In combination, an operating shaft, a collar having a cylindrical sleeve fitting over said shaft and having a flange extending radially from said sleeve, another collar having a cylindrical sleeve slidably fitting over said first-mentioned sleeve and having a flange extending radially of its sleeve, segments between said flanges movable towards each other to form a sanding wheel with an axial opening receiving said sleeves and closed at its ends around said sleeves by said flanges, a cam stud on one of said sleeves and a cam slot on the other of said sleeves for drawing said collars together when rotated relatively, said cam element being closed off from dirt due to operation of the wheel by said shaft, collar flanges and the inner periphery of said wheel axial opening, there being a connection between one of said wheel segments and one of said collars for positively rotating the latter by rotation of said segment about said shaft.

In a sanding wheel unit arranged for application to a through shaft, a pair of sleeves each slidable over the shaft and arranged for telescoping engagement with each other independently of their relatively axial rotation, means on said sleeves functioning independently of the shaft to which they are. applied for moving the sleeves axiallyof each other when they are rotated relative to each other, there being radially extending collars on said sleeves, and sanding wheel forming segments mounted on the outer of said sleeves and arranged to be gripped between said collars when said sleeves are moved towards each other. a

In a sanding wheel unit arranged for, application to a through shaft, a pair of sleeves each slidable over the'shaft and arranged for telescoping engagement with each other independently of their relatively axial rotation, one of said sleeves having a slot inclined longitudinally thereof and the other of said sleeves having a 'pin projecting into said slot whereby said sleeves may be moved axially of each other when they are rotated relative to each otherand independently of the rotation of the shaft, there being radially extending collars on said sleeves, and sanding wheel forming segments mounted on the outer of said sleeves and arranged to be gripped between said collars when said sleeves are moved towards each other.
