Description
F. CHATFIELD May 3, 193.8..y
GARMENT Filed Feb, 4, 1955 INVENTOF? FRI-4N LJN CHAT/VELO ayt/gg, wfl' ATTORNEYS Patented May 3, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i I 2,1'16e40V d NY f4 (ySlARll/IEN'I"` Franklin '(Jlfx'atfielrl,` Minneapolis, Minn., assigner, by mcsne assignments, to Munsingwear, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn., a corporation of Delaware Application February 4, 1935, Serial No. 4,910 YY4 clams (ci. :zwem
`This invention relates to improvements in a garment of the corset or girdle type in which re movable bones are provided and it is the object ofthe invention 'to provide the garmentV with means for covering the exposed portions of the removable bones so as to protect the wearer against being pinched between the garment and the exposed part of the bone.`
More particularly stated, the object of the in- 1'01 vention is toprovide a shield which normally overlies the exposed parts of the bones of such garments as corsets and girdles but which shield, being flexible, can be displaced or pulled aside to give access. to the bones for removal.
With the foregoing object in mind, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing a form of garment embodying my invention. It is to be understood, however, that I do not limit myself to the particular form of garment shown, nor do I limit myself to the particular form of bone protecting shield. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that my invention may be embodied in different forms in any type of garment of this general character.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of the inside of a garw ment showing my invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front view of the garment similar to Figure l with the shield or protecting member cut away to show the arrangement of the bones; and
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure l.
Referring now to the drawing, reference num eral ID indicates generally the bodyl portion of a garment to which my invention is applied. This garment may be of any of the well known forms now available upon the market; that is to say it may be made of all elastic material or partly elastic and partly inelastic; it may be made long or short, that is to say it may be of the girdle type or a full length corset; and it may be made in the form of a seamless tube or in sections suitably secured together.
Reference numeral Il indicates. garter tabs of any well known construction which may be applied to the garment. It is to be understood, however, that these are not essential because my invention, to be hereafter more fully described, is, of course, applicable to the type of girdle which is not provided with garter tabs and which is. worn by a person when the stockings are rolled.
Reference character I2 indicates an insert of one-way stretch material which is located in the front of the garment and, as shown, extends from the top to the bottom thereof. By one-way stretch material, I mean such material as, in this case, stretches only up and down whereas the body portion of the garment is, in this-case, made of so called two-way stretch material, being material which stretches both vertically and horizontally. While the insert is shown to extend the full length of the garment, it is obvious that it need not be of such lengthbut mayterminate garment.
`Reference character M indicates bonepockets which are provided in the front of the garment and in the said insert of one-Way stretch material. The formation of these bone pockets is a matter which is well known to those skilled in the art and no further description thereof is necessary. It is to be observed, especially from Figure 2, that the bone pockets are cut away, or discontinuous, as at the point I5 so that the bones I5 are exposed for a certain part of their length. This arrangement is such that the exposed parts of the bones I6 may be grasped for removal of the bones from the pocket when desired, as when the garment is being laundered.
Reference character Il indicates a shield member which I have provided and which covers the exposed parts or sections of the bones I6. This member is suitably secured as by stitching I8 to the edges of the insert I2 and is otherwise loose or detached from the garment. The said shield Il may be made of any suitable material whether elastic or inelastic because, being secured in the manner shown, the nature of the material of the shield will not interfere with the proper stretching of the garment to conform to the figure and position of the wearer. Being loose from the rest of the garment, the said shield I'I can be pulled aside so as to make the exposed parts of the bones I6 accessible for Withdrawal.
It will now be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have provided a device which will successfully cover the exposed parts of the removable bones in corsets and other garments of that type. It is found in actual use that often the exposed parts of the bones being next to theskin of the wearer, the body is sometimes pinched between the bones and the garment and the shield or protecting member of my invention will prevent this.
My invention provides a neat and effective shield for the exposed parts of the bones which is of smooth appearance, practical in construction and adds but slightly to the cost of the garment.
I claim as my invention:
1. A garment of the character described including a body portion having therein an insert arranged at the middle front portion of the body, a pair of longitudinally extending bone pockets and bones therein carried by the insert, and arranged in the upper part only of the insert, one at each side of the midline of the insert, each pocket being cut away intermediately to expose a part of the bone, and a shield transverse to and covering the exposed parts of the bones and iastened only by opposite ends to said insert at points laterally of the bones.
2. A garment of the character described including a body portion, having therein an insert arranged at the middle front portion of the body, a pair of longitudinally extending bone pockets and bones therein carried by the insert and arranged in. the upper part only of the insert, one at each side of the midline of the insert, each pocket being cut away intermediately to expose a part of the bone, and a shield transverse to and covering the exposed parts of the bones and fastened only by op-posite ends to said insert at points laterally of the bones, the middle part of the shield being narrower than the end portions tofacilitate grasping and access tothe exposed portions of the bones when the shield is pulled outwardly.
3. A garment of the character described including a body portion made of two-way stretch material having therein an insert of one-wavy stretch material arranged at the middle front portion of the body, and stretchable only length- Wise, a pair of longitudinally extending bone pockets and bones therein carried by the insert and arranged in the upper part only of the insert, one at each side of the midline of the insert, each pocket being cut away intermediately to expose a part of they bone, and a shield transverse to and covering the exposed parts of the bones and fastened only by opposite ends to said insert at points laterally of the bones.
4. A garment of the character described including a body portion made of two-way stretch material arranged at the middle front portion of the body, and stretchable only lengthwise, a pair of longitudinally extending bone pockets and bones therein carried by the insert and arranged in the upper part only of the insert, one at each side of the midline of the insert, each pocket being cut away intermediately to expose a part of the bone, and a shield transversely to and covering the exposed parts of the bones and fastened only by opposite ends to said insert at points laterally of the bones, the middle part of the shield being narrower than the end portions to facilitate grasping and access to the exposed portions of the bones, when the shield is pulled outwardly.
