My invention relates to firearms for killing cattle, horses, pigs and other animals, and it primarily has for its object to provide an instrument by means of which the killing of such animals may be efiected in a more humane and clean way than has heretofore been accomplished.
Further, the invention has for its objects to provide a gun which will not jump or kick back when shot; to provide a gun which may be used with either rim-fire or central-fire shells; to provide a gun whose cocking pin is provided with a roller bearing; to provide a gun whose cocking pin operates the firing pin; to provide a gun with means whereby the timing of the firing may be adjusted at will; to provide a gun whose cocking and firing mechanisms are enclosed in a weather proof case; to provide the gun with a shield to prevent injury to the user; and to provide a gun with a specially designed handle to facilitate handling the gun and to serve as a means by which the gun may be hung on a hook or nail when not in use.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a gun whose shell holding member is shielded or protected all around when the parts are in the firing position; to provide a gun that cannot be accidentally discharged, but can only be discharged when the handles are pressed together; to provide means continuously tending to keep the gun open at all times.
Again it is an object to provide a gun of the character described which can be easily and cheaply made, utilizing portions of salvaged small rifle barrels, for the barrel of the gun.
Further, it is an object to provide means to eject the spent shell from the mouth of the barrel.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, and then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

In the drawing in which like parts have the same reference number in all the figures, I represents the lower jaw which has ears 2 countersunk into the handle 3 and secured thereto by rivets 4.
The jaw I is bored and threaded to receive the inner end of the barrel 6, the mouth of which is recessed at I for the flange or rim 8 of the shell 9. The jaw I is laterally slotted at ID to receive the extractor block I I which enters a slot in the barrel and has a continuation of the recess I for the shell rim. A pin or rod I2 having a push button I3 serves as a means to hold the extractor in place and as a means by which it may be moved to eject the shell.
A guard carrier I4 is secured by set screws I6 to the barrrel 6 and carries a guard I5 as shown.
The upper jaw I! also has ears I8 for attachment by rivets to the handle I9.
The handles 3 and I9 may be pivoted at as crossed handles or any other suitable c0nnection may be made.
The jaw H has a boss 2| and is recessed at 22 to receive the mouth end of the barrel 6 when the parts are in the firing position and thereby form an effective guard and retainer for the shell.
The jaw I1 has a bore 23 for the firing pin 53 and a recess or guide bore 25 for the firing pin holder 26.
The timing pin 21 operates in a bore 24 and carries, adjustably, a roller carrying rod 28. The rod 28 is threaded into the pin 21 and held in its adjusted position by a jam nut 30. At its extreme end the rod 28 carries a roller 29 to ride on the face of the lower jaw I as the jaws are being closed together.
The timing pin 21 includes a guide rod 3i which operates in a hole in the bridge piece 32 which is secured by screws 38 and M respectively to the posts 36 and 39.
Springs 33 and 35 respectively serve continu ously to urge the members 21 and 26 forwardly.
The firing pin holder also has a guide rod 34 passed through a hole in the bridge plate 32.
The post 36 has a threaded connection 31 with the boss 2! and the post 39 has a similar connection 40 with the boss. The posts 36 and 39 are rigidly held in place.
The timing pin carries a resilient or spring metal plate 42 secured rigidly to it by screws 43. This plate 42 overlies the members 39, 26 and 36 and lies flat against the same when in the normal or at rest position.
The post 36 has a cam surface 44 for moving the plate 42 away from the face of the member 26 at the instant the firing pin is to be released.
The firing pin holder 26 carries a plunger 45' which is held forward by a spring 48 held in a block 46 having a recess 41 for the plunger, a cross pin 52 serving to hold the plunger from being pushed in too far.
The plunger spring is retained by a plate 49 secured by a screw 50 and prevented from swivelling on the screw by means of a fixed pin 5| The firing pin 53 is screwed into the end of the holder 26 in a position to fire either a rim-fire shell or a center-fire shell as may be desired.
A casing 54 having a bayonet slot 55 is secured by a screw 56 to the boss 2| and serves to protect the working parts against the weather.
A flexible (preferably leather) guard cover 5! is provided with flaps to fold around the casing 54 and holder 14, the ends of the flaps overlapping and being provided with snap fasteners 59. A portion 58 of the cover 51 is cut away so as not to interfere with the operation of the gun.
The handle [9 is formed with a finger guard 60 and constitutes a convenient loop by means of which the implement may be hung on a nail or hook when not in use.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when in the normal or inactive position the parts will assume the position of Figs. 1 and 5, the spring 33 and roller 29 holding the jaws open.
When it is desired to use the gun a shell 9 is placed in position (Fig. 2) and the handles 3-|9 squeezed togetherv This causes the timing pin 21 to be pushed in, which moves plate 42 into edge contact with plunger 45 and retracts firing pin, until cam 44 is engaged and lifts plate 42 over end of plunger 45 whereupon spring 35 immediately forces firing pin outwardly to strike the shell 9 and cause its charge to explode.
Upon releasing the pressure on the handles spring 33 will open the jaws again, whereupon by pushing on button I3 ejector II will raise the shell 9 so it can be taken out and a new one put in.
