This Vinvention relates'to a chair andv more particularly to a construction whereby the chair may be converted into a step ladder, and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.
`It is an object kof the invention to provide a chair which may be quickly and readily converted from a chair to a step ladder or vice versa, of few moving parts and which will be rigid and solid in either of its positions of adjustment.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a structure of the kind stated in Vwhich it is not necessary to dismantle any portion of the structure in order that the chair may b-e moved to form either the chair or ladder. Y
VAdditional objects, advantages and features of invention will be Vapparent from the following description consideredY in conjunctionfwith the Y accompanyingdrawing, wherein Y clearly apparent as the description proceeds.
, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, shown in the form of a chair.
, Figure 2 is a front view thereof.
VFigure 3 is a side elevation of the invention, the parts having been moved to provide a step ladder.` y
Figure 4V is a rear elevation thereof.
'There is illustrated, generally, a chair Ill, a back structure II comprising a pair of upright members I2, connected by a plurality of transverse struts I3. As may be seen in Figure 1, the struts I3 are connected between the uprights at an angle so that when the device is converted into a step-ladder, the struts I3 will Vhave a position with relation to the uprightsso as to define the steps of the ladder. This will be more A pair of front legs I4 are provided, connected 'intermediate their height by a flat rung I5. llihe rung I5 comprises rearwardly extending rungs I6, pivoted as at I1 to respective uprights I2.
A seat I8 is pivoted as at I9 to the upper ends of the front legs I4, and links 20 are'pivotally connected at one end as at 2| to respective uprights I2, the other end of the links 20 being pivoted to the seatframe 22 as at 23. The frame 22 is preferably undercut as at 24 to accommodate the links 20, and in the position of the parts e `when* employed as a chair, the links bear upon the under portionof the slots, thereby affording rigidity to the chair. The seat I8 may be suit.
` ably reinforced by members 25 and 26 suitably secured to the under face of the seat. V Y Each upright I2 has av laterally 4extended lug Y 28 positioned adjacent the upper ends of the uprights, and the frame members 22 have provided in their free ends anotch. 28, the notches co` operating with the lugs in a manner presentlyto` be described.
With the device set up as a chair as shown in Figure 1, and it is desiredto convert the device 5 f into a ladder, it is only necessary to hold the back of the chair with one hand, and with the other hand the seat is lifted, thegseat pivoting on the front. legs I 4, by virtue of pivots I9. VThe seat Yi8 is raised until the notches 28 register with re# 10 spective lugs 2l so as to seat therein. In such position of the parts, the uprights I2 will beinclined in a direction toward the front legs, rand the struts I3 thus form the steps of the ladder.v The links 2E! serve to prevent collapse of the de- 15 vice as well as afford rigidity. Y
While I have shown and described a preferred -V embodiment of the invention, this is by way of illustration only and I consider as my own all such variations in structure as fairly fall within 2O the scope of the appended claims.
I claimzfvl. A combined chair andstep-ladder comprisling upright members including a plurality of 'ber having notches for registry with respective lugs of the uprights in one position of the parts.
2. A combined chair and step-ladder compris-A 35 ing upright members having step members con# nected therebetween, a pairl of front leg members, the front legs having a rung memberY extended rearwardly therefrom and pivotally connected to respective upright members, a yseat member in- 40 cluding side frame members, said f rame'mem-fV bers being pivotally connected to the upper ends of the front leg members, each of the frame mem-` bers having a slot formed upon the under face thereof, a link member pivoted at one end to re- 45 spective uprights at a point slightly below the pivot of the front legs, the other end of the links being pivoted to the seat, the links normally occupying a position within and abutting the basev of the slot, a laterally extendedlug on each upright 50 adjacent the upper Vends thereof, and the free ends of the frame members having a notch for reception of respective lugs, in one position of
