IMPROVEMENT IN, FENCE-POSTS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLlAM H. WHIT TIER, of Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

Thisinvention relates to metallic fence-posts, having for its object to simplify the construction and operation of the same and render them more effective in use; and it consists in the main post having the twisted point, and in having the braces pivoted to the post, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the brace in different positions; and Fig. 3 is a view of the brace.

A represents the post proper, made preferably of any iiat metallic substance, and hav'- ingI upon either of its edges the notches a., adapted to receive the wire of a wire fence. The lower portion of the post is provided with atwisted point, b, to prevent any side motion ofthe post. At a suitable distance from the lower end of the post are pivoted, by means of a bolt or rivet, c, the curved angular braces B. These braces are made of any dat metal, and fastened upon either side of the post. Near the point of pivot they are given a half twist, allowing suicient of the flat portion near the point of pivot to allow the braces to be moved freely up and down. The opposite end ofthe brace is provided with a sharp point, d, adapted to be driven in the ground. At a suitable distance from this point the brace is bent downward at an angle, and the part so bent downward is given a slight curvature, as shown at e, Fig. l.

In operation the post is driven into the ground, the braces being in the position as shown in Fig. 2. When the post is driven in to the required depth the braces B are, in turn, driven in until the points d rest against the twisted portion a of the post A, and the Whole is thereby firmly held in position.

By this arrangement it will be seen that a simple and very effective fence-postis furnished, one that will prove effective and durable in use, and not liable to get out of repair.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

l. A metallic fence-post consisting of the post A, having pivoted thereto the braces B, whereby the said braces, being pivoted to the post, are adapted to be driven into the ground after the post has been driven down, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A metallic fence-post consisting of the post A, having twisted base a., braces B, pivoted to the post, having curved angular portions c and points d, for the purposes set forth.
