Our invention relates generally to means for cushioning the slamming of a door, and particularly to means of this character which is mounted on the door and occupies a position between that part of the door which ordinarily strikes the jamb in closing, and the jamb itself, in the form of a compressible or shock absorbing pad, and an important object of our invention is to provide simple and effective means of this character which can be constructed in various inexpensive forms. Another important object of our invention is to provide bumper means of the character indicated which is adapted to be mounted on one of the door handles and frictionally engaged therewith ina manner to rotate with the door handle so as to be positioned by the door handle normally in the shock absorbing position.
Another important object of our invention is to provide bumper means of the character indicated above which has a carrying portion securely fastened to the door handle by means of structure already present on the conventional door handle, and whereby the bumper means is positively positioned by reason of the position of the 1' door handle.
Other important objects of our invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration we have shown preferred embodiments of our invention.
In the drawings:-- Figure 1 is a general elevational view of the inner side of-a door showing an embodiment of the invention mounted on the door handle there- Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view and horizontal section showing the relationship of the door, the bumper and the door jamb, and the manner in which the bumper is mounted on the door handle.
Figure 3 is an end or edge elevational view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the bumper per se.
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing'a modified form of bumper.
Figure 7 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through Figure 6 approximately on the line 'l---'! and looking upwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Referringin detail to the drawings, and with particular reference to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 through 4, the numeral I' generally designates the bumper which in .which is inserted in and fastened at one this instance is made of suitable compressible and resilient material, such as rubber and comprises an elongated shank on one end of which is an integrally formed eye 2 which has the opening 6 which frictionally receives the shank portion 3 of the door handle 4 closely adjacent to the inner surface of the door 5. The remaining end of the shank of the bumper has a cross head 1 integrally formed thereon which is adapted to assume, normally, a position between the inner side of the free edge of the door 5 and the opposed face of the door jamb 8 on the door frame 9 as particularly well illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The opening 6 in the eye of the bumper is small enough to produce a strong frictional fit on the shank of the door handle, so that it will be substantially securely mounted thereon and will turn with the door handle when the door handle is turned. The bumper is so positioned on the shank of the door handle that when the door handle is in the normal unoperated position the head 1 will lie in the position shown in full lines in Figure 1 and Figure 2 of the drawings, so that should the door he slammed from an open position, the head 1 of the bumper will absorb the shockand prevent injury to the door and the door jamb as well as reduce the noise ordinarily occurring in the slamming of a door.
Referlng now to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 6 and 7, the numeral ID generally designates the embodiment which in this instance comprises a flat metal spring arm ll end in a resilient compressible material head 7a and has its opposite end 'bent into a coil I2 and of a diameter permitting the telescoping of the shank portion 3a of the door handle 4a thereinto. The
free end of the coil I2 is provided with an opening l3 to receive the set screw M which is normally existent on the door handle for engaging the squared shank l5 of the door handle axle whereby the door handle is secured in place on the axle. The screw I4 is passed through the opening I3 and threaded into the shank 3a, so that the member l I extends exactly in the position required to place the cross head !a in the shock absorbing position relative to the jamb 8d of the door frame 9a and the inner face of the door Set as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, while the door handle 4a is in its normal or initial position. When the door handle 4a is rotated in looking the door to close the same, the bumper will be carried by the motion of the door handle to an inoperative position such as those indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Although we have shown and described herein preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be definitely understood that We do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
