UNITED TATES" PATENT OFFIE.
ANDREW L. MANNING, OF BOONEVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 211,632, dated January 28, 1879; application filed May 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. MANNING, of Booneville, in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of plows called cotton-sweeps, and it consists in the followingconstruction The standard is formed with a guide, stud, or pin on its forward face, which works within a vertical slot made in the upper body of the detachable share or bullton gue, which latter constitutes the front working part of the plow. This share is adjustable in a vertical plane, and is maintained in the desired position by a clamping-bolt. Pivoted to the respective sides of a horizontal bar, which connects the lower extremities of the standard and the rear stock of the plow, are the two detachable blade -win gs or sweeps proper. They are pivoted to the plow by a single bolt, and are adapted to be adjusted in a verticallyinclined plane by means of a clamping-bolt, which latter works in oblong slots formed respectively in the diagonal end bodies of the sweeps, forward of their pivotal attachment to the plow.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is aview, in perspective, of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in detail of a modified form of wing. Fig. 3 is a view, in detail, of the form of wing shown in Fig. l as connected with the sweep.
The standard A is provided with the stud or pin a, formed rigidly on its forward face, and which serves as a guide for the vertical adjustment of the detachable share B. This share is preferably made in bull-tongue form,
and is secured to the standard at the desired elevation by means of a bolt, 1), which latter serves also as a guide within the shares slot, and is clamped thereto by an ordinary nut. WVelded or in other suitable manner made rigid with the lower end of the standard is the horizontal bar 0, which, extending rearward, connects with the lower extremity of the stockpiece D by an upward extension, 0, which latter is fastened to this stock-piece within a corresponding recess, (1, formed in its side. To the forward body of this horizontal bar the forward diagonally-bent stems of the two sweeps E are pivoted, on respective sides thereof, by the single bolt h, which passes through slot f, and constitutes a pivotal point of attachment, about which the sweep blades or wings have adjustable movement in a vertical plane. Each of their stem-bodies, forward of this pivotal point, is made in diagonal form and provided with a vertically-elongated slot, g, in which the clamping-bolt It works. By loosening this latter bolt the sweep-wings may be turned or moved upon their pivotal attachment so as to throw them up or down in a vertically-inclined plane of adjustment. In this way the wings are varied in set to suit the wishes of the plowman, and to throw more or less dirt to the plants, as desired, while at the same time the front share is adapted to be correspondingly adjusted, so asto cause said share and wings to work at the same depth.
If so wished, the wings may be removed from the plow and the bull-tongue share used alone or this share may be substituted by any other plow-forming device, it being evident that by reason of the detachable connection of both the share and the sweep-Wings to the stock of the plow their ready disconnection will admit of the substitution of other parts therefor, either in whole or part. So, also, it is apparent that I may use different groundworking forms of wings, accordingly as the desired manner of cultivation may require. 1 have illustrated this by Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, in which different forms of wings are shown detached from the sweep.
It will be understood that these different shares and wings, to be substituted respectively. for the same as shown in the drawings, differ therefrom only in the form of their ground-working bodies and edges, while their general construction will be identical with that which is described in the foregoing-that is, the front detachable share will be adapted, as set forth, to be adjusted bodily up and down, and thus be capable of having its working depth vary with and correspond to the working depth of the wings, as the latter may be changed in position. Also, the wings will be made each in single piece and formed with a diagonal stem, which latter respectively fit in close lateral contact against the sides of the horizontal bar, to which they are fastened, said wings being adapted to be moved in a vertically-inclined plane of adjustment by means of a single pivot, which works in the rear holes formed respectively in said diagonal stems, in connection with a single clamping-bolt, which works in the oblong slots formed forwardly of said holes.
A construction and combination such as this distinguishes my invention from what has previously been done, since it is old and well known to vertically adjust a front detachable share on many different kinds of agricultural implements; and it is also common to adjust in a vertically-inclined plane wings which are made respectively in single piece.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a cotton-sweep, the combination, with a' front detachable share adapted to be vertically adjusted, of side wings, respectively made in single piece and formed with diagonal stems, which latter fit against a horizontal bar connecting the standard and rear stock of the plow, said stems being provided with holes in their rear portions and oblong slots forward of the same, whereby a single pivot and bolt adjust the wings in a vertically-inclined plane, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of May, 1878.
