This invention relates to a door stop and more particularly to a combined door cushion and catch, although certain features thereof can be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
It contemplates more especially the provision of a simple, inexpensive and improved door cushion and stop that can be utilized in conjunction with doors that open both parallel as well as angularly to a wall.
Numerous types of door stops have heretofore been proposed, but these are expensive and require modifications in form in order to afford their use with a door that opens parallel to a wall or angularly thereto to serve as a stop therefor. Then, too, the door stops of known construction do not provide for a cushioning effect when the door is swung open at a terrific speed to the end that the'door stop receives an excessive impact without absorbing the shockthrough the medium of the resilient catch.
One object of the present invention is to simplify'the construction and improve the operation of devices of the character mentioned.
Another object is to provide a durable, inexpensive and effective door cushion and catch that is operable in a variety of positions.
Still another object is to provide a resilient door catchthat is complemental to a stop so as to be capable of axial or angular engagement or disengagement.
A further object is to' provide a door stop having a plurality of obstructions for cooperation with a door catch so as to arrest the opening of a door without shock even though such is displaced at an excessive speed.
A still further object is to provide a resilient door catch as co-operable with a door stop having a series of obstructions to absorb the shock of impact irrespective to the speed of door displacement.
Still a further object is to provide a door stop having means co-operable with a resilient catch member in either an angular or axial direction 5 to absorb the shock of impact and to retain the door in an open position.

The structure selected for illustration comprises an elongated stop member II! that is cast 20 or otherwise shaped from metal to define an enlarged base II, in this instance, of rectangular configuration. The base H merges with a tapered boss I2 that terminates in an axially extending elongated shank l 3 which is also tapered, 25 but to a lesser degree than the boss l2 in order to provide an enlarged base II to withstand the strains and impacts that are imparted thereto.
As shown, the shank l3 has an intermediary transverse reinforcing rib l4 that extends around the periphery thereof, but such also serves as an ornamental feature to correspond in design with another transverse peripheral ridge l5 disposed proximate to the free extremity of the shank l3. The transverse peripheral ridge or obstruction l5 5 confronts a much larger peripheral ridge I6 that is spaced forwardly therefrom to define an annular transverse groove I! that serves to receive the catch in its extreme displaced position as will appear more fully hereinafter. 40
Another annular groove 18 is formed forwardly of the peripheral obstruction 16 for initial reception of a catch member which is designed to be displaced over a tapered head 19 formed integrally with the shank l3 with its largest dimension 20 formed adjacent the annular groove [8.
As shown, the head 19 is tapered and converges in the direction of its tip 2| which is sufilciently small to initiate registry with a catch that will be described hereinafter. It is to be noted that the door stop head H! has rounded edges 22 inclined to conform with the tapered configuration thereof and to permit displacement of the catch thereover in most any direction or position. In order to sustain the door stop In or to enable its attachment to a wall, base board, or floor for positioning in the path of a door fastening expedient such as a Wood screw 23 axially extending from the base H in a direction normal to the surface thereof. The fastening expedient 23 is preferably though not essentially formed integral with the door stop I0, and enables the attachment thereof to any suitable support such as the base board 24 that is disposed along the bottom of a wall 25 to serve as a trimming therefor.
In order that a door 26 that is mounted for swinging movement relative to a wall 25, may be brought to a stop and held in an open position, the door catch is secured thereto for cooperation with the stop l0. comprises, in this instance, a substantially U- shaped member 21 which is stamped or otherwise shaped from sheet material to define upstanding and confronting arms 28 and 29 preferably though not essentially formed integral with an intermediate portion or base member 30. As shown, the arms 28 and 29 terminate in inwardly directed and convexly curved extensions 3| which confront each other to define inwardly directed projections that conformin curvature with and serve asa complement of the annular grooves I1 and I8 depending upon the degree of displacement of the door catch 21 over the head IQ of the elongated stop H].
It is to be noted that the arms 28 and 29 of the I catch 21, are resiliently disposed relative to each other so as to be capable of'fiexing and conform with the configuration of the head l9 as well as grooves l1 and I8 of thestop II! for engagement and disengagement therewith. To this end, the door catch 21 isprovided with an aperture 32 in the intermediate or base portion so as to receive afastener such asa wood screw 33 therethrough for attachment of the catch 21 to the door 28 in a position so as to confront the door stop |-0 when displaced to its extreme open position. This can be accomplished and the exact position found by first attaching the door stop ID to the base board 24 of the adjacent door wall within the limit of its confronting extent in an open position. Thereupon, thedoor catch 21 is fitted over the head I9 of the stop I0 so that the arcuate extensions 3| thereof'will engage the groove |1' so as to hold the screw 33 in its proits proper positioning and attachment.

