In accordance with the present invention, however, an actuating roller, for example having a cam groove, may be arranged directly to engage that only one moving part is necessary to impart a reciprocatory movement to the blade; thus sliding saddles, actuating plates, oscillating rods and the like are avoided. This construction also per-- mits the provision of a blade with two cutting edges with the driving roller symmetrically arranged relative to the blade and these edges. Furthermore, the actuating roller itself may be disposed with its axis'of rotation in the region of the plane of the blade, so that the exposed portion of the roller does not protrude unduly above the retainer or cap of the holder. Accordingiy, a holder may be provided which may have 'a compact, i'lat form comparable to that provided by holders which are not supplied 'with reciprocating blades.
.An important aspect of the invention involves the form of the blade support which may be made of a single piece of sheet metal to provide an opening and recess to receive the lower part of the actuating roller and to provide ears in which the ends of the roller are journaled. The
support may, for example, have a rectangular opening or recess with struck-up ears at its ends, while the metal at the intermediate part of the opening is pressed downwardly to afford two generally semi-cylindrical "sleevg elements that may enclose portions of the roller and an intermediate cylindrical boss integral with these elements to receive the handle. The boss. and elements cooperate in providing a stii reinforcement for the portion of the support which is and especially .the cam groove of the roller and ful adjustment.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the principles of the present invention, the handle of the razor is designated by numeral l. The upper end of the handle ts tightly within an integral boss 2 of the blade support 3, which forms a part of the blade holder. 'Ihe support may be provided with a pluralityof elongate recesses 4 which separate its body portion from rail-like guard portions 5. The support may also have a plurality of small protuberances l (Fig. 3) dis- -posed adjoining the openings 4 to engage the lower surface 'of the blade and support the same.
The support 3 is provided with a central generally rectangular opening I0, the intermediate parts of the sides of which are bulged ,slightly to conform to thecurvatureof boss 2. The metal at the ends of the opening I0 is struck upwardly to afford small ears I5 which have openings in I1. 'I'he elements 20 are 'integral with the boss.
2 and in effect afford a recess beneath the central part of opening I0 in which the lower part of the roller is received. Obviously the elements 2l and the boss 2 cooperate in reinforcing the guard in the region of the opening Il and afford a rigid structure where the guard or support is connected to the handle.
The holder may also include a retainer 2i which is connected by a suitable hinge 2l to one end of the support 3. The opposite end of the retainer is provided with a resilient clip 22 which may y in sliding engagement with the edges of the ears..

