3 which coloring matter, such as black or tan polish may be easily and quickly applied to the sides and back of the heel and to the edges and exposed upper edge portions of the sole of a shoe, without liability of the coloring material discoloring or 10 smearing the upper portion of the shoe or boot.

Another object of my invention is the provision of novel guarding means on a brush or dauber, adapted for applying coloring material to a shoe sole, which can be readily moved from an oper- 15 ative guarding position to one which will permit of the insertion of the bristles of the brush or dauber into the coloring material without contacting the guarding means with such material.

Still another object of my invention is the pro- 20 vision of a novel device of the kind described which permits easy access of the bristles of the brush to the concave edge portions of the sole.

A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for releasably reliably holding the guarding means in its operative position.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the kind described, which is simple, cheap to make, strong, durable, not likely to get out of order, and which is efficient in its opera- 30 tion.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In each of the forms of my invention shown in the drawing, the brush has the usual back I having a handle 2, and bristles 3 extending from one side of the back, the outer endsof the bristles forming a longitudinal convex arc, whereby the bristles may be easily applied to concave edge portions of the sole of a shoe or boot.

In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, there is provided a guard member the body 4 of which is, preferably, of sheet metal, having at one end two projecting flanges 5 which are disposed at opposite sides of the handle 2 to which they are pivoted by a transverse pin 6. This pivotal connection enables the body 4 to be swung from its operative position flatwise against the rear side of the back I, whereby the bristle end of the brush may be dipped into coloring material, such as black or tan polish, without dipping therein the guard member.

The other end of the guard body I has extending from it at its opposite edges respectively two longitudinal flanges 1 and 8, which in the operative position, shown in Figs. 1 and 4 are respectively at opposite sides of the back I The flange 1, in the operative position, extends outwardly a short distance from the outer ends of the bristles 3, and its outer edge is convexly arcuate and substantially parallel with the are of the outer ends of the bristles 3. The bristles 3 extend outwardly beyond the outer edge of the flange 8.

For releasably holding the guard member in its operative position, the body 4 between theflanges 'I and 8 has through it a longitudinal slot 9 through which is adapted to extend a locking member I comprising, as shown, a screw II revolubly fitted in the back I and having at its outer end an eye I2.

When the screw eye I2 is turned to the longitudinal position shown in Fig. 2, it can pass through the slot 9, thereby permitting the guard to swing to and from the operative position, shown in Fig. 1. After the guard is swung into the position shown in Fig. l, and the screw eye I2 is turned to the transverse position, shown in Fig. 1, the screw eye will hold the guard member in the operative position, thereby relieving the operator of this duty.

In the use of the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the screw eye I 2 is turned to the release position, shown in Fig. 2, and the brush has its bristle end inserted into the coloring material. The

guard member 4 is then swung to the operative position, shown in Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 6, and the brush is employed to apply the coloring material which is on the bristles 3, to the edge and upper exposed edge portion of the shoe sole, the arouate outer portions of the bristles 3 and the flange I permitting the application of the coloring material easily to the concave edge portions of the sole. The flange I, during such application, and during the application of the coloring material to the upper side of the exposed edge portion of the sole, being disposed next to the shoe upper portion, thus prevents the coloring material which is on the bristles 3 from contacting with and smearing such upper portion.

By having the bristles 3 extending outwardly a substantial distance from the outer edge of the flange 8, the coloring material can be quickly and easily applied to the sides and back of the heel of the shoe, by tipping the brush downwardly laterally and brushing downwardly with the bristles.

The forms shown in Figs. 1 and 5 differ only in the length of the bristles 3 with respect to the width of the wider flange I, the bristles in the form shown in Fig. 1 being slightly at the inner side of the arcuate edge of the flange I, while in the form shown in Fig. 5, the bristles 3 extend substantially to the arcuate edge of the flange I. The mode of operation of the two forms is the same.

In the forms shown in Figs. 7 to 12 inclusive, the guard member comprises a sheet metal body I3, corresponding in function to the body 4 of Fig. 1, and which is longitudinally slidable on the rear side of the back I of the brush and is provided with a longitudinal slot I4 through which extends a screw I5 which is revolubly fitted in the handle 2 of the brush. The screw I5 has an eye I6, which holds the body I3 to the back and also limits its longitudinal range of movement. By turning the screw eye in the proper direction, it may be made to hold the body I3 from longitudinal accidental movement.

