This invention relates to an improvement in dispensing receptacles, as, for example, an oil or fuel can.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a dispensing receptacle with a novel form of pouring spout, one which may be advantageously employed for pouring a relatively large stream of liquid from the receptacle into a large opening of another container or which may be employed advantageously for pouring a small and well defined stream into a restricted or smaller opening of some other receptacle.
A further object is to provide a dispensing receptacle having a pouring spout of this character and which makes provision of the protection of all of the elements of the spout during handling and shipping and at other times.
A still further object is to provide a pouring spout which provides for an effective seal of the spout when desired.
Another object is to provide a pouring spout having these advantages and which is simple and durable in its construction, reliable, effective and. convenient in operation, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a dispensing container equipped with a pouring spout embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in vertical cross section illustrating the multiple spout and removable cap construction embodying the present invention;
Figure 3 is a detail view in side elevation of the smaller pouring spout;
Figure 4 is a view thereof in end elevation;
Figure 5 is a View in side elevation of the combined protective and closure cap;
Figure 6 is a view thereof in end elevation; and
Figure '7 is a fragmentary detail View in section on an enlarged scale illustrating particularly the interengaged threaded sleeve formations of the two spouts and cap.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates a dispensing container which may be of any suitable construction and the top 2 of which is provided with an upwardly and outwardly curving relatively large pouring spout 3. The spout 3 is provided at its outer marginal edge with an annular lip 4 which is transversely rounded to provide a gasket seat. This lip 4 may be of sheet metal appropriately curved and suitably secured to the spout 3 and it also may be integral with a threaded sleeve 5 closely fitted on the outer periphery of the spout 3 and providing a thread thereon.
A relatively smaller spout designated generally at 6 is provided and has a large threaded cylindrical portion or sleeve 7 adapted to be interthreaded with the sleeve portion 5 of the large spout. One end of this threaded cylinder or sleeve 6 is opened to adapt it to be assembled with the sleeve 5 of the spout 3 but the other end 7 is partially closed by a transversely extending wall structure 8, the center of which is apertured and has an integral and restricted pouring nipple 9. When the parts 6, 8 and Q are assembled with the spout 3 there is provided a dispensing container with a relatively small pouring spout or nipple 9 so that the contents of the container may be conveniently poured into the small openings of other receptacles or containers.
When the small pouring spout is detached from the spout 3 there is present a large pouring spout which may be conveniently used for rapidly dispensing relatively large quantities of the liquid contents of the container l into other containers or receptacles having large inlet openings.
To provide for the protection and closure of the spouts when handling or shipping a combined protective and sealing cap I 0 is provided. This member ID also has a threaded sleeve formation l l adapted to be interthreaded with the threads I of the smaller pouring spout and has its outer end closed by an imperforate head I2, a portion of which may be in the form of a hexagon or other non-circular shape as designated at l3 so that a tool may be used for screwing or unscrewing the cap. The outer end Wall of the cap is in the form of a fiat plate or disc [4.
A gasket I5 is provided between the body portion 8 of the small spout and the gasket seat provided by the lip 4. Similarly, a gasket I6 is propouring spout but also completely surrounds and protects this element.
While I have shown and described one construction in which the invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that this construction has been selected merely for the purpose of illustration or example and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A dispensing receptacle having a relatively large pouring spout, said pouring spout being externally threaded, a smaller spouthaving a sleeve portion, opposed inner and outer surfaces of said sleeve being threaded internally and externally respectively and said inner threads being adapted to be screwed onto the external threads of the pouring spout, said smaller spout having a restricted pouring nipple, and a removable cap for said nipple having a threaded formation interengageable with the external threads of the sleeve portion of the smaller spout.
2. A dispensing receptacle having a relatively large pouring spout, said pouring spout being externally threaded, a smaller spout having a sleeve portion, opposed inner and outer surfaces of said sleeve being threaded internally and externally respectively, said inner threads being-adapted to be screwed onto the external threads of the pouring spout, said smaller spout having a restricted pouring nipple, and a removable cap for said nipple having a threaded formation interengageable With the external threads of the sleeve portion ofthe smaller spout, there being gaskets interposed between the spouts and between the cap and the pouring nipple.
3. A dispensing container comprising a relatively large pouring spout, a smaller spout having a sleeve portion detachably connected to'the large spout and having a restricted pouring nipple, and a protective cap adapted to completely enclose and surround the small pouring spout and having a portion adapted to seal the restricted pouring nipple, said cap including a sleeve formation overlying and detachably connected to the sleeve portion of the smaller pouring spout.
4. A dispensing container comprising a large pouring spout, a small pouring spout and a combined closure and protective cap, both of said spouts and said cap having releasably engaged and overlying sleeve formations.

A dispensing container comprising a large pouring spout, a small pouring spout and a combined closure and protective cap, said spouts and said cap having releasably engaged and overlying sleeve formations, said large spout having a gasket seat, a gasket on said seat, said small spout having a surface adapted to compress said gasket into sealing engagement with said seat and itself, and a gasket between the cap and the small spout.
6. A dispensing receptacle having a relatively large pouring spout provided at its outer marginal edge with a rounded lip forming a gasket seat and also having threads on its outer periphery, a relatively smaller spout comprising an enlarged sleeve portion having opposed inner and outer surfaces thereof threaded, said sleeve being dimensionedfor interengagement with the threads of the large spout, an apertured transverse body plate connected with the outer end of the sleeve and a relatively restricted pouring nipple at the ed portion of the sleeve of the small spout and 0 also having an imperiorate outer head enclosing the pouring nipple and provided with a gasket engaging surface, and a gasket between saidsurface and outer marginal edge of the nipple.
7. A dispensing receptacle having a relatively large pouring spout provided with threads on its outer periphery, a relatively smaller spout including an enlarged threaded sleeve interengaged with the threads of the large spout, an apertured transverse body plate connected with the'outer end of the sleeve and a relatively restricted pouring nipple projecting from said body plate and overlying said aperture, and a closure cap having a threaded sleeve interengageable with and overlying the threaded sleeve of the small spout and also having an imperforate outer head enclosing and cooperable with said pouring nipple.
8. A dispensing receptacle having a relatively large pouring spout, said spout being provided With a screw-threaded portion, a relatively smaller pouring spout having a threaded sleeve portion dimensioned to operatively engage the threaded portion of the larger spout, and a protective cap completely surrounding the smaller pouring spout and having a sleeve formation dimensioned to engage the sleeve formation of the smaller spout in overlapping engagement with the threaded portion of thelarger pouring spout.