If the degree of displacement is so excessive as to preclude the first peripheral obstruction IE to stop the catch 21 so that its arcuate extensions 3| will absorb the shock owing to their resilient character, further displacement of the door catch 21 thereover will take place and the obstruction I5 will thereupon serve as a stop to lodge the arcuate door catch extensions 3| within the groove H.
In consequence thereof, the door will be stopped and cushioned without any damage or To this end the door catch appreciable noise irrespective of the speed of! dis-- placement and the degree of impact. The: door will not, thereafter, swing freely to its closedi position, but will be retained open until purposely displaced by an attendant who will have to apply sufiicient force to effect the displacement of the catch 21 from the stop l0.
There are numerous occasions wherein a door 26' is mounted to swing open relative to a wall 25' disposed at an angle thereto when the door 26 is in its extreme open position (Figure 4). In order that the door stop l0 and catch 21 may be utilized for such installations; provision is made for the engagement of the catch 21 at an -angle with the door stop I0. In the present embodiment, this is accomplished by providing arcuate notches 34 in the obstructing peripheral ridge IGintermediate the corners thereof. notches 34 substantially conform in curvature with and'serve as a complement of the arcuate cushioning and stopping expedient for doors that open both parallel as well as angularly to a' wall in its open position. A very inexpensive, durable and effective door cushion and stop member has been provided, and is possessed of combined advantages not found in any'of the known devices utilized for the same purpose.
Various changes maybe made in the embod'k ment of the invention herein specifically de-. scribed without departing'from or sacrificingany of the advantages of the invention as'dcflnedin the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, 'a fastener screw formed integral with the said stop member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted'to coact with a spring clip member, an abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining the spring clip therebetween, said abutment ridge having notches to enable angular frictional engagement and retention of said spring clip relative to said stop member head.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, a fastener screw formed integral with the said bolt member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, an abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining said resilient clip therebetween, said abutment ridge having notches to enable the angular frictional engagement and retention of said clip relative to said bolt member head, and another abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member spaced from said first named abutment ridge to serve as a secondary stop for said clip when engaging said stop member head with excessive impact for said first named abutment ridge to halt the displacemen of said spring clip.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, a peripheral abutment ridge encircling said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining the spring clip therebetween, and another abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member spaced from said first named abutment ridge to serve as a secondar; stop for said clip when engaging said bolt member head with excessive impact for said first named abutment ridge to halt the displacement of said spring clip.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, said head being of rectangular configuration, a fastener screw formed integral with the said bolt member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, a peripheral rectangular abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining said resilient clip therebetween, said clip having arcuate extensions for resilient engagement between said head and peripheral abutment along different faces of said tapered head.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, a fastener screw formed integral with the said bolt member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, a peripheral abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining said resilient clip therebetween, said resilient clip member being in the path of said bolt for frictional engagement and disengagement with said bolt member head, and another peripheral abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member spaced from said first named abutment ridge to serve as a secondary stop for said clip when engaging said bolt member head with excessive impact for said first named abutment ridge to halt the displacement of said spring clip.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, a fastener screw formed integral with the said bolt member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, a peripheral abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining said resilient clip therebetween, and said abutment ridge having notches interrupting the continuity thereof to enable angular frictional engagement and retention of said spring clip relative to said bolt member head.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated bolt member comprising a tapered head, a fastener screw formed integral with the said bolt member for axial extension from the end opposite its tapered head, said bolt being adapted to coact with a spring clip member, a peripeharl abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member in spaced relation with its head for frictionally retaining said resilient clip therebetween, said abutment ridge having notches intermediate the extremities thereof to enable the angular frictional engagement and retention of said spring clip relative to said bolt member head, and another abutment ridge on said elongated bolt member spaced from said first named abutment ridge to serve as a secondary stop for said spring clip when engaging said bolt member head with excessive impact for said first named abutment ridge to halt the displacement of said spring clip.
