said roll support in the opposite direction so as to bring the revolving second roll into contact with the web of paper being delivered from the expiring roll so that the end of the web of the second roll to which adhesive has been applied, is pressed against and connected to the web of the expiring roll while the apparatus to which the paper is being delivered is running at high speed.
2. An apparatus for making high speed pasters comprising a movable roll support for supporting two rolls of paper, an expiring roll and a second roll, a belt adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered, means for operating said belt so as to move it at the desired speed, means for moving the roll support in one direction so as to bring the said second roll having adhesive on the end of its web located at one side of said belt, into contact with said belt at a point where the belt is free from the web of the expiring roll and while the paper is being delivered from' the expiring roll, the engagement between the belt and the second roll being at points free from adhesive and causing said second roll to be rotated at the desired speed and for moving said roll support in the opposite direction so as to bring the revolving second roll into contact with the web of paper being delivered from the expiring roll so that the adhesive end of the web of the second roll is pressed against and connected to the web of the expiring roll while the apparatus to which the paper is being delivered is running at high speed.
3. An apparatus for making high speed pasters comprising a supporting device for two rolls of paper, an expiring roll and a second roll, a moving belt adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered, means for bringing the new roll into contact with said belt at a point where the belt is free from the web of the expiring roll so as to utilize said belt to cause the second roll to be rotated at the desired speed and for moving said second roll after it has been set into motion by said belt, out of contact with said belt and into contact with the web of paper being delivered from the expiring roll so that the end of the web of the second roll to which adhesive has been applied, is pressed against and connected to the web of the expiring roll while the apparatus to which the paper is being delivered is running at a high speed.
4. A process of making high speed pasters which consists in movably mounting two rolls of paper, an expiring roll and a second roll and providing means to assist in delivering the paper from the-expiring roll to the device moving the second roll in one direction to a position where it is out of engagement with the web of paper being delivered to the press and while said second roll is out of engagement with said Web rotating said second roll so as to bring the second roll up to the desired speed and then moving the second roll after it has been rotated to the desired speed and which has adhesive on the end of its web, in the opposite direction and into contact with the web on the expiring roll so as to connect the webs of the two rolls together and change the delivery from the expiring roll to the second roll. An apparatus for making high speed pasters, comprising a supporting device for a plurality of rolls of paper, one the expiring roll and another a new roll,"a belt adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered and while it is being delivered, means for moving said supporting device to move the expiring roll out of contact with said running belt and the new roll into contact with said running belt at a point where the said belt is free from the web of the expiring roll so as to utilize the same belt to cause the second roll to be rotated at substantially the 'speed of the web of the expiring roll, the end of the web of the new roll having adhesivethereon at one side of the line of travel of said belt, the adhesive end of the web of the new roll, after the new roll has been brought up to speed, being brought into contact with the web of the expiring roll so as to connect them together,
6. The process of making high speed pasters which consists in movably mounting two rolls of paper, an expiring roll and a new roll, and providing movable means for engaging the expiring roll while the web is being delivered to the device using the paper, moving the expiring roll out of contact with said movable means and while the expiring roll is out of contact with said movable means, utilizing this same movable means at a point free from the web of the expiring roll for rotating a new roll and bringing it up to substantially the speed of the web of the expiring roll, and moving the new roll, after adhesive has been applied to the end of the web of said new roll at one side of said movable means and it has been set into rotation, into contact with the Web running from the expiring roll; and pressing the two webs together so as to connect them and change the delivery from the expiring roll to the new roll.

An apparatus for making high speed pasters, comprising a supporting device for a plurality of rolls of paper, one the expiring roll and another a new roll, a plurality of separated running belts adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered and while it is being delivered, means for moving said supporting device to move the expiring roll out of contact with said belts and the new roll into contact with said running belts at points where the said belts are free from the web of the expiring r011 so as to utilize the same belts to cause the second roll to be rotated at substantially the speed of the web of the expiring roll, and to move the new roll into contact with the web of the expiring roll, the end of the web of the new roll having adhesive thereon between said belts, the adhesive end of the web of the new roll, after the new roll has been brought up to speed, being brought into contact with the web of the expiring roll so as to connect them together.
8. An apparatus for making high speed pasters, comprising a supporting device for a plurality of rolls of paper, one the expiring roll and another a new roll, a plurality of separated running belts adapted to engage the expiring roll from which the paper is being delivered and while it is being delivered, said belts being automatically adjustable so as to follow up the roll as it becomes smaller by the delivery of paper therefrom, means for moving said supporting device to move the expiring roll out of contact with said belts and the new roll into contact with said running belts at points where the said belts are free from the web of the expiring roll so as to utilize the same belts to cause the second roll to be rotated at substantially the speed of the web of the expiring roll, the end of the web of the new roll having adhesive thereon between said belts, the adhesive end of the web of the new roll, after the new roll has been brought up to speed, being brought into contact with the web of the expiring roll so as to connect them together.
9. An apparatus for making high speed pasters comprising a support for a new roll of paper and an expiring roll, a movable driving device for engaging the expiring roll of paper from which the web is being delivered to the device using the paper, an actuating device for moving the support to bring the new roll into contact with the same movable driving device at a point free from the web of the expiring roll for rotating the new roll and bringing it up to the desired speed and for moving the new roll while in rotation into contact with the web of the expiring roll.
