7 Claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and useful mechanism to print on an inserted slip the amount set up on a machine, such as a cash register, thereafter to hold and 5 move the inserted slip out of the path of the printing mechanism and thereafter to make a second impression on a detail record to be re tained within the machine. We have shown the same as an improvement on that type of mechanism shown in the Patent 1,993,452, issued to W. L. Paden, on March 5, 1935.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational fragmentary view of a cash register with our mechanism incorporated therein, and
Figure 2 is a side view'of the mechanism, certain of the parts being shown in cross section.
In the said patent is shown an actuating arm I which rotates a cam plate 2 one complete revolution in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 2 each time the machine is operated. The cam 2 is secured to a cam plate 3 provided with cam surfaces 4 and 5. The cam plate 3 is spaced a short distance from the cam plate 2 and is connected therewith through the shaft 6 and a pin 1. Arms 8 as shown in the said patent are controlled by the cash register keys and positioned so that the printing type 9 are positioned so as to print the amount set up on the cash register. The printing mechanism l and the feeding mechanism for the ink ribbon is fully described in the said patent.
A record supply roll of paper ll supplies the paper l2, which paper passes under a guide l3 mounted on a fixed part of the machine and thence over an autographic table M, from whence it passes to a paper take-up roll l as fully described in the said'patent.
A lever 16, as shown in said patent, is mounted on a fixed shaft l1. One end of this lever is provided with a spring l8 and at its other end it is provided with a stud roller l9, which roller is moved downwardly against the tension of the spring I8 by the cam surface 20 of the cam plate 2 as soon as the cam plate commences its rotation in a clockwise direction as, viewed in Figure 2. The lever l6 carries a pin 2| which on the above described movement is moved downwardly. This pin contacts the cam surface 22 on a slide 23, which slide is provided with a slot 24 which receives the shaft I1 and with a slot 25 which receives the fixed stud 26 on which the table l4 rests so that as soon as the cam plate 2 starts its rotation the slide 23 is moved slightly to the left as viewed in Figure 2. The slide 23 has a downwardly extending arm 21 which carries a forwardly extending plate 28 which abuts against a plate 29 carried by a slide 30. The slide 30 is provided With slots 3! and 32 which receive guide studs 33 and 34. The slide 30 carries a pin 35 to Which is attached a spring 38 which at its other end is connected with the stud 33, thereby holding the plate 29 in contact with the plate 28. The slide 30 is provided with a cam surface 3! on which rides a roller 38 carried by a lever 39 mounted on a stud 4D. The lever 39 has an upwardly extending arm M which underlies an over-turned plate 42 carried by a lever 43 mounted on the stud 4B, which lever 43 is provided with an upwardly extending arm 44 to which is attached a spring 45. The lever 43 is also provided with a stud 48 on which is mounted a gear 41 and friction roller 49 Which projects through a slot 58 in the table 5|. Mounted on the table is a holder 52 which carries a shaft 53 mounted at its opposite side walls, on which shaft is mounted an idler roller 54. A receipt or inserted strip 55 would be placed on the table 5! before the machine was operated and positioned between the rollers 54 and 49 .and having its inner end contacting with a stop 55 carried by the printing mechanism l0. As soon as the roller i9 is depressed, which is immediately after the cam plate 2 commences its rotation, the slides 23 and 30 are moved to the left as viewed in Figure 2 for a short distance. As the slide 30 is thus moved the roller 38 will be moved upwardly by the cam surface 31 of the slide 30 so that the arm 5| will contact and elevate the plate 42 and elevate the friction roller 49 through the lever 43, thereby gripping the receipt or inserted strip 56 against the roller 54.
Immediately after the cam plate 2 has caused the roller 49 to be elevated as above described a nose 5'! of a lever 58 is engaged by the cam surface 4 of the cam plate 3 depressing the righthand end of this lever which is mounted on the shaft 11 as viewed in Figure 2 and elevating the left-hand end thereof as viewed in said figure so as to move the platen 59 carried thereby into engagement with the inserted strip 56, pressing the same against the printing mechanism It so as to impress thereon whatever is set up on the printing type 9.
It is now necessary to move the inserted strip 56 out of the path of movement of the platen 59 and this is accomplished as follows. The pin 1, as above stated, extends between the cam plates '2 and 3 and there is a space between these plates. The slide 23 has an arm 60 which is contacted by the said pin 1 so that the slide 23 is moved further to the left as viewed in Figure 2 than it was moved as heretofore described, which movement, of course, is imparted to the slide 30. The slide 30 is provided with a shoulder 6| which engages a pin 62 on a lever 63, which lever is provided with a segmental gear 46 which meshes with and drives the gear 41 operatively connected to the friction roller 49, thereby driving the friction roller in an anti-clockwise: direction and ejecting the inserted strip 56 from the path of movement of the platen 59. A spring 64 tends to return the segmental gear to its original position.
