1 Claim.
This invention relates broadly to revolving type flat carding-machines, and more particularly to an improved apparatus for grinding the clothing of the top flats of carding machines;
and the invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational View illustrating the application of the invention to a carding machine.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken sub-- stantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of a journal for the grinding roller.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a slide member and Figure 5 is a perspective View of a combination fixed guide and lifting plate.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a horn bracket 5 fixedly mounted by being bolted or otherwise secured thereto, to the card, and in this connection it will be understood that there are two of these brackets, one attached to each side of the card, and that the other parts mentioned are also in duplicate, one at each side of the card, the grinding roller and flats passing across the top of the card, the supports at both sides being alike. Hence for convenience of description there is shown and described but one horn bracket and associated parts.
As before stated the horn bracket 5 is bolted a as at 6 to the side of the card and is firm and stationary. Bracket 5 is provided with an enlarged head provided with a notch I.
Bolted or otherwise secured as at 8 to one side of the head of the bracket is a substantially U-shaped fixed combination guide and fitting plate indicated generally by the reference numeral 9. The combination element 9 includes the aforementioned U-shaped part In bolted as at 8 to the head of the bracket 5 and a lifting plate I I that extends through the slot 1 of the bracket 5 and is provided with a raised protuberant I2 the upper surface of which is convex, and over the surface I2 the curved under surfaces I3 of the flats I4 slide and are raised thereby up into contact with a vertically shiftable guiding plate I5, and against the under surface of which the flats I4 successively bear as they pass forward over the horn I6 of the horn bracket 5.

projects laterally inwardly from the inner side of a substantially U-shaped slide I B that has a sliding fit within the guide Ill. The sides of the slide I6 are provided with ribs I! that have a working lit in internal grooves I8 provided therefor in the sides of the fixed guide ID.
A journal I9 for the pintle 20 at one end of the grinding roller 2I has a sliding Working fit in the guide I5 and is provided at opposite sides thereof with channels or grooves 22 to accommodate the sides of the slide I6.
Also swivelly connected with the bottom side of the journal I9 is a threaded pin or bolt 23 the lower end of which is accommodated in a suitable opening 24 provided therefor in the bottom of the slide I6.
For adjusting the journal I9 within the slide- IB there is provided an adjusting nut 25 threaded on the pin 23 and having bearing engagement with a substantially hemi-spherical washer 29 that accommodates the stem 23 and is interposed between the nut 25 and the bottom of the slide I6. Obviously by turning the nut 25 journal I9 may be secured at the desired position of adjustment within the slide I6, at which time is also affected the desired adjustment of the journal I9 and the guide plate I5, relative to one another. Obviously be so adjusting the guide plate I5 and the journal I9 relative to one another the grinding roller is so adjusted as to give the amount of grinding required. As will be apparent from the following with this device all the wires on all the flats will be ground to the same length it being apparent, that in actual practice, that as a flat I4 passes over projection I2 of the lifting plate II the projecting end of the flat I4 engages the under surface of the guide plate I5. If the projecting end of the flatbe thick this will result of course in an upward movement of the plate I5 carrying with it the slide I6 and this upward movement of the slide I6 will be transmitted through the nut 25 and stem 23 the journal I9 so that the grinding roll or drum 2| will also move upwardly with the result that the, drum will be held at the proper distance from the top of the flat, the wires of which are being ground so that the wires of said flat will be ground to the same length as the wires of preceding and successive flats, it being apparent that the thicknesses of the ends of the flats I4 control the raising and lowering of the grinding roll or drum 2I so that the latter will be positioned at the proper distance from the top face of the flat to the end that a uniform grinding of the flat will result, the grinding of all the flats unithe construction utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed'description. What is claimed is:- In a device for grinding the top-flats of card-, ing machines, and in combination with the grinding roll of the machine, a horn bracket fixed to the machine, a substantially U-shaped guide 20 member fixedly mounted on the horn bracket,
a slide having a working fit between the legs of said guide, a journal for the grinding roll having a sliding fit in said slide and provided with an adjusting screw, and means on the screw cooperable therewith and with the slide for securing the journal at the desired position of adjustment Within the slide, said slide being free to move up and down in said guide, a laterally extending guide plate carried by said slide and against the under surface of which one end of the flats successively bear as they pass over the horn of said horn bracket, and a lifting plate projecting laterally from said fixed guide and having an upstanding projection provided with a curved surface and over which the under surfaces of the successive flats bear to be forced thereby into engagement successively with the aforementioned guide plate.
