Claims.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarettes and has for its primary object to provide, in a. manner as hereinafter set forth, a cigarette which will be self- 5 lighting.

Another very important object of the invention is to provide a self-lighting cigarette embodying novel means for closing and sealing one end of the article in a manner to prevent the igniting head from being dampened by moisture from the tobacco.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a self-lighting cigarette embodying novel means for mounting 'the igniting head thereon.

Other objects'of the invention are to provide a self-lighting cigarette which will be comparatively simple in construction, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cigarette constructed in accordance with the present invention. 1

Figure 2 is an elevational view of an end portion of the cigarette, showing the head carrying element detached therefrom.

Figure 3 is an elevational view, taken at right angles to Figures 1 and 2, and showing the cigarette before the head is applied.

Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of an end portion of the cigarette, showing the head and the carrying element therefor in vertical section.

Figure 5 is a view in end elevation, showing the tip of the cigarette before the head is applied.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a modified form of the invention.

Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 but showing the head in vertical section.

Figure 8 is a detail view'in side elevation of another modification, showing the head in vertical section.

Figure 9 is a bottom plan view of the invention as shown in Fig. 3. l

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral I designates generally the cigarette, said cigarette including a paper wrapper 2. At one end portion, the substantially tubular paper wrapper 2 lsffolded or tucked inwardly on diametrically opposite sides, as at 3, in a manner to provide a tapered tip 4 the free end of which is substantially N-shaped, J as at 5 (see Figure 5). After the tip 4 is thus 'formed it is dipped in wax for sealing the cigarette at this end to prevent the passage of moisture from the tobacco.

It will be noted that the tip 4 is so formed as to provide substantially fiat opposite side Walls 6., Secured by an adhesive on the tip 4 and projecting from the free end thereof is a substantially Y-shaped head carrying element I. The element 1 is formed from a strip of heavy paper folded upon itself in a manner to provide legs 8 which straddle the tip 4 and which are secured to'the substantially flat sides 6 of said tip. After the tip I is applied said tip is dipped in a suitable combustible material in a manner to form an ignitable head 9 thereon.

In the modification shown in Figures 6 and"? of the drawing the element 1 is omitted and an ignitable head H! is applied directly to the free end portion of the tip 4.

In the Figure 8 modification a separate tip ll of Cellophane or other suitable water resisting material is applied to one end portion of the cigarette I. This tip II is folded or formed in a manner similar to the tip 4 and an ignitable head I2 is applied to the free end portion thereof. If desired, the element 1 may be applied to the tip I! for carrying the head I2.

It is believed that the manyadvantages of a cigarette constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood,.and although preferred embodiments of the invention are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. I

What is claimed is:-

1. A cigarette comprising .a wrapper, one end portion of said wrapper including inwardly tucked opposite side portions forming a substantially tapered tip, and an ignitable head on the free end portion of said tip.

2. A cigarette comprising a substantially tapered tip on one end, a substantially Y-shaped element straddling said tip and secured thereto, said element projecting from the free end of the tip, and an ignitable head on the projecting portion of the element. 1,

3. A cigarette comprising a wrapper, one end portion of said wrapper including inwardly tucked portions providing a substantially tapered 5 tip including a substantially N-shaped end, and an ignitable head mounted on the free end portion of said tip.

4. A cigarette comprising a substantially tapered tip on one end including substantially flat sides, a substantially Y-shaped element straddling said tip and including diverging legs secured to the flat sides thereof, said element projecting beyond the free end or the tip, and an ignitable head on the projecting portion of said element.

5. A cigarette comprising a wrapper, one end portion of said wrapper including inwardly,

tucked portions providing a substantially tapered tip including a substantially N- shaped end, said tip further including substantially flat side portions, a substantially U-shaped element straddling the tip and including diverging legs secured to said substantially flat side portions, said element projecting from the free end of the tip, and an ignitable head on the projecting portion of the element.
