Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYER W. PRAGER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 2] 1,586, dated January 21, 1879 application filed December 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYER W. PRAGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Package of Oigars, which invention is fully set forth in thefollowin g specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a package put up according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is'to produce a cylindrical package of cigars from bundles or sub-packages, a package of this shape being the most desirable and the bundles being convenient both for sale and use; and it consists in a package formed of a series of bundles, each containing an uneven number of five or more cigars, arranged in layers, the bundles being each tied up separately, and the Whole being tied together side by side, in such a manher that the layer of each bundle containing the least number of cigars is innermost, "whereby the package is caused to assume a cylindrical shape.
I11 carrying out my invention, I first form the bundles A by tying up an uneven number of cigars in layers, using a ribbon, a, for this purpose. The layers thus produced are of different proportions, each containing one cigar more or less than the other. I then take a sufficient number of the bundles A to form a package of the desired size and place the bundles side by side in a circle, allowing the cigars to rest on their ends, and bringing the layer of each bundlecontaining the least number of cigars innermost. I then tie together the bundles so arranged by means of a ribbon, 1), whereby I obtain a package of cylindrical shape. If desired the bundles Acan be placed around a cylindrical core in tying the same together, this core being removed after the package is shaped, and, if desired, moreover, the central opening produced by the arrangement of the bundles can be filled by one or more additional cigars. I usually take five cigars to each of the bundles A and place four bundles in each package, but these proportions can be increased to suit the fancy of the manufacturer.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cylindrical package of cigars consisting of a series of bundles, each containing an an? even number of five or more cigars, arranged in layers, the bundles being each tied up separately, and the whole being tied together side by side, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day ofDecember, 1878.
