UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE FENDER LAMP Howard C. Mead, Anderson, Ind., assignor to General Motors Corporation, Detroit, Mich., a corporation of Delaware Application November 11, 1935, Serial No. 49,111 4 Claims. (Cl. 240-84) The present invention relates to illuminating with the base 2 is an angled member 26 to which apparatus and more specifically to accessory is secured, by suitable screws 32 in its horizontal fender lamps for use on automotive vehicles. portion, a socket member 28 into which a light The principal object of this invention is to probulb 30 may be screwed. Also secured by the vide a fender lamp of pleasing appearance which screws 32 and between the socket 28 and the 5 is practical and easily serviced. member 28 is a suitable strip of insulating mate- Further objects of my invention will become rial 34 which carries a contact member 36 to evident from the following specification which which the source of current may be attached. A sets forth the embodiments of my invention as spring contact member 88 is clamped under the illustrated in the accompanying drawings in inner end of the contact member 36 and has its 10 which: other end portion bearing against the inwardly Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through projecting contact on the bulb base. A further a fender lamp of my invention. disk shaped insulating member 40 surrounds the Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention, parts inner end of the contact 38 to space the same 5 being broken away and shown in section. from the opening in the angled member 2B 5 Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the two ,through which the contact 36 projects. It will main parts of the lamp frame. thus be evident that all portions carrying elec- Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5--5 tric current to the bulb are insulated from the of Fig. 2. base.
Fig. 61s a reduced longitudinal section through The inner end of the member 26 extends ver- 20 the forward portion of a modified form of my intically and the top thereof forms the cross memvention. ber 8 of the base 2. Secured to the cross member The fender lamp of my invention is composed ill by a machine screw 42 is an angled spring of a base frame member designated generally at member 44 the latter being utilized to secure the 2, whose horizontal cross section is generally that outline frame 12 to the base 2. In assemblin of an ellipse with one end being smaller than these two parts it Should b n t d t at the rea the other and drawn more to a point. The lower po t on of the frame I2 is filled in to form a flat surface of the base is curved to match the sur- Portion 45 the forward POrtlOn O w ch is face to which it is to be attached, namely the pr s d Out 130 form an inclined Plane 45 and upper surface of a fender, and the upper plain when the frame I2 is placed upon the base 2 80 horizontal surface is flat, the forward portion 4 and drawn to its proper position forwardly the being slightly lower than the rearward portion 6. end of the spring member 44 rides upwardly on Extending horizontally across from one side to he inclined p e 48 to hold the frame I! down another are two cross frame braces B and i0. securely against the base. when it has reached Fitting on top of the base portion is a thin this position a lon b lt 50 is placed t u an 35 skeleton frame l2 of the same outline as the openin provided n the p f he Wish n horizontal cross section of the base and fitting bracket 20 and extends down throu h a threaded snugly above the latter. The frame l2 engages opening in the cross member 8 to lock the frame the upper surface of the base and in normal posiin its P p p ticn is spaced from an upwardly extended flange Enclosing the top of the lamp frame in a bulb- 40 II on the forward portion of the section 4 to perone form there are provided two portions. A form a clamping action as will later be evident. sheet metal stamping 52 extends rearwardly Extending across from one side of the frame l2 from the wis b and has flanged p 54 to another there are a plurality of brackets l6, extended under the ed o e W shbone, t e 46 I0, and 20. The brackets l6 and I8 lie in the sides being bolted down to fit within a rim groove general plane of frame l2 and the bracket 20 56 on the frame member l2. Secured within this is humped up at its center to form a wishbone bulbous member 52 and welded to the inner side the purpose of which will later be clearly underthereof are wo S c a t 58 a d 60- stood. Both of these securing members have a hori- Cast within the cross member IU of the base 2 is zontal extension 62 which is threaded to receive 50 a securing bolt 22 and also cast within the front one end of a securin Screw Fl which extends portion of the base 2 is a similar securing bolt through both the cross member ii at the for- 24 both of which are utilized to secure the fender ward portion and the plate 46 t e rearward lamp assembly to the fender. Extending rearportion. 66 wardly in the forward portion and cast integral Forwardly from the wishbone 20 is a bulbous lens structure 66 over the top of the light bulb 30. The lower edge of the lens, which is formed in conformity the outline of the frame i2, is flanged as at 68 and extends within a groove HI. Also the base 2 carries on its upper surface a resilient gasket '69 upon which the lower face of the lens rests to prevent breakage thereof and to seal the bulb compartment against dirt and water. The rearward portion of the lens 6 is flanged in a vertical plane as'at l2 and extends against a resilient packing means 14 which is held within the wishbone 20. The lens is therefore clamped in place between the base 2 and the frame l2.
In disassembling this lamp it is of course only necessary to remove the bolt 50 and slide the frame assembly to the rear to disengage spring 44 from the inclined surface and then lift the assembly clear of the, base which is substantially splitting the lamp structure upon its horizontal center line. The bulb may then be replaced and the frame structure again applied thereto.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 6, the base 2' has been modified by the addition of a vertical leg Ill and has as before the angled member 26. Extending rearwardly from the upper end of the member 26 is a tab 02 in which there are two threaded openings 84. Fitting in the forward compartment, which is triangular in horizontal cross section as in the former type, there is a triangular boat shaped cup I. This member is secured in place by a screw it which threads into the top of the leg II and by an integral tongue which extends back over the top of the member 28 and is secured by a screw 02 engaging the rearmost opening 84.
In the central portion of the member I6 is a flanged opening 04 adapted to support a bulb ll. Supported by the lower portion of the angle bracket 2' is a spring contact 30 as before which is adapted to press against the central contact of the bulb, the contact being insulated from the above the bulb by arated from the base by a cork gasket I to seal the Joint.
has a cup shaped portion I" integral therewith which seats and guides one end of a spring I" the other end of which bears against the inside of the shell I! the forward lip 54 of which engages under the member 20 to keep the two parts from separating and the spring keeps the assembly tight, the rear end of the shell being secured as before.
The construction of this modified form is otherwise the same as previously described and so it has not been deemed necessary to show the whole or to carry the description further. The changes also do not affect the assembling and disassembling methods originally described.
I claim:
1. In a fender lamp, ing means secured in a streamline base, lightthe base, a frame member having the same outline as the top of the base and adapted to be secured thereto, a flanged edge on the front of the frame member, a lens in the shape of one half of a modified cone, a flange on the lower edge of the lens to fit under the frame flange for securement of the same over the lighting means, and enclosing means secured to the rear of the frame and forming with the frame, base and lens a streamline structure.

In a fender lamp, a streamline base, lighting means secured in the base, a frame member having the same outline as the top of the base and having a flanged edge at the front thereof, a lens in the shape of one-half of a modified cone having a flange adapted to fit under the flange on the frame for securing the same over the lighting means, means for securing the base and frame members together including resilient means and threaded means and means enclosing the rear portion of the frame to form with the lens, frame and base a streamline structure.
3. In a fender lamp, a streamline base, lighting means carried by the base and forming therewith one unit, a subframe, a lens and a bulbous member, both carried by the subframe to form a second unit, resilient means connecting one end of the two units together and threaded means for connecting the other ends.
4. In a fender lamp, a streamline base, lighting means carried by the base and forming therewith one unit, a subframe. a lens and a bulbous member, both carried by the subframe to form a second unit, a spring clip carried by the base to overlie a portion of the subframe in assembled position to hold the two in juxtaposition and a bolt securing the opposite end of the subframe to the base.
