As shown in the drawing the pencil comprises afmainor body portion I and a cap portion 2. The outer casinglof the body portion I and cap e portion 2 are, as before stated, of ornamental shape and appearance. In the present instance they are rectangular in cross section as indicated in Fig. 5,-having oppositely disposed walls 3 and 4 arranged parallel to each other, the walls 3 being of somewhat less width than the walls 4 so that in cross section they form substantially an Oblong,

The main or body portion I at its lower end will be provided with the iiattened and 10 tapered ferrul'e-like portion I through which the leadjor marking material 8 may be projected and'retracted at will by any usual form of propelling yand retracting mechanism as shown in vertical cross section in Fig. 3. Preferably the l5 body member I and the cap member 2 will be of the same size in cross section so that when placed in the condition shown in Figs. l and 2, with the members in close contact, they will define two rectangular members of different length, one ac- 2 curately abutting and ycontinuing the marginal boundaries of the other.
It is desirable that the parts shall remain in the position shown inA Figs. 1 and 2 Without any liability of accidental displacement or relative 25 turning movement excepting when itisdesired to impart to the main and cap portions such relative turning movement to actuate the pencil mechanism to either project or retract the lead. For this purpose the cap portion 2 is connected 30 by means of a sliding cylindrical tube 9 and an extension tube I0 to a spirally slotted sleeve II forming a part of the pencil operating mechanism. The tube l0 which is connected to the tube 9 is provided with a slot I2 which engages a 35 ystud I2 carried by the slotted sleeve II, the
turning of which by means of the cap 2 and the connections just described operates the lead propelling and retracting mechanism to project and retract the lead 8 of the pencil. By means 40 ofthe stud and slot connection I2 ,and I2', the cap tubes 9 and IIJ are permitted to have a sliding movement into and out of the body portion I within the limits of the slot and stud connection I2 and I2 without disconnecting the cap 2 from 45 the propelling mechanism. When the cap is Withdrawn aseshown in Figs. 3 and 4, it may be turned about a vertical axis corresponding tothe vertical axis of the body of the pencil, and by means of the spirally slotted tube II cause 50 the lead 8 to be projected beyond the tip of the ferrule-like extension 1 and retracted within the same, all in a manner common to pencils of the type shown.
All of the lead holding and propelling mecha- 55 nism including the tubes 9, I0 and II are enclosed in a main covering tube IIlI within the outer casing of the member I and'xedly connected at its lower end to the xed bearing |02 in which the lower end of the tube II is free to turn, the bearing H12 being secured in xed position in the lower end 'I of the casing. The tubes 9, II) and II are free to turn in the tube IOI and the tubes 9 and I0 have a limited sliding Inove-` ment therein to permit the cap portion to be extended when required as hereinbefore described.
The cap 2 at its lower end is provided with av rectangular flange I3 of a size and shape to accurately fit within the upper open end I4 of the ornamental outer casing of the main body portion I, such flange being bounded by a shoulder I5 which when the cap is tted in the open end IIIV will rest against the shoulder I5 thus producing a registered tting of the cap and main portion of the pencil as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By registered fitting is meant one which insures that the ornamental shape and surface ornamentation as embodied in the cap and body portion will be brought into register with each other and when the flange I3 is inserted in the openV end Ill of the body portion I, because of the rectangular shape in cross section it will ofcourse be locked against any accidental turning and the ornamental features embodied in the two parts will, as before stated, register with each other as indicated. At the same time, when it is desiredv to either propel or retract the marking lead 8, the cap 2 may be pulled out so that the flange I3 is clear of the casing as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and thus placed in position so that it may be turned to operate the pencil mechanism and thus propel and retract the leadas required.Y Y
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pencil may be provided with any usual form of .clip I6, and a watch i? may be mounted in the cap portion 2 as indicated. If. a watch is. embodied in the cap 2,'a usual windingstud I8 will project from one side of the casing of the cap 2. The casings of the main body portion I andthecap 2 will preferably be made of gold, or of a base metal which may be plated if desired.
The operation of the device has been suiciently disclosed in connection with the foregoing description'of its construction and it is believed that and means to lock the cap and main body portion against relative turning movement when the cap portion is in its retracted position and in engagement with the upper end of the main body portion.
