Be it known that l, NICHOLAS Ones, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in )Ironing Devices, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to ironing devices and Imore particularly to means for applying pressure to a sad iron.
The obj ect of this improvement is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be simple in construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an arm pivoted to a table and adapted to swing only in a horizontal plane, and a lever is pivoted to the free end of said arm. rlhe horizontal swinging arm is composed of members 3 and 4 joined together by the pivotal connection 5. The portion 3 is pivotally mounted on a pin 6 and said pin is carried by a casting 7 which is secured to a table 8 by means of bolts 9. r1`he table 8 is provided with pieces of sheet metal 10 to strengthen kthe portion of the table to which the casting 7 is attached.
The free end of the portion 4 is provided with a perforation in which is rotatively mounted a ain 11. Said pin 11 is provided with threats on which are mounted nuts 12 and lock nuts 13 adapted to lock the nuts 12 in desired positions. rlfhe pin 11 is adapted to be moved longitudinally in the perforation of member 4 in order to adjust it therein. Pivotally secured to the lower end of pin 11 is a lever 14 pivoted as at 15. A sad iron 16 is provided with an arm 17 secured to its top side and said yarm 17 is pivoted to lever 14 as at 18. At the rear end of the sad iron 16 is secured a member 19 having two laterally projecting fingers 2O and 21. The

j finger 20 is adapted to limit upward swinging of the rear portion of sad iron 16 and finger 21 is adapted to limit downward swinging of the rear endk of said sad iron 16 as will be readily understood. A spring j catch 22is secured to thelever 14 and adapted to engage the top of pin 11 to lock the lever 14 and sad iron 16 in inoperative po-sitions, such as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
ln operation, the device is mounted on a table as indicated. The pivot-ally jointed and connected arm composed of members 3 and 4 permits said sad iron 16 to be moved over all portions of the table 8. A garment or other material which it is desired to iron is placed in position on table 8 and the iron 16 placed thereon by means of lever 14 and operated in the usual manner by manipulating lever 14. The end of lever 14 provided with the handle 23 is preferably longer than the end of said lever between pivotal points 15 and 13 so that great pressure may be applied to the sad iro-n 16 by the operator. rlhe pin 11 is made adjustable in its perforation in member 4 to permit of adjusting said pin to effect greater or less pressure on iron 16 as desired. The fingers 20 and 21 are provided so that the operator may direct greater' pressure at the rear or front portion of the iron when desired. Said fingers also hold the iron in position when lifted from its full line to its dotted line position indicated in Fig. 2. The catch 22 serves as a lock for locking the sad iron 16 in inoperative position when it is desired to change material to be ironed or for any other purpose. The arm composed of members 3 and 4 and their connection with the table 8 is made of sufficient strength to prevent upward movement of pin 11 in order to permit the operator to apply great pressure to the iron 16 by pressing downwardly on the handle 23.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to .the precise details of construct-ion set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described, an arm pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane; a lever pivoted to the free end of said arm; a sad iron pivotally connected With said lever; and means on said sad iron engaging said lever and adapted to limit the pivotal movement of said sad iron, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, an arm pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane; a lever pivoted to the free end of said arm and having a perforation therethrough; a
A sad iron pivotally connected with said lever;
a member carried by said sad iron and eX- tended through said perforation; a stop on 15 said member under said lever; and a stop on said member above said lever, substantially as described.
