ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 26, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,115,685 GARMENT FORM Application September 10, 1936, Serial No..100,095'
8 Claims.
The present invention relates to garment forms, and more particularly, to forms of the type-which are used in connection with hangers or stands for displaying dresses and other garments in 5. show windows andstores.
In garment forms of this type-the body of the form comprises aqrelatively'thin, flat member having its longitudinal side edges shaped in simulation of the humanfigure whereby when the form is positioned inwardly of the garment, the latter by draping over'the form conforms to the curvature of said side edges so that the garment has an appearance more closely approximating that W-hichLit is intended to have-when worn. In this manner the garment is attractively displayed without the use of three dimensional forms, but one of the objections to the display of garments on forms of this type arises from the fact that in forms of this type as heretofore constructed, no provision is. made for properly arranging the sleeves of the garment. I It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to obviate this objection and for that purpose to provide a flat garment form with means for positioning the sleeves of the garment whereby the latter may be attractively displayed in relation to the body portion of the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjustably and/or detach- 30- ably mounting. the garment form on the standard of the display stand in close relation thereto.
A further object is to provide means for attaching the form to the display in such manner that the attaching means, as well as the form,
'; is invisible even when used with low neck garments.
The above objects of the invention, objects ancillary thereto, and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following description considered with reference to the accompanying drawing forminga part of the present specification. In the drawing: Fig. l is a front view in elevation of the garment form of the present invention mounted on a display stand, and illustratingin dotted line a part of the garment; i
Fig. 2 is a rear view in. elevation of the upper part of the garment form mounted on the standaid of the display stand;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged. scale on the line 3-3 of Fig; 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. 5;), 2; and
used with low neck garments it will not be visible through the low-neck. portion of the garment. It will be understood by those skilled in the art, that the garment form is inserted within the dress or. other garment to be displayed and that thedress is suspended from the hanger 20 carried at the upper: end of a vertical standard 22 of. a display stand;
When the dress or other garment is thus mounted on the display stand with the garment form l0 inserted therein, the body portion of. the garment conforms to the curvature of the form and is-thus attractively'displayed. In accordance with the present invention, however, provision is made for improving the attractiveness of the display, and more particularly, for positioning and securingv the; sleeves in such relation as'to improve their appearance. For this purpose the garment form It; is provided at the upper end thereof with arms 24' constructed and arranged to-be inserted within the sleeves of the garment and also arranged to hold the sleeves in the de sired position with relation to'the body l2 ofthe 3 garment form. As here shown, the arms 24, like the body 12; are relatively thin and flat and may be made of the same material as that of the body portion of. the garment form. Said arms are pivotally connected at the upper ends of the bifurc-ated'portions 26 of the body l2 by means of pivot pins 2%. Spacing members 39 are interposed be tween the bifurcated portions 26 and the arms 24- thus providing clearance between the confronting surfaces of the body portion I2'and said arms.
The pivot pins 28 pass through the arms 24, spacing members 38., and bifurcated portions 26, and these parts are held together in face to face relation by the pivot pins whereby to provide sub stantialfrictionalengagement between the spacing members 30 and the contiguous surfaces of the arms 24 with the result that although the arms 24 can be readily rotated about the pivot pins 28 they tend to remain in the position in which they are placed. By virtue of this construction, the arms 24 can be adjusted to the desired position for displaying the sleeves of the garment to the best advantage, and more specifically, by reason of the clearance between the arms 24 and the bifurcated portions 26, portions of the material of the sleeve may be inserted between said arms and the bifurcated portions of the garment form when it is desired to arrange the sleeves close to the body portion of the garment. When the sleeve portions are inserted between the arms and the body of the garment form, the sleeves are held in the desired position without the use of pins or other fastening means, since the space in which said sleeve portions are inserted is relatively narrow. Also, when displaying sleeveless dresses, gowns, or other garments, the arms 24 may be positioned to wholly overlie the body portion l2 of the form whereby they are not exposed to view, but are concealed by the body portion of the garment.
For attaching the garment form ID to the standard 22 of the display stand, there is provided a spring clamp 32 comprising a spring metal plate 34 secured to the body I2, preferably at the waistline portion thereof, in any suitable manner, as for example, by rivets 36. The side portions of the plate are curved, forming confronting tubeshaped spring clamping members 38. The operation of this clamp is obvious from the illustration and the foregoing description thereof, and it will be observed that the tube-shaped members 38 resiliently engage the standard 22 when the garment form I 0 is mounted thereon. When thus mounted on the standard, the garment form is positioned close thereto. This close position of the form permits the garment to hang in vertical position on the display stand and when the arms of the garment form are utilized for holding the garment sleeves in adjusted position, said sleeves hang naturally from the shoulders in a vertical direction and are not ofiset from the vertical plane of the garment. It will be observed further that by means of this clamp the garment form may be readily attached and detached from said standard and may be adjusted longitudinally thereof by a sliding movement of the clamp in relation to the standard.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the clamp has auxiliary spring portions 39 which resiliently bear against the body portion of the form. Portions of the dress may be secured between said spring portions 39 of the clamp and said garment form for retaining the waist portion of the dress in the desired relation to the form.
It is thus seen that the construction herein shown and described is well adapted to accomplish the several objects of the present invention. While this construction is considered the present preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the latter is capable of other embodiments and further that the construction herein shown or described may be modified in ac cordance with changes which will occur to those skilled in the art in View of the present disclosure. Accordingly, I do not wish to be limited precisely to the present construction or to any part thereof, except as may be required by the appended claims and the prior art.