When the clip 22 is pressed upwardly and outwardly, the retainer may be swung to the open position shown in Fig. 3, thus exposing the surface of the support so that a blade may be disposed therein. The retainer is also provided with a central generally Irectangular opening 2l in which the upper part of the roller I1 is received. The ends of this opening are provided with notches 28 in which the edges of the ears I! may be received, the upper surfaces of the latter being disposed substantially in the region of the upper surface of the retainer, as shown in Fig. 1.
The blade 40 may be of generally rectangular form, as shown in Fig. I5, having parallel cutting edges 4I and a central opening l2. This opening may be o f generally rectangular form. having straight parallel sides to slide in juxtaposition to the edges of the ears I5 (Figs. 4 and 6). The intermediate portions of the sides 43 of the opening are, however, provided with inwardly extending follower tabs or lugs which are received in the cam groove I9. These ears may have straight edges to engage the sides of the groove and curved ends to facilitate their initial engagement with the groove. I
When a blade of this type is to be disposed in the razor, the retainer 2l is swung to its open position illustrated in Fig. 3, and the blade is moved downwardly so that the tabs engage the cam groove I9, the curved ends of these ears readily moving into initial engagement with the -cam groove. The blade is then moved downwardly so that the ends of opening 42 fit about the ears I5 and-the sides 4I of the opening are The retainer 25 may then be swung to its normal position so that the upper part of the roller extends through the opening 2l in the retainer.
When the razor is used, the roughened portions support the roller forming guide means to restrain the blade so that it follows a straight-line path. The structural ent illustrated herein permits a blade support to be formed of a single.
piece of sheet metal not only to provide guard rails and a boss portion to receive the end of the handle, but also to provide the guard'sleeve elements 2li below the roller, these elements also connecting the opposite sides of the opening Il and affording a reinforcement. for this portion of the holder; furthermore, the ears which support the actuating roller and which afford guide means for the reciprocating blade may also be integral with the supporting blade. Due to the arrangement of the axis of the roller in theregion of the plane of the blade, an unusually compact construction is provided so that the exposed portion ofthe roller does extend substantially above the retaining plate. Thus neatness of appearance is afforded and convenience in shaving is facilitated.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A razor of the class described comprising a blade support, a blade, a retainer normally cooperating with the support in holding the blade in place, an actuating roller rotatably mounted on the support and having its axis of rotation near the plane of the blade, the retainer having an opening through which the upper portion of the roller is 'exposed for engagement with the flesh of the user of the razor, said roller having a cam portion, said blade having an integral part en- Seeing said cam portion and functioning as a follower sothat the blade is reciprocated as the roller is rotated.
2. A razor of the class described comprising a blade support, a blade, a retainer cooperating with the support in holding the blade in place, said support having upstanding elements extending into an opening in the blade and affording guide means therefor to restrain the blade to follow a straight-line path, an actuating roller rotatably mounted on said elements and providing a cam portion, a part of the blade engaging said cam portion and functioning as a follower therefor so that the blade is reciprocated in response to rotation of the roller.
3. A razor of the class described comprising a blade support, a blade, a retainer cooperating with the support in holding the blade in place, said support having a central opening and upstanding integral ears at the ends of the opening, the blade having an opening with its sides slidably engaging .the edges of said ears so that the blade is constrained to follow a' straight-line path, an actuating roller journaled in openings in said ears and having a cam portion, portionsy of the blade extending inwardly from the opposite sides of its opening and engaging said cam portion to function as followers therefor so that the blade is-recipiocated in response to rotation of the roller.
4. A razor of the class described comprising a lblaide support, a blade, a retainer cooperating of the blade extending inwardly from the sides of its opening and engaging said cam portion to function as followers therefor, integral portionsv of said support being of substantially,semicylin drical form and being disposed adjoining the central part of the opening in the support to afford shields for the lower part of the roller while con-l necting the portions of the support at opposite sides of the opening therein.
5. A razor of the class described comprising a blade support, a blade, `a retainer cooperating with the support in holding the blade in place, said support having af central opening and upstanding integral ears at the ends of the opening, the blade having an opening with parallel sides slidably engaging the edges of said ears so that the blade is constrained to follow a straight-line path, an actuating roller journaled in openings in said ears and having a cam portion, portions of the bladeextending inwardly from the sides of its opening and engaging said cam portion to function as followers therefor, integral portions of said support being of substantially semi-cylindrical form and disposed adjoining the central part of the opening in the support while connecting the portions of the support at opposite sides of the opening therein, a portion of said support providing a central boss for connection to a handle, said integral portions being integrally connected to said boss.
6. A razor of the class described comprising a -blade support, a blade having an opening with parallel sides, a retainer cooperating with the` support in holding the blade in place, said support having upstanding ears extending through the opening in the blade, the parallel sides of lsaid opening slidably engaging the edges of said ears so that the latter afford guide means to constrain the blade to follow a straight-line path, an actuating roller having its ends journaled on said ears and providing a ycam portion, the roller having its axis of rotation disposed adjoining the plane of the blade, the retainer having an opening through which the upper part of said roller is exposed, a part of the blade engaging said cam portion and functioning as a follower therefor so that the blade is reciprocated in response to rotation of the roller. A razor of the class described comprising a 4blade support, a blade having an opening with parallel sides, a retainer cooperating with the Y support in holding the blade in place, said support having upstanding ears extending through the opening in the blade, the parallel sides of said opening slidably engaging the edges of said ears so that the latter aiford guide means to constrain the blade to follow a straight-line path, an actuating roller having its ends journaled on said ears and providing a cam portion, the roller having its axis of rotation disposed adjoining the plane of the blade, the retainer having an opening through which the upper part of said roller is exposed, integral projections of the blade extending inwardly from the parallel sides of its opening and engaging said cam portion, said projections functioning as followers so that the blade is reciprocated in response to rotation of the roller.
8. A razor ofthe class described comprising a blade support, a blade having an opening with parallel sides, a retainer cooperating with the support and holding the blade in place, said support having upstanding ears extending through jection extending inwardly from the side of the opening in the blade and engaging said cam portion to function as a follower therefor, said supl port having a generally semi-cylindrical part dis,- posed below the roller and affording a recess in which the lower part of the roller is received, said semi-cylindrical part connecting portions of the support at opposite sides of the roller.
9. lIn a razor lof the class described, a blade support comprising a plate-like body portion having a central opening therein, opposite sides of said opening being connected by a generally curved shield portion, upstanding ears disposed at the ends of the opening, and a roller journaled on the ears and having its lower part received in said shield portion.

In a razor of the class described, a support on said ears and providing avcam portion, a procomprising a plate-like body portion having a central opening therein, integral upstanding ears at the ends of the opening, a roller journaled on the ears, integral parts of said body portion being shaped to curve downwardly below the roller to t afford a recess below the opening in which a part of the roller is received, and an integral boss for connection to a handle, said boss and said integral parts being Aintegrally connected to each tion of the roller whereby the blade may be reciprocated in a path parallel to its cutting edges in response to rotation of the, roller.
12. A razor of the class described comprising a handle, a blade holder connected to the handle and symmetrically arranged in relation thereto, a cam roller symmetrically supported by the holder,
a double-edged blade mounted-on the holder and having a central opening with portions engaging the roller to function as followers so that the blade may be reciprocated in response to rotation of the roller.
13. A razor of the class described comprising a handle, a supportconnected to the handle and symmetrically arranged in relation thereto, a cam roller symmetrically supported by the support, a
double-edged blade mounted on the support and having a central opening with portions engaging the roller to function as followers so that the blade may be reciprocatedl in response to rotation of the roller, and a swinging retainer normally positioned to hold the blade on the support, saidv retainer having a central opening through which the roller is exposed for engagement .with the flesh of theuser of the razor.

A razor of, the class described comprising a blade holder providing upstanding ears, a cam roller rotatably mounted on said ears, a blade having a central opening in which the roller and ears are disposed, said opening being shaped to provide a follower portion engaging the roller so that the blade is reciprocated when the `roller is rotated, said -opening providing edges engaging the ears so that the latter guide the blade in a rectilinear path as it is being reciprocated.

A thi-n razor blade of the class` described having opposite parallel straight cutting edges and having a central opening, the opening being of rectangular form with opposite sides parallel to the respective cutting edges, said opening extending the major portion of the length of the blade, the intermediate parts of said opposite sideseach being interrupted by a single relatively small inwardiy extending lug, the lugs being similar and directly opposite each other, the sides being straight between the lugs and the ends of thev opening to engage parts oi' a blade holden so that the blade may be guided in a straight line reciprocating path, said blade being symmetrical relative to both its longitudinal and transverse central axes. y