From the foregoing description taken with the accompanying drawing it is thought the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art.
I further desire it understood that while the drawing shows, and this specification describes but one embodyment of the invention, the same is to be taken for purposes of illustration and not limitation as many changes in the details of con struction and arrangement of parts can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles for moving them toward and from one another, a barrel carried by one jaw and a firing pin and pin timing and. releasing mechanism carried by the other jaw and means operable upon the movement of the jaws together for first energizing the firing pin and then releasing it upon completion of the movement of the jaws together.
2. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles for moving them toward and from one another, a barrel carried by one jaw, an extractor carried by the same jaw, said barrel and said extractor having a common shell flange receiving groove, and means for operating the extractor, the other jaw having a pair of fixed guides spaced apart, a firing pin holder located in the space between said guides and having a guide rod, a bridge piece secured to the ends of said guides and having a hole through which said guide rod passes, a spring on said guide rod for actuating the firing pin, a firing pin carried by said firing pin holder,
. a timing pin, means on said other jaw for guiding said timing pin, said means including a timing pin guide bore in said other jaw, a guide rod on said timing pin and a hole in said bridge piece, a spring continuously tending to force said timing pin outwardly towards said first jaw, a roller carrying rod secured to said timing pin, and means actuated by said timing pin for cooking and then releasing said firing pin holder, as said jaws are brought together.

bridge piece secured to the ends of said guides and having a hole through which saidguide rod passes, a spring on said guide rod for actuating the firing pin, a firing pin carried by said firing pin holder, a timing pin, means on said other jaw for guiding said timing pin, said means including a timing pin guide bore in said other jaw, a guide rod on said timing pin and a hole in said bridge piece, and a spring continuously tending to force said timing pin outwardly toward said first jaw, and. a roller carrying rod secured to said timing pin, said timing pin having a springy plate, said firing pin holder having a plunger engageable by said plate to cock said firing pin and a fixed cam engageable by said plate on completion of the cooking movement, for disengaging said plate from said plunger to release the firing pin holder, and a guard carrier with a guard secured to said barrel, and a guard member fitted over said jaws and secured to said casing and to said guard carrier.
5. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles pivoted together for moving the jaws toward and from one another, a barrel carried by one jaw, a firing pin holder longitudinally movably carried by the other jaw, a spring for actuating the firing pin holder to project the firing pin to engage a cartridge located in the entrant end of the barrel, a timing pin carried by said other jaw and longitudinally movable, guides for said firing pin holder and for said timing pin, a spring to move said timing pin in one direction, said timing pin being movable in the other direction by the closure of said jaws together, a firing pin plunger carried by said firing pin holder, a plate carried by said timing pin to engage said plunger as said timing pin is moved in said other direction to cock the firing pin, and a cam on one of said guides and engageable by said plate when said firing pin has been cooked, to release said plate from said plunger to permit said firing pin to function as described.
6. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles pivoted together for moving the jaws toward and from on another, a barrel carried by one jaw, a firing pin holder longitudinally movably carried by the other jaw, a spring for actuating the firing pin holder toproject the firing pin to engage a cartridge located in the entrant end of the barrel, a timing pin carried by said other jaw and longitudinally movable, guides for said firing pin holder and for said timing pin, a spring to move said timing pin in one direction, said timing pin being movable in the other direction by the closure of said jaws together, a firing pin plunger carried by said firing pin holder, a, plate carried by said timing pin to engage said plunger as said timing pin is moved in said other direction to cock the firing pin, and a cam on one of said guides and engageable by said plate when said firing pin has been cocked, to release said plate from said plunger to permit said firing pin to function as described, said timing pin having an adjustable roller carrying rod with lock nut for purposes described.
7. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles for moving them toward and from one another, a barrel carried by one jaw, an extractor carried by the same jaw, said barrel and said extractor having a common shell flange receiving groove, and means for operating the extractor, the other jaw having a pair of fixed guides spaced apart, a firing pin holder located in the space between said guides and having a guide rod, a bridge piece secured to the ends of said guides and having a hole through which said guide rod passes, a spring on said guide rod for actuating the firing pin, a firing pin carried by said firing pin holder, a timing pin, means on said other jaw for guiding said timing pin, said means including a timing pin guide bore in said other jaw, a guide rod on said timing pin and a hole in said bridge piece, and a spring continuously tending to force said timing pin outwardly toward said first jaw and a roller carrying rod secured to said timing pin, said timing pin having a springy plate, said firing pin holder having a plunger engageable by said plate to cook said firing pin and a fixed cam engageable by said plate on completion of the cocking movement, for disengaging said plate from said plunger to release the firing pin holder.
8. In a cattle gun two jaws with handles for moving them toward and from one another, a barrel carried by one jaw and a firing pin and pin timing and releasing mechanism carried by the other jaw and means operable upon the movement of the jaws together for first energizing the firing pin and then releasing it upon completion of the movement of the jaws together, a tubular body surrounding said barrel and spaced from the wall thereof, means at the ends of said tubular body for closing the ends of the space around the barrel thereby to leave a dead air chamber surrounding the barrel, and means securing said tubular body to the barrel.
