Application January 4, 1938, Serial No. 183,356
4 Claims.
tion for creating a sound simulating an owl call the box whereby the rotation of the latter will be in one direction and then in a reverse direction and may be rotated at different rates of speed, the box being provided with openings and lips arr anged in accordance with the present invention to produce the sound simulating an owls cry or call.
With vention these and other objects in view, this inconsists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional View illustrating a toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
meral I indicates a sound box constructed from any material suitable for the purpose and consists of an annular wall 2 and side walls 3.
The side walls 3 have cord receiving openings 4 arranged substantially centrally thereof. Ends of cords 5 are passed through the openings 4' and tied in knots on the inside of the box. The ends of the cords being fastened to the box as described pro vide in each cord a pair of runs thereto and connected with said cords are finger pieces 6. The cords are wound upon themselves by holding the finger pieces 6 and rotating the sound box in the arc of a circle. After the cords have been wound, as shown in Figure 1, the box may be caused to rotate first in one direction and then in the opposite direction by pulling on the finger pieces away from each other and gradually permitting other.
the finger pieces to move towards each The ends of the cords being knotted within the sound box will bring about closing of the openings 4 when the cords are drawn taut during the operation of the toy to prevent the entrance of air into the box by way of said openings 4.
In order to facilitate the tying of the ends of the cords in knots within the box the latter is constructed of companion sections which may be separated at the periphery of the box and when said sections are assembled they tightly fit each other to prevent entrance of air into the box where said sections join.
The side walls of the box are provided with sound producing openings 1 located in close proximity to the periphery of the box and it is preferable that the openings of each side wall 3 be oppositely disposed to each other and the openings of one of the side walls being arranged out of alignment with the openings of the other side wall. The walls 3 inwardly of said openings and in the direction of the axis of rotation of the box are offset outwardly to form substantially cup-shaped lips or flanges 8. The outer edges of the flanges form a portion of the walls of the sound openings. The lips or flanges cooperate with the sound openings in producing a sound during the rotation of the sound box which simulates a sound of an owl, that is, the sound produced will have variable qualities. It has been discovered by a series of experiments that this toy emits a basic or fundamental note when revolving slowly. As the speed of the toy is increased said toy successively emits, at changing volumes or amplitudes, the various harmonic tones or over-tones of the fundamental note, the net effect being a close simulation of the cry of an owl. This toy due to the peculiar sound made thereby will be amusing both to adults and children.
What is claimed is:
1. A toy comprising a sound box, operating elements connected to said box for rotating the latter at variable speeds, said box having sound openings, and rigid means on said box and cooperating with the openings during the rotation of said box at variable speeds to produce a sound having a fixed basic note with over-tones which change with the speed of rotation.
2. A toy comprising a sound box including an annular wall and opposed side walls provided with sound openings located in close proximity to said annular wall, operating elements which rotate the box at variable speeds connected to" formed on said side walls and including edges of the sound openings to cooperate with the latter in producing a sound having a fixed basic note with over-tones which change with the speed of rotation.
3. A toy comprising a sound box including an annular wall and opposed side walls provided with sound openings located in close proximity to said annular wall, operating elements which rotate the box at variable speeds connected to said side walls adjacent to the axis of rotation of the box and including finger pieces, flanges formed on the side walls and extending outwardly therefrom with edges thereof forming portions of the walls of the sound openings and cooperating with the THELMA J. BELL.