One end of the body I3 is provided at one side with two oppositely disposed flanges II which embrace opposite sides of the brush handle 2, and which serve as finger holds for longitudinally sliding the body I3 to and from its operative position. The other end portion of the body I3 is provided at its longitudinal edges with two oppositely disposed flanges I 8 and I9, respectively corresponding in function to the flanges 'I and 8 of the form shown in Fi 1. In both forms, shown in Figs. 7' and 11, the bristles 3 project outwardly beyond the outer longitudinal edge of the flange I9.

In the form shown in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the flange I8 extends outwardly slightly beyond the outer ends of the bristles 3 and has its longitudinal outer edge convexly curved substantially parallel to the curve of the outer ends of the bristles 3. In the form shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the bristles 3 extend outwardly substantially even with the outer curved edge of the flange I8. In all other respects, the forms shown in Figs. 7 to 12 are alike.

The flanges I8 and I9 are both longitudinally inwardly creased at 20 so as to slidably engage the bristle side of the body I3 to hold that end portion of the guard from rearward movement away from the back I.

In the operation of the forms shown in Figs. 7 to 12, the guard member is slid on the brush back to the position shown in Fig. 8 in which the guard will clear the bristle end of the brush, thus permitting such end to be inserted into the coloring material without having the latter get onto the guard.

After dipping the brush, the guard member is slid to its operative position, shown in Figs. 7 and 11, following which the operation of applying the coloring material to the sole and heel of a shoe corresponds to that described with reference to the other forms of the invention.

To prevent the coloring material getting onto the outer side of the body I3 and flanges I8 and I9, when the guard member is slid to its operative position, after dipping the brush, the outer ends of the flanges I8 and I9 and body I3 are outwardly flared as indicated at 2|. This flaring of the parts permits the coloring material to enter between the flanges I8 and I9, as the guard member is slipped to its operative position.

The guard member may be removed from the brush as follows:turn the screw eye I6 to a position parallel with the slot I4, bend the end portion of the body I3 having the flanges I'I rearwardly from the brush handle 2 to a position such that the body I3 will clear the outer end of the eye I6, and then slide the guard member 011' from the outer or bristle end of the brush back I.

The guard member may be replaced on the brush by reversing the operation just described.

Other modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim is:-

1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a brush having a back and bristles extending from one side thereof, of a member engaging said back and having a slot and a flange and movable to and from an operative position in which said flange will extend from said back at one side of and adjacent to the outer ends of said bristles, and a locking member mounted on said back and adapted to be extended through said slot and movable in said slot to two positions in one of which it will engage and hold said first named member against said back, and when in the other position being adapted to pass through said slot and release said first named member.

2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a brush having a back and bristles extending from one side thereof, of a member pivoted to said back and having a slot and a flange and adapted to be swung to and from an operative position in which said flange will extend from said back at one side of and adjacent to the outer ends of said bristles, and a locking member mounted on said back and adapted to be extended through said slot and movable in said slot to two positions in one of which it will engage and hold said first named member against said back in said operative position, and when in the other position being adapted to pass through said slot and permit said first named member to be swung from said operative position.

In a device of the kind described, the combination with a brush having a back and bristles extending from one side thereof, of a member engaging said back and having a longitudinal slot and a flange and adapted to he slid longitudinally to and from an operative position in which said flange will extend from said back at one side of and adjacent to the outer ends of said bristles, and a locking member mounted on said back and adapted to be extended through said slot and movable in said slot to two positions in one of which it will engage and hold said first named member against said back and when in the other position being adapted to pass through said slot and permit said first named member to be moved from said back.

4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a brush having a back and bristles extending from one side at one end portion thereof, of a member longitudinally slidably engaging said back and having a U-shaped channel portion open at its ends and one side and having its two longitudinal flanges of different widths and oppositely disposed at opposite sides respectively of said back, said member being slidable lengthwise on and supported by said back, from
