Referring to the drawings the letter B designates the buck or fixed pressing element which is mounted on the frame F above the usual table T,
and the letter I-I designatesvthe head or movable pressing element connected to the forward end of the lever L, which is Qfulcrumedat 8 on the ex- 7 tension 9 of the frame. The rear end of lever L is provided with a counterweight W. The nu- 4 meral 40 designates generally a connection 'between the lever L and the main or rear toggle presently described. The construction, arrangement, and function of the connection I is disclosed in detail in my Patent No. 1,992,342 of February 26, 1935. V v The lower member of the connection I 0 is pivotally connected at. to the upper link I2 of the main or rear toggle, which link is pivotally connected at l3 to the lower long links I 4, which are fulcrumed at I5 on the frame F. The forward end of the link 2| is pivoted on the shaft or stud l8. The link ZI'may, if desired, be provided with extensions 25 receiving screws 26 I to adjust pads 21 with respect to the links 32 so as to afford a cushioning effect between the links 2| and 22 when the press is being closed, and to adjust the relative position of the said links at the closed position of the press, that is, to permit the said links to be thrown past deadcenter to lock the press closed,or not to pass dead-center to prevent locking of the press in its closed position. g
If desired, the links'22 may be extended beyond the links I4 as by providing extensions 28 having therein slots 29 ,to receive bolts 33 which extend thru a weight 3| and thru the slots 29 to adjustably secure the weight 3| on the extenson 28. In the embodiment of the invention being described, the weight will descend during closing '20 movement of the press as may be readilyseen by comparing the positions/of Figs. 1 and 2. This descending movement of the weight assists in the closingof the press and lessens the amount of I force required on the operating lever to close the press, and also when the press is opened the ascending movement of the weight 3| retards the opening movement to an extent which prevents an abrupt shock. I
A third toggle is composed of the links 32 and 33 pivotally connected at 34. The link 32 is fulcrumed at 35 on thebase of the frame and the link' 33 isv connected to the shaft 23 which connects links 2I-22 of the second toggle;
A bell-crank lever 36 isfulcrumed on a shaft 31 between the brackets or wings 19 adjacent the front of the frame, and has its long arm'.38 pivpotally connected at 39 to an adjustable link 43 also connected to the shaft or pin 34, which connects links 32 and as. The ShOIt arm 4| of the bell-crank 36 is pivotally connected at 42 to a link 43, which is pivotally connected at 44 to the short curved end or arm 45 of a hand operated lever, which is pivoted at 46 between the brack- 45 ets IS. The relatively long straight arm 4'! of the hand lever extends thru an opening 48 in the front of theframe, and is provided with a handle 49 on its outer end to be gripped by the operator when moving the lever in opening and closing the 50 press. It will be noted that the hand lever is mounted adjacent the work table T convenient to the hand of the operator. It will also be noted that the arm 41 ofthe hand lever is relatively long, while the arm 46 is relatively short, so that 56 causes the arm 45 to move the link 43 down,
by a minimum effort the lever is moved on its fulcrum 46 toactuate the toggles and other parts of the machine in opening and closing the same.
Referring to Fig. 1, where the press'is shown in open position, it will be noted that the arm 41 and handle 49 of the hand lever are in elevated position, at which time the arm 38 of the bell crank is lowered and the toggles are broken. To close the press, that is, to establish the parts in the position of Fig. 2, it is simply necessary to push down on the arm 410i the hand lever which rocking the bell crank 36 on its pivot 31 and straightening the various toggles. When the weight 30 is provided on extensions 28 the closing of the press-is further facilitated. The amount of movement of the hand lever 41, link 43 and" bell crank 36 is relatively small, while the amount of movement imparted to the toggles 32-33, 2 |,-22, l2l4, and head lever L' is relatively great, so that although a relatively lighteifort is required to establish thepress in closed position, a relatively great pressure is created or obtained when the pressis closed. 1 a
In Fig. 4., I have shown substantially the same construction and arrangement of parts as shown in Figs. 1-3, with the exception of the inclusion of a foot lever also connected-to the link 43 so that either the hand lever or the foot lever,- or
both, maybe operated selectively or collectively to close the press. In Fig. 4 the'reference characters designate the same parts as in-Figs. 1-3, with the following exceptions: Instead-ofprovid ing a separate bell-crank 35, 1 provide a foot lever designated generally by the numeral50 havinga treadle 5| and an upstanding arm 52 connected at 53 to thelinki43, said connec'tion'53 corresponding to the connection 42. of Figs. l-,-3.
The footlever has preferably formed as apart thereof what corresponds to thebell-crank 36,
namely, a short horizontal arm 54 and a .downwardly inclined long arm'55. The'foot pedal 50 is pivoted adjacent the front of the frame-55 corresponding to the pin or shaft 51 of Figs. 1-3.
Obviously, under the 1 construction of Fig. 4 either the hand lever 4lor the foot lever 50 may be depressed to effect closing ofthe fpressfby straightening of the'toggles, or the operator may use both his hand and foot on the hand lever '41 and foot lever 50, respectively, to effect closing of the press, since the link 43 is connected be tween' and to both the hand lever and foot lever,
and thepivot 53 is locatedfon the short arm54 to effect, rocking of the portion 54-55 of the" foot lever on pivot'56, the same as, the link 43' or Fig. 1 effects rocking off the bell-crank 36 on its 'pivot3l.
It'will be noted that in Fig. 4 I have shown the weight 3| omitted. This is an optional arrangement as the weight may be included or omitted underboth forms of the invention, namely, the constructions of Figs; 1-3, and that of Fig. 4.
I claim:
1., In a pressing machine including a frame, a pair of pressing elements, a head lever on said frame carrying one of said elements, a plurality of operatively connected toggles one of which is operatively connected to the head'lever'to movei'it and said one element relative to the other, 'a-bell crank pivotally mountedon the frame and having one arm operatively connected to another of said toggles, a hand lever-pivotally mounted on the frame adjacent the upperfront portion thereof, said hand leverhaving a relatively long arm "extending outwardly thru the front of the frame convenient to the hand of the operator, and a link connecting the other arms of the hand lever and bell-crank.
