This invention relates to commodes and has for the primary object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character especially adapted for use where sewerage is not available and may be easily set up for use and easily emptied and efficiently vented of odors while in use.

With these and other objects in View, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view illustrating a commode constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section, showing apart of the removable container of the commode and its handle.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the seat of the device in operative position.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a casing having one end fully open and of substantially U-shape in cross section. The casing I is adapted to rest with its closed end upon a floor or any other suitable support and extending intosaid casing by way of the open end is a container 2. The container rests upon a cushion strip 3 arranged on the closed end of the casing. The container 2 projects slightly out of the casing at the upper end of the latter and its open end is in the form of an outwardly directed flange 4. A seat 5 is hinged to the casing, as shown at 6, and may be swung downwardly to rest upon the flange 4 of the container 2 when desiring to use the latter or may be swung upwardly, as shown in Figure 1. The container 2 has hinged thereto a bail l equipped with a hand grip 8 so that the container can be carried after its removal from the casing.

A cover 9 has formed on opposite side edges and one end thereof depending flanges ID. The cover may be readily slid over the container for the purpose of closing the latter with the flanges ID in abutting engagement with the flanges 4 to prevent accidental displacement of the cover from the container. The cover is provided with a hand grip H.

Formed integrally with the container is a handle I2, one portion of which is of hollow formation to provide a passage l3. The passage l3 communicates with the interior of the container 2 adjacent the latters upper end. The passage l3 also opensoutwardly from the handle l2 in the form of a neck M to which is detachably secured a fan housing i 5. The other end of the fan housing is detachably connected to a vent pipe i6 leading exteriorly of the building or other similar device in which the commode is employed. A skeleton frame H is located in the fan casing id for supporting an electrically driven fan I8. The motor l8 of the fan may be of a type adaptable for use with batteries or other similar electrical sources. A screen i9 is positioned over the passage l3 where the latter communicates with the container. When the commode is in use, the fan is set in operation so as to draw odors from the container and dispense them to the atmosphere.

To remove the container 2, the fan housing I5 is detached from the neck l4 and the container 2 with the cover 9 applied thereto is removed from the-casing at the rear of the latter. A cap may be placed over the neck I 4 when the fan housing 15 has been detached therefrom to prevent odors from escaping by way of the neck l4.

The cap 20 is secured to the handle I2 by a fiexible element 2|.

Referring to my modified form of invention, as shown in Figures '7 and 8, the casing 23 is only open at its upper end and receives therein a container 24 equipped with a carrying bail 25. The open end of the container 24 is flanged, as shown at 26, similarly to the flanging of the container 2.

Brackets 2'! are secured to the casing 23 adjacent the upper end thereof and carry journals 28 in which is journaled a tubular member 29. One of the journals 28 is extended to form a pipe 30 connected to the fan housing ill in the same manner as the form of my invention heretofore described. Formed on the tubular member 29 and in communication with the latter is a hollow shank 3| forming an integral part of a substantially annular channeled member 32 to which is detachably secured by fasteners 33 a seat 34. The channeled member 32 is adapted to engage with the flange 26 when the seat is in Operative position so that when the device is in use and the fan operating the odors will be drawn from the container 24 at the upper end thereof by way of the channeled member 32, shank 3|, tubular member 29 and the pipe 30. The channeled member 32 moves with the seat 34 when said seat is swung upwardly to permit the removal of the container 24 from the casing.

Instead of employing the channeled member 32 a seat 35, as shown in Figure 9, may form an integral part of the shank 3!. The seat 35 is of hollow formation to form a suction passage 36 in communication with the container by an annular slot 31 when said seat is in operative position so that the odors may be drawn from the container through the seat to the tubular member 29 and thence to the vent pipe through the fan casing.

The seat 35 may also be adapted to bed pans employed in hospitals and the passage 36 thereof may have a flexible vent pipe connected thereto.

Having described the invention, I claim:

1. A commode comprising a supporting casing, a container 'removably mounted in said casing, a hinged seat to engage the container and carried by said casing, and a suction means in communication with the upper end of the container and supported by the casing.

2. A commode comprising a casing having its rear and one end open, a container placed in and removed from said casing by way of the rear thereof, a removable cover for said container, a seat hinged to the casing to engage with the container when the cover is removed, and a suction means connected to the container.

3. A commode comprising a casing having its rear and one end open, a container placed in and removed from said casing by way of the rear thereof, a removable cover for said container, a seat hinged to the casing to engage with the container when the cover is removed, a handle formed on said container and projecting outwardly of the casing at the rear of the latter and having a passage extending into the container and opening outwardly of the handle in the form of a. neck, a screen for said passage, and a suction means connected to the neck.

4. A commode comprising a casing having its' rear and one end open, a container placed in and removed from said casing by way of the rear thereof, a removable cover for said container, a seat hinged to the casing to engage with the container when the cover is removed, a handle formed on said container and projecting outwardly of the casing at the rear of the latter and having a passage extending into the container and opening outwardly of the handle in the form of a neck, a screen for said passage, a fan casing detachably connected to the neck and connected to a vent, a frame located in said fan casing, and an electrically driven fan supported by the frame.

5. A commode comprising a supporting casing, a cushion strip in said casing, a container received by the casing and resting upon the cushion strip, a combined hinge and vent pipe secured to said casing, suction means connected to said combined vent pipe and hinge, means placing the combined hinge and vent pipe in communication with the container, and a seat carried by the last-named means.

6. A commode comprising a supporting casing, a cushion strip in said casing, a container received by the casing and resting upon the cushion strip, a combined hinge and vent pipe secured to said casing, suction means connected to said combined vent pipe and hinge, a seat connected to the combined hinge and vent pipe and including a. channeled portion communicating with the container.
