Patented Apr. 2, 1940 fi'i'i'S FQE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in weapons for use particularly by police officers and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character in the form of a combination club, black jack or the like and firearm.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide, in a combination weapon of the aforementioned character comprising a spring projected plunger for actuating a firing pin, novel means for releasably securing said plunger in cocked position.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a combination weapon of the character described comprising a construction and arrangement which is such that the device may be expeditiously loaded and the discharged shell removed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a combination Weapon of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of a combination weapon constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the device cocked and secured by the safety.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the device.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line l-G of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a detail View, looking at the inner or rear end of the barrel.
Figure 6 is a view in side elevation of the barrel 45 and head thereon, showing the rear end portion thereof broken away in section.
Figure 7 is a top plan view of an intermediate portion of the device, showing the trigger cooked with the safety device in released or inoperative position, the guard being shown in horizontal section.
Figure 8 is a detail view in perspective of the firing pin.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the instrument through the medium of which the device is cocked.
7 Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially tubular housing I of suitable metal. Formed longitudinally in the upper portion of the tubular housing l is a slot 2. A lateral notch or recess 3 communicates with the slot 2 at the rear end portion thereof.
Threadedly mounted in the forward end portion of the tubular housing I is a removable barrel 4. The rear portion of the barrel 4 has formed therein a recess 5 for the reception of a spring pressed latch 5 which is pivotally mounted on the forward end portion of the housing I. The reference numeral '1 designates a cartridge which is mounted in the barrel 4. Threadedly mounted on the barrel t is a substantially bulbous removable head 8 which may be of any suitable heavy material. 7
Also threadedly mounted in the forward portion of the tubular housing I is a block or plug 9. The block or plug 9, it will be observed, is spaced from the rear end of the barrel t. Mounted in the tubular housing 1 immediately adjacent the rear'of the block or plug 9 is a guide 10. The reference numeral i i designates a firing pin which extends slidably through an opening provided therefor in the block or plug 9. The firing pin H includes a body or member i2 on its rear end which is slidable in the guide it. The member l2 has formed therein a notch I3 having inclined end walls, as best seen in- Fig. 8 of the drawings. The notch l3 accommodates the pointed end of the retaining screw it which is threadedly mounted. in the guide H! for limiting the movement of the firing pin H.
Threadedly mounted in the rear end portion of the tubular housing l is a coupling !5. Anchored in the coupling i5 is a handle 16 in the form of a flexible steel cable having a head i! on its rear end. Slidably mounted on the handle i6 is a ring 58 of suitable material, such as leather. Pivotally mounted on the ring i8 is a wrist loop it which is also preferably of leather.
Mounted for longitudinal sliding movement in the tubular housing I is a plunger 20 which is adapted to actuate the firing pin H. A coil spring 2| projects the plunger 2!]. The forward end portion of the coupling i5 is socketed, as at 22, for the reception of the coil spring 2|. Mounted on the plunger 20 and rising therefrom is a pin or-trigger 23 which is operable in the slot 2 and engageable in the notch 3 for releasably securing said plunger in cocked position. This is illustrated to advantage in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings.
Pivotallymountedonthetubular housing I adjacent the rear end portionoftheslot 2 and the notch 3 is a safety latch 24. The reference numeral designates an operating bar for the safety latch 24 which is pivotally and slidably mounted on the tubular housing 5, said operating bar 25 being pivotally connected to one end of said safety latch 24, as at 26. The bar 25 has formed therein a longitudinal slot 2"! which accommodates a securing screw 28. A roughened thumb button 29 is provided on the bar 25 for actuating same. The free end of the latch 24 is engageable with the trigger or pin 23 for positively securing same in the notch 3. A guard 30, which is substantially in the form of a forwardly tapering hood on the upper portion of the tubular housing l, shields the trigger or pin 23, the safety device, etc. The rear portion of the guard 39 is open in a manner to accommodate the thumb of the hand which holds the device.
In Figlue 9 of the drawings, the reference numeral 3! designates the bar which is used for cooking the plunger 20. Toward this end, the bar 3! is provided on one end with an enlarged eye 32 for the reception of the trigger or pin 23 for connecting said bar thereto. Loosely mounted on the other end of the bar 36 is a conventional key ring 33.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the latch 6 is disengaged from the barrel 4 to permit said barrel to be removed from the housing i for the insertion of the cartridge 1 in the breech of said barrel. The barrel 4 with the cartridge '1 therein, is then threaded into the forward end portion of the housing I. When the barrel is screwed home the latch 6 enters the recess 5 and locks said barrel. The plunger 26 is retracted against the tension of the coil spring 21 by connecting the rod 3! to the trigger or pin 23 and pulling same rearwardly in the slot 2 and then swinging said trigger or pin into the notch a. The bar 25 is then moved rearwardly through the medium of the thumb button 29 for swinging the safety latch 24 from the position shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Thus, the trigger or pin 23 is positively secured in cocked position in the notch 3. The construction and arrangement is such that the safety latch 24 moves past dead center when it is swung to operative position. By tightening or loosening the screw 28 the movement or action of the bar 25 may be regulated as desired. To fire the cartridge l, the bar 25 is moved forwardly beneath the guard 3th through the medium of the thumb button 29 for swinging the safety latch 24 to the position shown in Fig. '7 of the drawings. After this has been done the trigger or pin 23 may still be conveniently held in the notch 3 with the thumb. Now, to fire the weapon it is only necessary to swing the trigger or pin 23 out of the notch 3 thus releasing the phuiger 20 and permitting the coil spring 2| to function by driving said plunger forwardly. The plunger 20 strikes the member [2 and drives the firing pin II forwardly against the rear end of the cartridge 7. By grasping the flexible handle I6 in an obvious manner the device may be conveniently used as a club, black jack or the like, the head 8 constituting the striking end. The wrist loop l9 prevents loss of the weapon, as will be readily understood. Also, this loop I9 is connected to the handle IS in a manner to readily adjust itself thereon. Referring again to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be observed that the coupling l5 has formed therein openings for the reception of solder, as at 34, for anchoring the handle I6 therein.
It is believed that the many advantages of a combination weapon constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A weapon of the class described comprising a tubular housing, said housing having a longitudinal slot therein and further having a notch therein communicating with the slot at the rear end portion thereof, a removable barrel, for the reception of a cartridge, mounted on one end of the housing, a spring projected plunger operable in the housing, a firing pin in the housing operable by said plunger, a pin on said plunger operable in the slot and engageable in the notch for securing said plunger in cocked position, a safety latch pivotally mounted on the housing and engageable with the second named pin for securing same in the notch, and a manually operable bar pivotally and slidably mounted on the housing and pivotally connected to one end of said safety latch for actuating same.
