, claims. (ci. 411-126) This invention. relates to improvements inthe packaging of paper safety matches and has particular reference to a novel type of package wherein provision is made for increasing the ap- .5' peal and to stimulate the curiosity of the user of such a package as to the nature of certain advertising or printed matter appearingon the 15 vertising matter which is a factor in enablingdealers in tobacco products to distribute such matches free of charge to their customers.
It is an object of the present invention to increase the advertising appeal and lavailable adsuch paper'matches by prosired character printed on the matches of the packet, lor on special sheets provided 'for that purpose, in two or more contrasting primary colors whereby a single surface, bearing such indicia may contain a plurality of messages or designs, which maybe selectively viewed by presenting the colored translucent or transparent panels 4in registration therewith'. Thus a design printed in red ink may be readily viewed through a green panel and, conversely, a design printed in green ink may be clearly viewed by presenting the red panel.
' It is thus another obiect of the invention to provide a packet of paper matches wherein a plurality ofc messages or designs are provided upon a single surface, and to render such mes- 40 sages or designs selectively visible. by the provision of ap carried panels of such coloration that when one of said panels is placed over said surface, one of such designs or messages may be viewed and understood andA when another of said panels is placed over the indicia bearing surface,
the other of said messages or designs will become viewable.
For -a further understanding of the invention, .0 reference is to be had to the following descrip-.- tion and the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is -a perspective view of a packet -of paper matches formed 'in accordance with the present invention;
55 Fig. 2 is a similar view disclosing the front panel-carrying apsof the packet in an open position; Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the line III- III of Fig. 2;
vFig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view gril tle plane indicated by the line IV-IV of Fig. 5 is a front elevation disclosing a, design- 'appearing on one of the indicia bearing surfaces 10 of the packet when viewed through one of the aps;
Fig. 6 is a similar yiew showing said surface when viewed through the other of said aps;
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of a modified form 15 of the invention; Fig. 8 is a similar` view of. a still further modied form.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, and especially to the form of the invention dis- 20 closed in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, a packet of paper matches is indicated at I. -The ,packet comprises a paper cover formed to includey integral. back, side and bottom walls 2, 3 and 4 respectively, the bottom wall terminating along its for- 25 ward edge in a short upstanding abrasive receiving wall 5. Also, integrally formed with the forward edges of the side walls 3- are pivotally orv hingedly movable front walls or flaps 6, each of which possesses a width substantially equal 30 to that of the back wall 2, the said flaps extending from the upper edge of the wall 5 to the top of the packet. In this instance, the packet contains three parallel rows a, b and c of upright paper matches 1, the said rows being spaced by 35 'separating sheets 8. The matches 1 and the sheets 8 are preferably held in the packet by means of ametallic staple 9 which passes through the wall 5, the lower base portions of the matches 1, the sheets 8 and, are clinched upon the back 40 wall 2, thereby holding the several parts of the packet together.
In carrying out the invention, advertising matter or other-forms of printed indicia, disclosed at I0 are printed in contrasting primary colors 45 on the front surface of each row of the matches 1 and also on the separating sheets 8. Thus, two or more messages may be appliedto each of these surfaces. These messages are separately viewable kby providing the flaps B with openings l I, which are covered by means of substantially transparent or translucent panels I2 and I2' which correspond in dimensions to] the indicia I0 on each of the aforementioned: surfaces.
Thus as .shown in Fig."6, when the ap dered clearl carrying thel pane'lhl! is that is, when the vpanel I2 is brought 'into registration or juxtaposition with the indicia III-appearing on the matches 'i 'or the sheets s, the design or indicia indicated at n in Figs wiu be viewable.
Por instance, should the panel i2 possess a green color, the indicia Il `printed'in red will be viewable. `Again, as shown in Fig. 5, should the Mp4 bearing the panel I2' I be brought into registration withl said indicia containing surraces, the design indicated at M willbe rendered visible. This may be done by coloring the panelo i2 red, so that the message printed in gren on the matchA and3 sheet surfaces may be rendiscernible. From an advertising A standpoint, -it will be--seen that after the row oi' matches a has .been completely utilized, the
message on the iront eet, normally disposed between the rows of matches a and b, may be brought into registration with the panels I2 and Y I2'. When this sheet 'is torn from the packet,
' -a message printed on the irot surface7 of the row b'of matches may then be utilized and'ai'ter this row has been exhausted-the secondsheet, zsjnormally positioned betweentherowsb and e -o! matches, will be presented to view. .When the second separating sheet is torn out, or otherwise removed fromthe packet, the indicia appearing on the front surfaces of the matches comprising the! may be registered with' the panels l2 an on )the 'imder layers complete until itis observed through the panels I2 and We' Another variation 'of my.invention Vbeen disclosed'in Fig. 'I wherein the paper packet of Vmatches indicated at Il is of conventional cori'- iiguration with theexoeption that therel is vided a pair of irontiiaps I6 and I1 which con- 'stitute integral extensions of the back wall la olf'the packet. The nap extensions I8 and I'I are 10 provided with the contrastingly colored transparent translucent panels I 2 and |21'. Similarly, in Fig. 8, the ilap Il'is integrally formed with the upper portion oi the abrasive receiving wall tu, while the ilap Ll' forms an integral continuation of the back wall 2b.
What is claimed is: l
having a back and a pair of relatively movable iront sections, a group or paper matches flatly arranged within said cover andbearing on their' outer surfaces indiciaA printed in contrasting primary colors, and 'substantially t or translucent panels-of corresponding color positloned in registration with openings formedV in the movablei'ronsections Jof said cover and disposed i'or selective-juxtaposition 'with the indicia appearing on said matches.
2. In a'pacEet ofV paper matches, a par Vof .relatively movable cover sections, and divided 'Y 1. A paper match packet comprisinga cover f- 35 an elementu oi' novelty and mechanical appeal 'which will stimulate the curiosityof theuser,

3. A paper match packet comprising a cover .having a back and a pair o! relatively movable front sections, 13. plurality of rows of paper matches arranged fvithin said cover, spacing sheets between adjoining rows, said rowsV of 40 matches andsaid4 spacingsheets bearing a plu rality oi' messages printedjin contrasting colors and in overlapping relationship, and substantially transparent or translucent panels of corresponding colors carried by saidtront sections and 45 disposed for selective registration with said mes sages. i,

Howtever, in a varlationof my invention.' the matches and the sheets 8 may be-removally received within the cover section and the latter thus rendered adapti able for more extended and permanent use,