Immediately after the inserted strip 56 is ejected, as above described the nose 5! of the lever 58 will engage the cam surface 5 of the cam plate 3 and will cause the platen tobe elevated for a second time, this time moving the paper strip l2 so as to receive a printed impression.
Immediately after the nose 5'! has passed beyond the cam surface 5 it is no longer in contact with the cam plate 3 and the pin I has passed beyond the arm 6|] and after the roller 19 has passed beyond the major are of the cam plate 2 the parts will be returned by their respective springs to the position shown in Figure 2.
We realize that many changes may be made in our invention without departing from the spirit thereof and we, therefore, desire to claim the same broadly except as we may limit ourselves in the appended claims.
Having now described our invention, we claim:
1. In a register, a slide provided with a cam surface and a shoulder, means whereby said slide is actuated, a lever actuated by said cam surface, a plurality of rollers, means whereby said cam actuated lever moves one of said rollers towards the other roller so as to engage and hold a piece of paper, a second lever actuated by said shoulder, and means whereby the shoulder actuated lever causes the movable roller to be rotated while it engages the piece of paper.
2. In a register, a slide, means whereby said slide is actuated, said slide being provided with a cam surface, a lever movable by said cam surface when the slide is actuated, a roller mounted on said lever, a shoulder forming a part of said slide, a segmental gear actuated by said shoulder, a pinion operatively connecting said roller and segmental gear, and a second roller mounted on a fixed axis, the first roller being adapted to engage a piece of paper between itself and the second roller and to move the piece of paper when the segmental gear is actuated.
3. In a register, a slide provided with a cam surface and a shoulder, an idler roller, a friction drive roller, means whereby said slide is actuated, means actuated by the cam surface during the first part of the movement of said slide to move the drive roller into holding engagement with said idler roller, and means actuated by said shoulder to rotate said drive roller after the drive roller has been moved by said cam surface.
4. In a register having printing mechanism and means for causing said printing mechanism to make two impressions upon. each operation thereof means for supporting a slip of paper in a position to receive one of said impressions, and an ejecting device for said slip of paper comprising two rollers normally spaced one from the other to receive said slip of paper between them, an actuating device having means for moving one of said rollers toward the other roller to clamp said slip of paper against movement during the taking of the first impression and having other means to thereafter rotate the first mentioned roller to eject said slip of paper prior to the taking of the second impression, and means for operating said actuating device in timed relation to said printing mechanism.
5. In a register having printing mechanism and means for causing said printing mechanism to make two impressions upon each operation thereof means for supporting a slip of paper in a position to receive one of said impressions, and an ejecting device for said slip of paper comprising two rollers normally spaced one from the other to receive said slip of paper between them, an actuating member, means operating in timed relation to said printing mechanism to impart operative movement to said actuating member prior to and immediately following the taking of the first impression, means actuated by the first movement of said member to move one of said rollers toward the other roller and clamp said slip of paper against movement, and means actuated by the second movement of said member to rotate the first mentioned roller and eject said slip of paper.
6. In a register having printing mechanism and means for causing said printing mechanism to make two impressions upon each operation thereof, means for supporting a slip of paper in a. position to receive one of said impressions, and an ejecting device for said slip of paper comprising two rollers normally spaced one from the other to receive said slip of paper between them, a slidable actuating member, means actuated by one movement of said member to move one of said rollers toward the other roller and clamp said slip of paper against movement, means actuated by a second movement of said member in the same direction to rotate the first mentioned roller and eject said slip of paper, and means operating in timed relation to said printing mechanism to impart the first mentioned movement to said member prior to the taking of the first impression and to impart the second movement to said member after the first impression has been taken and before the second impression has been taken.
7. In a register having printing mechanism and means for causing said printing mechanism to make two impressions upon each operation thereof, means for supporting a slip of paper in a position to receive one of said impressions, and an ejecting device for said slip of paper comprising two rollers normally spaced one from the other to receive said slip of paper between; them, one of said rollers being movable toward and from the other roller, a lever connected with said movable roller to move the same toward said other roller and clamp said slip of paper between said rollers, a second lever having means to rotate said movable roller and eject said slip of paper, means operating in timed relation to said printing mechanism to impart operative movement to the first mentioned lever prior to the taking of the first impression, to retain the same in operative position during the taking of said impression and to then impart operative movement to said second lever, and means for retracting both levers after said slip of paper has been ejected.
